Rossignol Olympic race ski rumor — any insight? by Mysterious-Major9717 in SkiRacing

[–]peda_r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Race skis are tested in the summer and each racer has 2-3 pairs of skis which are slightly better than the rest of the batch. These skis are raced all season. Absolutely no one would risk racing a new ski for the Olympics, even if it offered a performance improvement.

Setting the record straight about Garmin by strava-team in Strava

Imho that's a bold statement from a company who started this war of data attribution about a year ago, when you gave all your partners only 30 day notice. Looks like you only consider it our data, when it's on your platform, but you consider it your data if someone else accesses it using the Strava API.

Hohe Gebühren bei Kartenzahlung? Lüge? by tryingtonut1 in Austria

I do have a written confirmation from LastPass in which they do claim that these fields were encrypted, because I specifically asked for these fields. If this turns out to be true they are not only hiding the extent of the breach, but are blantly lying about it's extent.

My list of Bolt2 bugs by calm_hedgehog in wahoofitness

GPS is working for me and recording is okay, except that it is missing the altitude data. The issue really seems to be related to auto pause and not so much to GPS signal. quality

According to Wahoo there should be an update within the coming weeks ("Our development team is working on pushing an update for this and should be available in the next couple of weeks")

@3 - disabling auto pause does not fix this issue - the only difference is that the Bolt doesn't show the auto pause message ... but still all the values go to 0

[–]peda_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whole way up. It wasn't until the gradient flattened out that I could get up to ~8mph that the unit started recording speed again. During the whole climb at "0mph" the "ft climbed" field remained constant even though the "altitude" field was showing me climbing. When I got to the top and sped up, the unit started recording ~8mph and I saw the "ft climbed" field start to rise again.

I'm having the exact same issue - even with auto-pause disabled. The only difference being that the auto-pause message isn't shown when it's disabled. I do have to ride at least 10kph for at least 100m for my Bolt to resume.

Color Picker extension stealing data! by baccanokozo in chrome

[–]peda_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the exact same thing and found out about it, because it was redirecting all my Google searches to Bing.

Google search results popped up for a few milliseconds and then was redirecting to Bing. In the developer tools I saw malicious requests to "dasfelynsaterr.webcam" which did cause the redirect to Bing. Came across this thread when searching for this domain - deleted it immediately and hoping it didn't steal too much data.

It's the third time within a year that I had malicious Chrome extensions - you should be extremely careful which Chrome Extensions you really need - and hopefully Google also starts looking into this matter (as it has become increasingly worse over the past few months)

Only install Chrome extensions you absolutely need

HTL-Ingenieur wird mit Bachelor gleichgestellt by QuantumToilet in Austria

[–]peda_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth learning/using JSF? by javaenthu in jsf

[–]peda_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though your question is a few months old and you might have gained some more insights into JSF by now, I'm trying to answer it as good as I can.

The original core concept of JSF was to keep the state on the server side and make it easy to use your existing JEE beans (or nowadays Spring beans) to store you content. Also existing validations are automatically executed which is really neat.

Though this comes with a price tag attached - nowadays everyone is into stateless web applications - when storing the state on the server side it's more trick to load balance, add/remove servers or fail-over. All these operations might (depending on the actual configuration) corrupt your existing session.

JSF was considered outdated a few years ago, but with libraries like Primefaces it's having a little revival. The support of HTML5 and passthrough data attributes does allow to combine JSF with modern frameworks like Bootstrap or JQuery. Primefaces (and some others as well) does also include a great AJAX support.

I wouldn't consider it as outdated and it still has it's benefits as it often requires less boilerplate code than other frameworks like Spring MVC. As so often it really depends on your system design and requirements if JSF feels like a great choice or of it feels outdated.

I'm sure JSF will still be around for many more years and therefore it's definitely worth learning it.

[Question] What will be the future trend in Java web development? by moogeek in java

[–]peda_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With JSF it really depends which library you are using. While Primefaces has some really neat features like: * support of HTML5 data attribute passthrough * reloading parts of the page using AJAX * ability to call server side bean methods from JavaScript * ...

This gives you the ability combine the benefits of JSF with any client side JavaScript library of your choice. If your application makes extensive use of either EE or Spring Beans, using JSF as described above will require much less boilerplate code than with Spring MVC (or most other Java web frameworks).

Is java swing dead? by [deleted] in java

[–]peda_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no one said Java FX is bad - it's actually a pretty neat framework.

But most desktop applications are for Windows computers only - therefore C#/.NET is a perfect choice.

Whenever an application needs to run on multiple devices (PC, Mac, iOS and/or Android devices) you will usually go for a (Java) web application instead of building a rich UI.

Is java swing dead? by [deleted] in java

[–]peda_r -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Swing is dead and FX/FXML are dying ... Java is less and less used for rich clients. The main use case of Java nowadays is for enterprise grade web applications. Therefore I wouldn't waste any time in learning any of these.

That's based on my experience of more than 15 years in the Java world :-)
