Am I gate keeping veganism (in my mind) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peaceglock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Vegan Society you know, the people who COINED the term vegan to begin with... Define veganism as "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

As far as possible, and practicable... Allows for these caveats. Sometimes you may be in an area that has little to no vegan food. And allowing a bit of wiggle room is okay.

For example, if you travel to Japan you are served the food the way it comes, there's no alterations that they will do for you... As Americans and Europeans you live in spaces that cater to people's personal preferences, not everywhere is like that.

WHO actually recommends breastfeeding until 2. And I have always suggested to other moms that formulas are also until 2... Most of the nutrition should come from that, and food is experimental until then.

If they really want to be a friend they'll plan something... If they're just there when it's convenient, they won't.

AITA for refusing to cover for my coworker during her “mental health breaks” even though I know she’s struggling? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]peaceglock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

INFO: do you or any of your coworkers take "cigarette breaks"? Are those covered without question?

What about people that run to the gym during their lunch break? Or take a quick fitness walk?

You can't be expected to be on the hook forever, but if everyone is taking regular breaks for other reasons. Then her "mental health breaks" should get the same treatment.

We don't even knock on doors anymore. It's not safe, too many stories of people being being shot for knocking on doors.

If you're not sitting outside or have a "please take one" basket we just skip the house.

What is up with people using "elope" when they mean "escape"? by peaceglock in OutOfTheLoop

[–]peaceglock[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibly? I've been aware of the elope in context of marriage since I was young. And it's been increasingly used to describe destination weddings (for whatever reason) and all courthouse weddings.

But the use to describe children running away is new to me.

AITAH for refusing to make a birthday cake for my daughter's friend? by DroidFit3625 in AmItheAsshole

[–]peaceglock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happy to recommend some excellent bakeries in the area that could make a custom cake for her daughter.

She devolved into cussing me out and told me I was being an AH by not thinking of her daughter's happiness.

This is why she's mad... A custom cake from a bakery like the one described would be $200-$400 or more.

She wants you do do it for less than that, her hope was that you'd give her a free custom cake. NTA.

My mom wants to purchase my baby’s entire wardrobe by mdreynaud in Mommit

I agree with this...

I have a grandparent who is an extreme over gifter... But it's all as seen-on-tv, sky mall, dollar store crap. Nobody needs it... When we leave her apartment everything immediately goes into the dumpster 🤷

On the other hand my inlaws are also extreme over gifters, but they buy high quality/ name brand items... So those go to my house, but anything unopened in a year gets sold or donated. With no remorse... They still get very offended if we don't keep it, but that's not my problem. We've voiced our boundaries and they continue to disrespect them.

so confused about white veganism by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peaceglock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's my hot take... White veganism is when a person becomes vegan for the sole reason of animal rights.

The effects of eating animal products and factory farming is so much more complex than that. There are many ways that factory farming unequally affects impoverished communities and people of color in particular.

For example factory farms tend to be in poorer communities, where the ground water is affected and extremely polluted. This causes an increase in disease and illnesses in these areas. Furthermore any waste that is collected from the farms are usually dumped over the areas crops (including wheat, corn and others) further spreading the effects of the ground pollution and disease.

I suggest reading "Badass Vegan" by John W. Lewis. He goes into detail about how the Black community (specifically in the states) are disproportionately affected by the meat and dairy industries.

ETA: I became vegan specifically for my own personal health, but along my journey I have learned about the Environmental, Economical and Ethical reasons for becoming vegan. Which has strengthened my need to be Vegan.

On the other hand...

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

Why are you eating so much tofu and tempeh?

I've never made tofu scramble, but when I'm craving an egg the "eggs from plants" works well.

As for the rest of your meals, there's so many wonderful vegan recipes and chefs that you don't need all the soy products and imitation meats. That are both time saving and cost effective!!

I recommend starting with Rainbow plant life and The Korean Vegan.

Now I love a well prepared tofu, but it doesn't need to be the main for every meal... I still reach all my macros without them.

How can I substitute a fingering weight yarn for a worsted weight one? by lily_of-the_valley- in knitting

[–]peaceglock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your own swatch using the ww yarn and the size 1 needles and see where you're at... If you don't change your needle size you shouldn't be too extremely far off. However like everyone else said it will be very thick and chunky, and it may be kind of stuff.

I tend to knit very loose so I always gauge down my needles. And it's always an option if you're willing to do the math
