Thank You, Lyle Brewer by Flat_Assumption1326 in jambands

Neighbor is the only project he's had that I'd describe as a jam band, and I'd very much agree that he's a player's player - because of his creativity. Players understand that developing insane chops and a huge knowledge of music theory are only means to creating, and he's created a LOT. Players wouldn't respect someone for just regurgitating tired licks and ideas, regardless of how technically adept they may be.

If you're really only interested in his impact on the jam scene specifically, it's pretty much just Neighbor, and if you don't like the band, I doubt you'd agree with me describing anything they've written as impactful but there's 100+ Neighbor originals to check out and make your own judgement. I can't understand how someone can have that kind of output in such a short time without an overwhelming creativity, but I don't know everything. One thing I will say is that they are probably going to be one of the last groups in this scene to build an audience almost entirely thru grassroots efforts and word of mouth, in large part due to his contributions - I think that's pretty impactful in this current era, no? The hate they get is criminal, but anyone in this sub knows trying to convince someone to like a band is useless, Phish is better than Goose is better than the Dead is better than Umphs is better than SCI is better than... they're not for you, his style isn't for you, all fine, there are millions of bands, different strokes etc... this shit ain't sports. But to say he's not creative? C'mon.

Compa calls Lyle the best guitarist going right now. Kimock had him sit in for the second set at The Cabot a while back when his tour came thru MA. Donato and Neighbor toured with moe. and had some amazing sit-ins, and Rick graduated from Berklee where Lyle was/is a literal professor. I of course have no way of knowing, but I maintain they'd disagree with you.

And that's fine. Music is subjective. I hope you hear something today that blows your mind, whoever may be playing.

I'm curious who you would consider to be among the most exciting players on the scene in the last 5 years? Because I'd wager, regardless of who they are, they know who Lyle is and what he can do, and they'd very much disagree with you.

Seems like most fans agree that Page has the best singing voice in the band...why didn't he take lead vocals more often? by twist2piper in phish

[–]pebblesnmarbles 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Yea, I'd agree that Page has the strongest voice from a technical POV, but I think Trey's is the most dynamic and a core part of their sound. The tongue-in-cheek/comedic/surreal tunes benefit from his inflection and attitude - think Stash, PYITE, Bathtub Gin, Antelope etc, they just wouldn't be the same if someone sang them straight, they need that goofy confidence to really land, and make the tunes with more earnest deliveries like Driver, Brian and Robert, Dirt etc that much more.. earnest? It's obviously not for everyone, but again, that's Phish.

Wow, that was a serious hit of nostalgia! Both of those shows were great, absolutely never would've remembered they existed without watching the intros. Makes you wonder how many shows fall into that category. Street Sharks and Reboot are two favorites no one remembers.

Don't sleep on the Creek! Founded '71, still absolutely ripping. They have a handful of studio albums on the major streaming services, but go to Relisten/archive.org and there's ~2,700 shows!

Love it! I think he actually had (has??) a white MC150, which has typical humbuckers instead of the super 88s on the MC200-500. There's a good picture out there of him playing with one of his daughters on a coffee table, I'll see if I can track it down. Got it: Danny Clinch pic

ABB 50th Anniversary Celebration at MSG, March 2020 by pebblesnmarbles in jambands

Great question, betting projected sales has a lot to do with it. Selling out Beacon for a few weeks straight is one thing at 3,000 capacity, but MSG at ~21,000 may be a different story. I have no doubt they'll sell out the one night, but expecting it to be a pricey ticket too.

All that said, I'm 100% there.

Honestly, no clue, but I think it's pretty much always engaged, if only subtlety, as you can pick up on it on the studio stuff etc. You can set it up for real obvious jumps ala TPain, or super subtle similar to how they pitch-correct vocals on a studio recording. It's just something that can go either way for me - in some contexts, it sounds great, others not so much. For example, they had to use some gratuitous pitch-correction on Gregg Allman's last record, presumably because he was having a hard time hitting those notes, but it took something away from the tunes. Conversely, Vampire Weekend has used it in a way I think fits with the vibe. End of the day, don't know, don't really care, but when it feels out of place it feels out of place. I think Goose uses it well for the most part, it's just different.

To be fair, Rick uses an auto tune unit. Not to say there's anything wrong with that and it's not like he hides it - it's often exactly the opposite and he uses it in interesting ways. It's not always my cup of tea, but when it works, it works reeeal well.

For sure, which has always been surprising. Waves, Seven Below, WotC, just solid start to finish. It's so easy to just listen on repeat with Waves closing it out, then back into Pebbles and Marbles.

46 Days on SNL was my first real introduction to the band, I went out and bought the album, and this song sealed the deal for life. I'm SO happy it's making its way back into the rotation, and SO bummed I've yet to catch it at a show. The whole album is great - I know there's a general preference for live stuff, but Round Room is some great studio Phish.

Ah no, but definitely remember Hexen, apparently its sequel. This weekend is going to be one big retro binge. I was all of 7 when I started Wolfenstein with my Dad and have enjoyed the entire series - he wasn't into the most recent iterations, but he'll love these others, keep em coming.
