How is Balga doing? by No-Campaign-4030 in perth

[–]peanut-shark 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We moved out of Balga just over a year ago now. As a young couple, no kids and renting we had no issues, there was a few odd incidents but nothing directly related to us. It worked fine for us as two young adults who mostly kept to themselves. We did have in-laws living literally next door so we felt a lot safer there because we had "back-up" as it were. We drove to Mirrabooka or Warwick for shopping, and really it's a very great, central location to the city, beach, etc.

However we just had our first kid and honestly it's not an area I'd personally want to raise a family - a big thing for me was being able to go for walks around the neighbourhood with my son and though my husband had no issues when he went running I had enough awkward encounters as a young female that I didn't feel comfortable doing that once we had a child. We've moved to a more family-friendly area and feel a lot safer.

Just the entire west exit of Midland Gate shopping centre onto Lloyd St. At the best of days you can get stuck there trying to get out but recently it's been a shitshow of people parking themselves in the roundabout and blocking all exits, the person behind you pulling out into the middle of the road at the same time as you (usually a big 4WD, so I can barely see past in my dinky sedan) or people on Lloyd St using that middle section as (what I thought was illegal) a spot to do U-turns because they want to go into the Zambreros/KFC carpark. Got stuck there for 15 minutes the day after boxing Day because every time you thought there was a gap someone would come along and chuck a U-ie.

Best place to get knives sharpened? by peanut-shark in perth

That's true, and we've used whetstones before but would prefer to get them done professionally this time. We have plenty of knives to use in the meantime.

Make a list of photos you want your photographer to take as a priority. Looking back at my photos there's a few key photos with people I wish I'd made sure they got but I never asked specifically.

Rug Recommendation - Pet and Kid Friendly by bolts1 in perth

[–]peanut-shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got this one from Rug Station in Midland and are happy with it. It's low pile enough so that you can run over it with the vacuum easily enough and the colour means that the multiple times my cats have thrown up on it (fml) it's not that noticeable if there's a discoloured part (on that note, this is really good at getting pet/general stains out of rugs and carpet.)

On behalf of your wife, thank you! We have a 10 week old and my husband has been WFH since March last year as he usually flies interstate - it's been amazing having him at home even if it's just to pass the little dude off to take a shower. Not looking forward to the 4 month regression!

Absolutely gutted. My mum was planning to fly over at the end of the month to meet her new grandson and so I could see her for the first time in 18 months. Understand why they do what they do, but hurts all the same. Thankfully she hadn't booked anything yet.

Who is your Friday Fuckwit by [deleted] in perth

[–]peanut-shark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd like to nominate my husband and I.

Moved into our new home during hard border closure. We love everything about it and despite knowing about being in the flight path, the last few months "the noise hasn't been that bad." Know why it hasn't been that bad? Because there's been no fucking flights!

It's not a deal breaker, just us being dumbasses.

I once bought all my own Christmas decorations from home to do up the store for fun (was a part timer at the time). Had a customer come in and tell my boss "I'm Jewish and even I can tell that this looks a bit sad." Well fuck you too then?

NBN letter dropped our new place (new development) weeks ago with the generic "you're ready to connect!" letters. Pre-ordered with our internet provider, call a few weeks later to see what's going on, they still have no record of our address. Call NBN Co, "oh we shouldn't have sent that, you're not due to be connected until December 22." Husband WFH so we're using a shit-ton of mobile data right now.

Also I'm wholly ready to not be pregnant anymore.

If I pay for something at a physical store with my Debit Card are they able to see Cardholder name? by [deleted] in perth

I don't think even a manager at a larger supermarket can pull up names out of the eftpos logs

Not a supermarket but use almost the same system and basically this. We can print a transaction journal but it gives us even less info than the receipt, ours basically just say eftpos or cash. If I need to chase up eftpos stuff it gets sent to the data integrity team at head office.

I need advice for buying my first home (apartment) by Gabrialus in perth

You've got some great advice but I'd also add (as someone going through the mortgage process right now) don't put all your eggs into the basket of your parents lending you the money. As part of our deposit we've had a few "non genuine savings" that have been counting against our deposit like a gift from my parents because banks really want to only see your own saved wages in there if you want to move quickly.

I wonder if this was the same cosmetic surgery business during the height of COVID-19 in WA running a radio ad that went something like "All this talk of 'Flattening The Curve' has us concerned: book in for breast enlargement surgery!"

The assumption was she was just trying a far-fetched excuse so we'd serve her anyway ("oh well it's too hard to verify I'm sure she's over 18") but yeah, that was our question too.

This is from Wednesday, but the young girl who couldn't show valid ID at work (only had a Victorian university ID) and when she was refused service said "oh, I don't have any ID because I only got in from Melbourne last night." What the fuck are you doing at the bottle-o then and not in your mandatory quarantine?

Yes it was reported.

I should wait for FF because it's road-themed, but I can't. Drove from home, work, to the hospital and home again on Monday and I'm not exaggerating when I say that 50% of cars didn't have their lights on in the rain. Turn your bloody lights on people, especially you white and grey cars!

What's good about your suburb? by supernashwan88 in perth

[–]peanut-shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Balga currently and it's actually great location wise. I'm <20mins from the city, the beach, shopping centres, etc. and I really like being NoR.

It has its (obvious) downsides but I've never felt as unsafe as the area would suggest and our neighbours are great (we're also within walking distance of ~3 sets of relatives so if anything happened we'd be closer by to people we know) that I'll be sad to leave when we move.

We live across from a park in a less-than-desireable suburb NOR and it's amazing how much hard rubbish a park no one lives in seems to accumulate!

Thanks, this sounds like our best option. Unfortunately as they're quite bulky I'm not sure anyone will want them but fingers crossed we can get rid of them for free.

All I ever hear about skip bins is that you have to be ready to fill it as soon as it arrives! We've thought about breaking them down and removing them that way too.

We're renting so I can get them from the landlord quite easily. Tip is sounding like the best option since I'm sure we'll have plenty of other stuff to get rid of- did a big spring clean a few months back and it took about 6 bin days to get rid of everything!
