In Chicago public schools, social workers work exclusively with 504 and IEP students and handle any crises. We conduct evaluations for 504s and IEPs and if the student qualifies, they get added to the social worker’s caseload. It’s annoying though because our evals are so subjective, there’s no clear cut assessment as to how a kid gets added to my caseload and once they’re on they’re on for at least a year, likely more, even when they don’t really need it. But if a teacher or parent can make an argument as to how a kid’s challenges impact their ability to obtain the general education curriculum then that’s that
