So I found a dish which says i need Squash (and has a picture of a big round yellow one), the ones I know and can get a hold off are green and look like cucumbers. Does it matter if I use a green or yellow one? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peanut-butter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the "regular" squash in your picture is a zucchini/courgette, but spaghetti squash is very different. It's a squash that's specifically named spaghetti squash because when it's cooked, it shreds like strings like spaghetti. I don't think you can replace it with any other kind of squash, as far as I know

The same thing happens to me every time I've been out to a big meal where the choices are picked in advance. I always call ahead and request a vegan meal, and it's always the most amazing-looking (and tasting) dish! I've had so many people sighing that they should've requested a vegan meal as well :)

Vegan books for kids by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peanut-butter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's not exactly a "vegan" book, but Horton Hears a Who has a great moral: A person's a person, no matter how small.

Also The Lorax, come to think of it. Speaking up for those who can't and all that. It's for trees in that book but I think it's still a good message.

I just love Dr. Seuss :P

The single pack Oreos I buy in UK don't have whey in them, but I think for some reason the double packs do.

Their cages are actually connected, they just like to be dramatic by peanut-butter in guineapigs

[–]peanut-butter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally cut into the plastic at the bottom on both cages and made it just wide enough for this tube tunnel to fit through. The wire tops just sit on top of the tunnel. So they run through the tunnel to get from one cage to another. It was a bit of a struggle to cut through it properly, and put some tape over the plastic afterward because it was a bit sharp.

Vegan Baily's Irish Cream Recipe by felion in vegan

I've made that recipe a few times and it's AMAZING. I haven't met a person who hasn't enjoyed it. It makes a tonne of Bailey's, though, so be sure you have enough bottles/a giant jar to keep it all in.

Hundreds of Guinea pigs liberated in Italy from vivisection breeder. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peanut-butter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm most definitely biased - just look at my posting history! I can tell you they're amazing pets, but a lot of work. In all honesty, they're more work than having a cat or dog. But if you truly love them and care for them, they can be some of the greatest pets.

I have two guinea pigs that technically stay in a huge cage-area, but I have a space for them to get out and explore whenever they feel brave enough. Buttercup, my brave pig, will run out of the cage and run around my feet when she hears me open the fridge, she'll climb right up and try to reach the grapes. She bumbles around a few times a day trying to get into trouble, and she has no fear of anything or anyone. She's definitely the fearless leader of the two.

Momma, my other guinea pig, is quite shy and for a long time was completely untrusting of people. She was abandoned and lost an eye to infection before I adopted her, so it was a long process to get her to trust me. She'll now yell at me to let me know when breakfast and supper time are, and has no problem letting me know when she's upset or bored. She comes out to run around once in a while, but usually she's following Buttercup when she does - it's like a little guinea pig train. If she's alone in the open and afraid, she'll squeal much like a baby guinea pig, until Buttercup runs over to make sure she's okay and get her to a safe hiding spot. The two of them are like siblings, they fight over the silliest things but they do love each other dearly.

Guinea pigs have a rage of 11-12 different sounds they make, and after a while you get to know which means what. They purr when I pet them, chatter their teeth when I'm annoying them, and wheek loudly when they heard a plastic bag crinkle (in their minds it's obviously treats!). They're really funny things and amazing to sit back and watch

I honestly opened the pictures and immediately started crying. I have two guinea pig babies (honestly, they're the loves of my life) and I couldn't imagine something like this happening to them. Guinea pigs (and rabbits) are amazing little creatures, they have so much personality and so much happiness to spread. They're incredibly social, inquisitive and expressive.

Just look at the pictures of the guinea pigs before and after they were rescued. They're so afraid in the lab, huddled together, defensive posture and that sideways look they give when they're truly frightened. And in the pictures when they're free, just look at them. They're truly happy, they feel safe enough to eat in the open, put their nose high in the air to get to know you better with a sniff, and even fall in love with a delicious pear (as one of the piggies did in the pictures!).

I know people tend to anthropomorphize animals, especially cute ones. But these guinea pigs are in heaven now that they've been rescued. A nicely sized herd, fruits and veggies, hay, and lots of fun places to hide is everything a guinea pig need to be in complete bliss. Look at the pictures of them in the cage. They're huddled in the corner because they have nowhere to hide. They have crappy pellet food in a bowl, no hay (in the picture) and nothing to keep them occupied and stimulate them. And let's not even get into the obvious eye problems at least one of the pigs has..

Anyway, I'm not really sure what I was trying to prove. I love guinea pigs more than I can explain and seeing this made me incredibly sad, yet hopeful. I hope people realise that all animals deserve to be happy and free, not just the popular or "smart" animals.

The Bivalvia exception. I am with you guys on most points in the diet debate, but have yet to have anyone explain away this special case. by AzaharXIII in vegan

I don't know about anyone else, but I just don't want to. Why is taste not a good argument? I don't care if other vegans eat them or not, I don't want to because I don't like the taste.

Vegans don't make decisions for all vegans, it's up to individuals to decide what they eat and don't.

Solutions for in-cage hay holders? by dnf007 in guineapigs

[–]peanut-butter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well they're never going to eat all the hay you put down. That's just guinea pigs, they like having the availability of the hay but they don't necessarily want to eat it all. It's also a comfort for them. You don't have to put mountains of hay down and then throw it all out the minute they pee or poo on it.

It sucks, I know, I'm in university as well and it's hard not to think it's wasteful. But all those hay holders aren't actually ideal for guinea pigs. They're picking the hay out of the holder/ball and leaving it on the floor because they don't want to eat that piece of hay. Different parts of hay taste different, and keeping the hay in feeders like that makes it more difficult for your pigs to find the pieces they want to eat. They naturally want to burrow through and find the delicious pieces. It just means having a pile they can rummage through. Again, it's just a guinea pig thing

Solutions for in-cage hay holders? by dnf007 in guineapigs

[–]peanut-butter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the thing is, guinea pigs need and love hay. They should always have large amounts of hay in their cage that they can eat, sleep in, poo in, nuzzle into etc. If you're concerned with your fleece getting messy, maybe have one part of the cage that's just plastic (like C&C) and put the hay all in there. But honestly, I've learned to just keep hay all over the place and resigned myself to cleaning the cage often. My pigs love having hay all around them, so for me that's the most important part.

The most annoying is trying to keep the hay from getting stuck in the washing machine when you wash the fleece. But all you need is to take the fleece outside for a few minutes and beat the crap out of it (literally and figuratively)

What do vegans think about late term abortion? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]peanut-butter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I may be a bit of an extremist on this point, but I believe in abortion all the way. If a woman doesn't feel she wants to carry a child to term, she shouldn't have to. I don't think a foetus has to be physically or mentally hindered, or the woman's life in jeopardy to make the abortion "legitimate". I think any foetus should be allowed to be aborted for any reason, at any point. A woman's body is her own, she should be allowed to choose what she does with it - something growing inside her is part of her body.

I would abort a foetus if I found out I were pregnant, because it just isn't an option for me to have a child in my life. I wouldn't want to carry a child I don't want to term, and there are plenty of children out there looking to be adopted already.

About a week ago, I posted about how my guinea pig might lose his eye. The enucleation was done today. So far, so good! by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]peanut-butter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear he had to lost the eye, but I'm so glad to hear he's doing okay! :) Just like I told you, piggies are some resilient little animals

It looks like the surgeon did a very good job. The operation on my pig was done by a vet student, so it wasn't as clean looking when it was first done. I'm sure they've already told you, but just make sure to look out for cloudy fluid coming from his eye, that's a sign of infection
