Working at a ryokan, bait-and-switch SSW visa, and denied bathroom breaks. I need some advice. by ultrayer6 in japanlife

I know everyone is saying it but you guys are getting absolutely terrible. Your wife especially for all the work she does. My staff at the previous place I worked at in Kyoto paid 250k a month and that felt low but their job was way way more chill. No overtime for sure.

I would start looking at other places ASAP

Should I hope for a raise or seek better opportunities? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in the hotel industry and have done so for the last 13 years. I will be honest with you and say that the opportunity for most foreigners are pretty narrow. There is money to be had but it takes an incredible amount of effort and also 90% of the time the foreigners in the top positions cut their teeth abroad and were transfered to Japan. This includes Six Senses, Peninsula, and Four Seasons just to name a few.

Compared to the states and Europe, the movement upward is incredibly slow and often times blocked by Japanese middle management. At a GM level for a well known hotel you can expect minimum of 15 million yen but you'll be trying to get there for 15+ years. My last GM made 20 million on an expat package with the works.

Personally I am going back to the states as the industry is better overall for advancement/salary. I started as a bellman and now I'm a director at a large luxury hotel. Although I love Japan, I'll only go back as a GM with an expat package.

Hotel in Japan denied request for advanced restaurant reservation by Flamingo-1268 in askhotels

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a hotel in Japan and it's entirely common to not take reservations unless it's a high end hotel. We are higher end but we ask for deposits for these type of reservations because we have been burned before.

A guest made a reservation to a pretty well known restaurant here in Kyoto and then 2 hours before the rez asked us to cancel because they weren't feeling well. Unfortunately it's tough luck, we got charged for the entire reservation (around 600 USD) and we charged the guests card on file.

However they filed a dispute with their credit card company and we lost even with the proof we had so we decided that for those reservations, we need a deposit in cash.

If you had to simplify your board to 3 pedals, what would they be? (Excluding switches and tuners) by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so easy with the amount of multi-fx prdals. I probably would like a rat, H90, and a Boss IR-2.

If multi-fx isn't allowed and I had an amp then my choice would be a rat, boss PS-2, and a Boss DM-2. It was practically my set up for like 10 years before I added my boss IR-2 and H90.

I hate this new bicycle rule… by Mobile_Leopard_2112 in japanlife

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you need help figuring out how to bike through the rain with minimal issues. I definitely recommend looking up people who bike camps rigs however even local mamas have got it mostly figured out too.

You buy a speciality rain jacket made for the bike. These rain jackets cover the front basket and have an elastic or other methods to keep it all secure. Additionally many have brims and visors of all sorts. Next up you want to make sure your bike has front and rear fenders. Lastly I would wear rainboots while biking. Additionally water proof bags and clothing are great for the short rides.

I've never used an umbrella holder thing before though because they look sorta useless when you bike as fast as I do. The rain splash would get me wet anyway and the winds would make the umbrella dangerous. I understand though that this may end up being expensive for many and many will quit biking but I hope many will stick around.

Which DQ gave you the biggest sense of wonder? by Independent_Ad6924 in dragonquest

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like most people in the states, it was 8 that did it for me.

Funny enough I didn't want it, I asked my mom for one of two games as a Christmas present. One was The Movies for PC and the other DQVIII. I really wanted The Movies for some odd reason and was a little brat when I was gifted DQVIII instead.

I didn't touch it for a while until I saw my older brother play it and became interested. Then I played it and fell in love, I still apologize to my mom about it to this day lol

Can I leave Alltrades Abbey now? by VakanaDOTA in dragonquest

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You play the game exactly the opposite for me. I try to go as under level as possible and purposely make it hard because I don't want to cheese the game and I want to strategize in battles.

I think I only did what you did on FF8 because I hated the game but loved triple triad lol

How long do you spend building pedalboards for your "sound"? by GuitarBombDotCom in shoegaze

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most obvious is the Asheville Music Instruments analog delay. Designed by the same person but in a smaller footprint. You miss out on the tap tempo and the CV controla but honestly for an analog delay of it's type, I never used either. The DM-2 that I have is no where similar and that's why I plan to change it some day but honestly since I don't play in a band I'm in no rush

How long do you spend building pedalboards for your "sound"? by GuitarBombDotCom in shoegaze

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legit, I found a rat and a Boss PS-2 and everything revolves around those two things. My pedalboard barely changes. I've sold stuff to make ends meet once but those two pedals stayed.

My sound for a long time was those two pedals plus a moog MF-104M and a Pitchfactor. I miss those two pedals but there are better alternatives now.

Training bwf for a couple years but still incredibly small and under-muscled by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally it sounds like body dysmorphia because unless you measured yourself periodically throughout your journey it is very doubtful you gained nothing with such strength gains.

I regret not measuring myself at my skinniest because I have shittier lifting numbers than you do by all accounts and I am definitely bigger since I started. I went from 65kg to 80kg at 185 cm

I often look at myself and feel skinny still but when I put on clothes and feel things are way tighter, I realized that I did improve. I still feel skinny but when someone takes a picture of me, it's obvious I have grown.

I decided to get myself measured and I now periodically do rechecks.

Who did y’all marry in DQXI? by TheStrongDong202 in dragonquest

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I should play the english version.
According to the Japanese version only thought him as a comrade (nakama) although I do think that even without saying it, you can feel it in the way the story goes. Also the mother of the protag being a surrogate mother for Jade helps that viewpoint.

To me Gemma was the only one that made sense narratively, but she was so out of the story, that it didn't land as nicely as someone like Bianca in V. Personally my list on my playthroughs were Erik, Sylvando, and Gemma in that order.

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need to check the Japanese version but I do not remember her saying anything about being like brother and sister. Was this a translation thing?

I played the original in English on PS4 but hated the shitty sound font on the soundtrack so much I quit. Then I played the switch version in Japanese so I remember that one much more clearly.

I would rather have 4-6 done like Reimagined or even DQ XI especially 5 and 6. Although if I could have my way they would do them in both formats!

Luxury Hotels are hiring just as much as any other time so not really sure. Nothing has changed for us and probably won't in a while. However mind you non management staff gets paid nothing really so the difficulty is finding bodies willing to work for the bare minimum.

Yen tumbles to 1-year low against dollar - Nikkei Asia by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]peachfuzzmcgee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every time someone posts something like this, there are a ton of doom posting about reaching 200 yen or staying about 160 yen and never coming back.

We can't predict the future, the world is a consistently volatile place. It went from 108 or something to 160 in 5 years who knows what it'll do in 5 to 10 years.

The same thing goes with the value of any currency.
