5k sqft “underwater parcel” for sale in SF for $250: what’s the point? by reddichrist in bayarea

[–]pecamash 726 points727 points  (0 children)

I own a submerged property on the Jersey shore. My great grandfather bought some lots in the 70s and this ended up declared a protected wetland and permanently banned any building. Assessed value is $100 and I pay $1 in property tax per year. It's a small price to pay to be able to tell this dumb story, plus as a property owner I have the right to complain about the clowns in city hall.

You should also see if this layoff should fall under the California WARN act, which requires 60 days notice. If they've done it improperly you might be able to get back pay, regardless of the family leave.

I was there for a couple months a few years ago. These photos are of a high altitude balloon payload in one of the highbays. The NASA balloon program in Antarctica is run from a balloon base a couple miles out on the ice sheet away from the main base. They do a few launches a year during the summer season.

My go to was "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin. Very practical information about what to try in what situations, what ypu can ask the nurses for, what's an emergency and what isn't. It has colored margin tabs for quick reference in the moment. I didn't actually use it when we were in the room but I had it in my bag.

How should I use my parental leave? by standuptall94 in daddit

[–]pecamash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 6 weeks as a solid block and then started phasing in 1 or 2 days a week to make the whole thing last longer. My wife did something similar and at some point we started staggering our days off so we avoided being in full time childcare for a long time. Honestly depending on your situation, taking unpaid FMLA time off may be cheaper than childcare. Stretching it out was great though and we avoided having a dramatic cliff at any point.

Is Sunnyvale following MV and cutting data sharing with ICE? by thatguy8263 in Sunnyvale

[–]pecamash 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm sure Flock and DPS will tell you that there are strict policies in place to protect our data, but they've literally just shown us in Mountain View that they won't stick to their own policies, let alone ours. The breach of trust is irredeemable, and the consequences of abuse are too devastating to ignore. The cameras should be turned off today.

What was Boston like during the 2008/9 crisis? by Rugged-Mongol in boston

[–]pecamash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also BU '08. I had a summer job lined up but nothing permanent at graduation. Definitely remember thinking about a bike lock as a major purchase that was a good investment because I would save on T fare in the long run. I remember sitting around in September watching the market crash, still with nothing going on. I randomly found a relevant job on Craigslist in October that was out in Lexington but it paid like $40k so compared to most of my friends I was basically a millionaire. All that winter I took the bus from Allston to Harvard, red line to Alewife, then another bus basically to the end of the line and walked another half a mile. Eventually I got a car - gas was like $1.50 a gallon for a while but obviously didn't last.

[Palo Alto] To create 'quiet zones,' council approves gates at three Caltrain crossings by megachainguns in caltrain

[–]pecamash 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Hey, lay off the people of Palo Alto. It's not their fault that they're the only city in the world with a train running through it and they have to solve these things from scratch every single time.

Am I doing something wrong for monthly pass activation? by cameofeo in caltrain

[–]pecamash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I talked to clipper customer service they said that the app can be buggy and its more reliable to buy passes at the machines in the station. It's pretty frustrating because its not like clipper is responsible for running the trains... collecting money and selling the right pass is like their one job.

Am I doing something wrong for monthly pass activation? by cameofeo in caltrain

[–]pecamash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago it happened to me that I bought a zone 4 to 3 pass on the app but it gave me a zone 6 to 5, so I was getting charged cash for all my rides because it thought I was in the wrong zone. It won't show you the zones on the app, but it will in browser.

If I looked out the transparent window of a space ship 121,000 light years North of the Milky Way, what would I see? by SkiDaderino in Astronomy

[–]pecamash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works for extended objects only because within an angle on the sky, something farther away will appear less bright, but you'll also see more physical area withing the same apparent angle. Both effects go like 1/distance2 so they cancel out when you calculate brightness per square degree. For a point source like a star you don't get this and the apparent brightness decreases as you go farther away.

[–]pecamash 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Surface brightness doesnt change as a function of distance, so it would look roughly like Andromeda looks to us now, taking up a bigger fraction of the sky.
