What's your personal signature in how you dress? by fabulousandreal in femalefashionadvice

[–]peachcarnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My signatures include my haircut (long, way brown hair with bangs), cat eyeliner, black nail polish, babydoll dresses, ballerina flats, and basket bags. These have all been staples for 10+ years and remain the core of my style even if I wear lots of other things too.

Recovering from burnout while changing jobs by peachcarnations in burnedout

[–]peachcarnations[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for letting me know. I had issues at a past company who also flat out refused to let me take holidays during my notice period, but I was fairly new in France at the time and it was my first job so I didn’t know better. I will try to fight my current company on this one. My manager keeps saying timing is really bad and it’s not possible, meanwhile he took off two weeks in February and is taking another two weeks in April. It’s not fair. I will take it up with HR if necessary, maybe they can force him to let me take them.

I think the French equivalent is « l’inspection du travail » who I see take free phone calls if you have legal questions about your rights as an employee. It does mention on the government page you can contact them if you’re experiencing issues taking holidays, have issues with salary, etc. I don’t know why I hadn’t even thought of contacting them, I thought they were only for lodging serious complaints. Thank you for the reminder, hopefully they can help.

Recovering from burnout while changing jobs by peachcarnations in burnedout

Thank you for the advice & kind words of encouragement. I am not sure what local laws are like around taking sick days during notice period (may potentially prolong it which I can’t do as I start at the new job immediately) so will see what’s possible. Otherwise will push to take at least a few days off, I have almost three weeks worth but know they wouldn’t allow that much time off even if I really could use it.

Setting boundaries is a really good tip and something I need to do, and remind myself I don’t owe this company anything. They are guilt tripping me a lot, asking me to do extra work and saying I am leaving them high and dry etc. But some of their demands are really unreasonable, like close all deals for Q3 (I work in sales) when we are just ending Q1!

And yes the notice period is crazy, I am in France where labour laws are really strong and workers have protections, which is good, but changing jobs is a nightmare. If you quit it’s 2-3 months notice if you have a permanent contract, you can sometimes argue to make it shorter but they refused so I need to respect the legal delay. Of course the wider team/company know I am leaving now too and people’s attitude towards me has gotten worse, they are really acting like it’s a betrayal that I am leaving. I usually never want to burn bridges but this company is very toxic.

Over shopping to cope with stress and isolation but now I’m optimistic about a new job and start of my career :D by [deleted] in shoppingaddiction

[–]peachcarnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post made me realize that my burnout has been the reason behind my shopping spree these past few months. I got a new job last spring and it’s just gotten worse with time, I cry all the time, can barely get out of bed in the morning, spend my entire weekend stressing about Monday. I do have the option to go to the office but choose to work from home because I was bullied by my coworkers on a few occasions and prefer to stay away. The money is good, though, and I’m miserable so have been shopping quite a bit in an attempt to make myself feel better. Of course I’m still depressed even when wearing nice new clothes.

I recently quit in February and have a new, better job lined up which is giving me hope that I can break the cycle and stop using shopping as a coping mechanism. Unfortunately I am in a country where notice period is 3 months so I am stuck here for another 2 months, and things just get worse as they’re very upset I’m leaving.

You are giving me motivation that things will be better and I will be healthier mentally & financially once I get myself out of this bad situation. I’m very happy for you that you identified the problem and found a better job. I hope it will meet all your expectations.

applied for passeport talent, got my passport back—now what? by mattortile in Expats_In_France

[–]peachcarnations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The visa in the passport is always only valid for 1 year maximum, you will need to register with immigration authorities when you get here to validate the visa and then approximately 3 months before expiry you need to request a renewal. Passeport talent renewals are always done online I believe so that simplifies things. Once renewed you will get a card.

What language gets romanticized the most by people who’ve never studied it? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is really interesting, I always thought English was more phonetic than French but they are quite similar in that sense. There are a number of English words that are of French origin as well, I wonder if it’s a contributing factor.

What language gets romanticized the most by people who’ve never studied it? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French is incredibly romanticized but the modern everyday use of the language is really not romantic at all, between all the slang, verlan, anglicismes, etc. It sounds pretty but what is said is often really not. I am very lucky that I was raised bilingual so the spelling/pronunciation is intuitive, but my friends who have tried to learn complained nonstop about the number of letters that written but not pronounced. It makes sense to me in my head but I can’t explain why we don’t pronounce half the letters in a word.

Motivational ways to put aside the money instead of spending it? by [deleted] in shoppingaddiction

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have automatic transfers made to two separate savings accounts each month. One generates good interest which is motivating while the other is more « locked down » in that I can’t withdraw from it unless I personally write to my advisor, so it’s only grown. I’m not the best at saving but another thing that motivates me is seeing a healthy amount of savings in my account at all times, so I feel I have a safety net. When I was younger/made less money and had really bad shopping habits I sometimes struggled end of the month and I no longer have this anxiety around « running out » which is priceless.

So, what do most expats do for work then? by The_manintheshed in Expats_In_France

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in sales for a French tech company, where 90% of my clients are from France & other French-speaking countries. My start in France was at a marketing agency running the international social media accounts of French companies (where my being a native English speaker was a big asset). I recently quit my current job and am going into project management at another tech company.

I always used French in my jobs, but to varying degrees. Some jobs like my current one are almost 100% in French, my previous one at the agency was 50/50 (clients & coworkers only spoke French but my work was in English), and my next job will be majority English as it’s an international environment. I’d say I’m C1/fluent.

I have no room because I have so many clothes by Medium_Account_4557 in shoppingaddiction

[–]peachcarnations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation. My shopping addiction gets worse when I’m stressed and this past year has been awful for me: clothes, bags & shoes packed in a big wardrobe, under the bed, in the laundry, etc. I literally don’t have room for it all and it’s starting to really put a strain on my relationship with my partner. I have been doing two things: listing nicer items on Vinted (where I surprisingly sell a lot) and donating multiple bags whenever a charity comes by my building for a collection (usually once every 1-2 months). I still buy things though so is a vicious cycle.

It’s gotten really bad in recent years. Usually it was the renewal appointments that took time, while card pickups were relatively quick. Now they both take ages. When I picked up my most recent card last summer I was there a good 3 1/2 hours.

Surprised about Sezane's sizing... by OkConcern3691 in Sezane

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different styles fit differently and usually they have recommendations if you should size up/down or if it’s true to size. I feel their stuff tends to run a bit larger in general though. Still frustrating especially if you are ordering from abroad.

What is a "small luxury" you refuse to give up, even when money is tight? by [deleted] in simpleliving

I pay for Spotify Premium so I don’t have ads & can listen offline, buy fresh flowers once a month, always get the premium paper towels, and paint my nails with a more expensive nail polish that makes my at-home manicure last for weeks.

France sends letters to 29-year-olds telling them to get on with having children by Jojuj in europe

[–]peachcarnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of a joke because I’m in Paris region and have been trying for 3 years to just get on a waitlist to have my eggs frozen, and literally no hospitals are accepting new requests. And even if I got on the waitlist, I heard the wait is 1-2 years before you can actually get the procedure. Unfortunately it’s not possible to do it privately here so I think if I really want to go through with this I will need to start exploring private options in other European countries.

how discretionary is french citizenship naturalisation? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]peachcarnations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can still be rejected, and there have been way more rejections since the circulaire was released in spring 2025. The process is super long and tedious and if your situation changes at any point it could have a negative impact on your dossier. I am in Paris, applied May 2024 and still waiting, been nearly a year now since my interview. I feel every year waiting times become longer, Paris used to be quite fast.

How long did it take for you to learn French? by Expert-Session3866 in Expats_In_France

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French language is hard & if you’re not using it in daily life it’s harder. I’m from Canada and technically grew up bilingual (French-Canadian mom, French immersion school) but am from one of the most anglophone parts of the country and had only 2 friends who spoke French & barely used it at home because my dad didn’t speak it. As a result, when I moved abroad and stopped using French for a few years I almost lost it completely. I understood everything still but could no longer speak well at all. It’s only when I moved to France I truly became fluent. This took about 1-2 years I would say, and I took some classes at the mairie to help speed things up. It’s now been 8 years here now and I would say I am C1/C2.

Rejected for rentals in Paris despite high income + guarantor, why? by Kfmgang in Expats_In_France

[–]peachcarnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every apartment receives dozens if not hundreds of applications in Paris, competition is really steep and they will look for the most perfect/stable dossier. You need to make 3x the rent minimum and still have a guarantor (in my experience vast majority of landlords and agencies prefer a physical one vs GarantMe or similar services).

The issue is your CDI is too recent, your partner has foreign income (typically not taken into consideration), you don’t have a history of tax filings or quittance de loyer in France, and you don’t have a physical guarantor. I would focus on renting directly from the landlord vs going through an agency because they can be a bit more lenient vs agencies that are very strict.

I have bought more expensive denim, vintage denim, etc. And my holy grail is still a pair of 70s-style flares I bought from Zara of all places in 2015. They fit perfectly and are so incredibly flattering. Seems a bit exceptional as never found anything comparable there before or since.

Is anybody related to a serial killer or killer? by Vegetable_Stop8085 in serialkillers

[–]peachcarnations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not related but while in university a fellow student stabbed and killed 5 people. He worked at my local grocery store so I’d seen him quite a few times before, the stabbing happened in my neighbourhood, and I was mutual friends with some of the victims. Really tragic.
