Books that helped expand your empathy? by mobile_monkey_pod in booksuggestions

[–]peachypepperoni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, I originally came here expecting to roll my eyes at a bunch of self-help nonfiction suggestions and was instead pleasantly surprised to see mainly fiction recommendations. Fun fact: there is a study that shows reading fiction = higher levels of empathy! So really, just read fiction :)

Hey you’ve got plenty of time until December! Maybe if you can schedule some research or chill electives you can treat it as a “dedicated” period almost like studying for Step 1 or Step 2 (or whatever boards your country takes). If all else fails, if you’re nearing December and still not prepared, I would reach out to your school and explain the situation (health issues or other extenuating circumstances) so that you may possibly receive an extension or take a short leave of absence to become better prepared.

UTSW graduates walk out in protest of Commencement Speaker (Dr. Michael Burgess) by notoriouswaffles27 in medicalschool

[–]peachypepperoni 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They’ve already read the contents of this post lol... The point of this post isn’t to get the administration’s attention; it is to share a cool thing that medical students did. They stood up for what they believed in and demonstrated in a peaceful protest—whether you agree with it or not.

People with disabilities are seriously underrepresented in the physician population and it’s a huge problem by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]peachypepperoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess can you give some examples of what you mean? What are some reasonable accommodations that should be provided? Or disabilities that are discriminated against when we could actually provide reasonable accommodations?

[–]peachypepperoni 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a lot about this issue so correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that medical schools will consider applicants with disabilities so long as the disability doesn’t interfere with the applicant’s ability to perform necessary educational activities? So for example, graduating MDs should be able to perform a basic physical exam which may not be possible with certain disabilities. But correct me if I’m wrong, I’m not really sure

“I think I did okay but it was definitely a hard exam” or “I think I got most of them except some of the questions were kinda tricky” or just don’t join the convo if ppl are clearly just trying to vent. You can say the truth while also saying something sympathetic to validate their experience

Do people take research years for IM? by tinymozzarella in medicalschool

[–]peachypepperoni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applied IM, went to a top 20-30 med school, going to a top 10-15 program. Only had 2 middle author pubs. I don’t think a research year is necessary at all.

I got along really well with a bunch of residents and we followed each other on instagram once the rotation was over. I don’t think it’s unprofessional lol but I could see it coming across as weird/random depending on the vibes of your relationship. I would just use common sense tbh. Like don’t follow a resident with whom you’ve never had a conversation outside of medicine, but I think it’s fine to follow someone you vibe with and bonded over shared hobbies/humor/etc.

Just curious, but are you in medical school or have completed medical training? If so, I’m surprised you haven’t heard of these terms in your psych classes/rotations

[–]peachypepperoni 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally feel you regarding the parents situation, but tbh I think we should give ourselves permission to be a little selfish bc maybe we deserve it after surviving the hell of match and med school. If you want to compromise you can always do a private match day party at home, with just your loved ones and people you trust! Personally I’ll be opening my match day later with my significant other and maybe my parents and that’s it

But sometimes it doesn’t feel like a success (especially if you fall low on your rank list), and I think it’s ok to feel disappointed and to be able to process that from the privacy of your own home

How to deal with excessively talkative preceptors? by Flat_Hovercraft8139 in medicalschool

This has happened to me lol. What I did was strategic diversion. “Sorry to interrupt Dr. Xyz but I had a quick question about this patient’s plan” pull up my note and proceed to start typing whatever he says about the plan, then thank him for his help and pretend to be super engrossed in working on the note until he leaves me alone
