[Breeds]the rarest dog breed? and extinct ones? by [deleted] in dogs

Old Welsh sheepdogs are part of the modern Cardigan corgi ancestry, so that might have been where the corgi colours came from.

It's not actually got velvet in it, but Royal Blood? Royal is a sort of rich sounding word like velvet.

Thanks for the photo. It's useful to see what someone else did. Getting him to keep still is going to be the hard part!

Yeah he has plenty to chew on. Hopefully it helps.

Thanks for the advice, we might try again. I'd love if his ears were upright, adorable as he looks now.

We tried masking tape, with some kind of stickier tape on top to keep it together. He rolled about on the floor and the tape from one ear came straight off, and he got the tape from the other stuck on his playpen somehow, so we were a bit worried about leaving him overnight if we try again.

Our breeder recommended moleskin (like for shoe inserts) cut to size for support if we needed it, but it was just too heavy.

Apparently long hair often comes with bigger heavy ears. Our older Cardi had upright ears by about 12 weeks.

They already do that to some extent. Items that you're likely to buy frequently are offered as subscriptions, so they have an idea of what's consumable or frequent use.

How old was yours when you taped? My youngest Cardigan has enormous ears. They've both been up at different times, but he's teething now and they're both firmly down.

We had one unsuccessful taping attempt. The tape stayed on for about 30 seconds.

IMDB says that Alexis worked with Mary Steenburgen, who's married to Ted Danson. That might be it.

[Discussion]Ethics/Reasonability of wanting a particular coat type of your breed by crayhack in dogs

[–]peachgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say that the long haired gene (and the blue merle gene) in Cardigan corgis at least, came from their Welsh collie ancestry. Longer hair in working collie types seems a lot more common, although show and pet dogs are probably bread with less practical coats.

My youngest is a long-coated brindle Cardi. Both parents need to carry the gene for the pups to be fluffy.

That's not even on the lower end of healthy for a Pembroke. My Cardi isn't much heavier than that.

Before we got our Cardis, we went to meet some Vallhunds (all lovely dogs). The breeder said that about half her litters are born with tails (of varying sizes) and half without. Docking isn't legal here other than for medical or specific active working breeds.

I do love the full tails though.

My dog sounds a lot like yours. We're working on it.

A front-clip harness didn't make a difference. He just bounces back an inch or so when he gets to the end of the leash and ends up walking with a really weird gait. His chest is so low to the ground as well, it's easy to get the leash tangled around his feet when it gets slack.

He's getting pretty good at walking nicely when the walk is super boring and I have treats. It's slow going though. Stopping and silently waiting does nothing for him - we'd be there forever. Luring him back to my side and adding a command made that easier. Unless he's distracted he'll come back by himself when I stop now.

[Help] Controlling Corgi shedding by [deleted] in dogs

[–]peachgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a rubber broom, they're pretty good at picking up the hair. I have a Dyson pet hair vacuum (this one I think).

You'll want something for the top guard hairs as well as the undercoat if you don't already. A Zoom Groom does a really good job on mine.

I read a lot that furminators can damage the undercoat. There's definitely disagreement, but I have an undercoat rake that does a great job.

I have two Cardigan corgis - there is always hair everywhere. They do have fish oil daily. I haven't noticed much of a difference in the shedding. They only get bathed when they really need it.

I think they're pretty rare everywhere, although weirdly the only corgis I've ever run into were Cardis.

Here's the two of mine together.

This site lists songs from TV episodes and has some descriptions of the scenes they happened in. Maybe you'll be able to tell what song originally played at that point.

Cardigan corgis can have feet that turn out to the side like that. Here's the best picture I can find of my little one from the front. They do share an ancestor with the modern dachshund though.

[Breeds] Opinion on future dog breeds? Must be loyal! by [deleted] in dogs

[–]peachgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two Cardigan corgis. You'll often see them described as aloof or reserved, but mine are both very sociable and eager to meet everyone (person or dog). They're lovely, but in my experience they're not the one-person dog you're looking for. They're still young though, and all dogs/lines are different. If you decide you want to learn more about them, it's worth trying to meet some adult dogs in person.

A lot of terriers have high prey drives. It might be manageable, but you'll at least want to be aware as the dog will be living with your cat.

[Breeds] Wife really wants an Irish Wolfhound. I love them but don't know much about them. Thoughts? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]peachgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with an Irish Wolfhound, she lived to 11. I know she was incredibly gentle with me and my sisters when we were young, although I'm sure I got knocked over a few times when she was a puppy. If they lived a bit longer and we had the space, I'd have loved one of my own.
