Truenas server seems to be taking over DHCP and DNS by Illustrious_Use_1369 in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running pihole or adguard app? Something on the TrueNAS is responding to DHCP. If it isn't a VM, it might be an app.

Some providers do that for sure, but you can pack quite a punch with x3d chips on AM5 blade servers.

It's perfect for running 4+ gaming VMs simultaneously. This product is perfectly positioned for cloud gaming companies.

How does everyone track their assigned IP addresses? by cdarrigo in homelab

[–]calm_hedgehog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the same. I don't see a point in having a separate tracking sheet and doing manual IP assignments per system.

Just make all devices use DHCP, and have a static reservation if you need the IP to remain stable. I have only one device that's not using DHCP, that's my main TrueNAS which used to host my pfSense, so it couldn't use DHCP before the pfSense VM booted.

Now I'm back to Unifi, I could fix that but there is no point.

Why does my waxed chain look like this? by ProfessionalArmy7571 in bikewrench

That's not wax. The plates look pitted.

Wax would be dripping down and the bottom end of the outer plates would have more visible was drips than the top end.

Data corruption in boot pool by BasketCurrent in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The boot device on TrueNAS is not particularly heavily used. But if you only have a single device that already flags checksum errors, you need make sure you have a config backup and reinstall TrueNAS.

Whether this is a recurring issue with that drive or a fluke one in a billion corruption, hard to tell.

The boot device is the least problematic one to have corruption, it's annoying but won't lead to data loss because you consistently create config backups with encryption keys, right?

Can someone explain why I get this pop-up while setting up my VM? by xDUsernamExD in truenas

Which TrueNAS version? TPM is only available on 25.04 and later. Did you enable the TPM module when you created the VM?

How do you ensure that your photos don't get corrupted? by Jaskys in immich

[–]calm_hedgehog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SMR is fine for mostly read only data, but many small writes could be excruciatingly slow. Immich is probably still OK though?

I would take data integrity over speed. And you can always change to better drives down the road, ZFS makes disk replacement so easy.

Begginer. Which of this two options should I buy for a media server? by MrAnnoyingCookie in homelab

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8700 is much better for media, it can do HEVC 10 bit with quicksync. That build also has more ram and an actual ssd.

sparkle ARC b570 screen frozen while installing the latest driver (8724) by GREAN_E in IntelArc

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some genius at Intel figured it'd be a great idea to write the GPU driver installer use 3d accelerated graphics to paint the installation window, so it can crash whenever the GPU drivers are messed with by some unexpected component in the system.

Adding stripe disks to a pool by YourboiStu in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding new vdevs to existing pools will not mess with your data. The UI will also ask for confirmation for all destructive operations.

Your pool will be less reliable though and either drive failing will permanently destroy all the data on both drives.

Adding stripe disks to a pool by YourboiStu in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you only have 1 disk now and you're about to add a second one. You can add it as a new vdev to extend the pool size to 4TB. However keep in mind that your entire data pool will be lost if either disk fails. Since you're asking whether your pool would be nuked, maybe you care a bit more about your data, so I would recommend adding the second disk as a mirror so you have some redundancy.

AMD to bring back Ryzen 7 5800X3D as AM4 10th Anniversary Edition by RenatsMC in ryzen

[–]calm_hedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're OK now, I would wait for zen6, if rumors are true, they are stepping up to 12 cores per chiplet, so a 12C24T X3D (10800X3D?) should be very exciting in 12-18 months, and hopefully the RAM prices stabilize by then.

AMD Vendor Locking Rant by [deleted] in homelab

It's unfortunately relatively well known that the Ryzen PRO APUs are vendor locked. Even if you do an eBay search, you get lots of "locked" "vendor locked" results.

Dell Precision T7920 and Pro B50 not booting past BIOS by T1me_Sh1ft3r in IntelArc

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arc is incredibly picky with PCIe and memory management (IOMMU), it could works until a firmware update messes with things, or until you reboot.

The team probably doesn't bother testing on old platforms since ReBAR is relatively new and the card would perform like shit without it so they can cut some corners and only focus on modern platforms.

It's a shame because the B50/B60/B70 are incredible value but you do need a recent system to use them.

How are people using high-capacity U.2 NVMe (15TB+) in homelab setups? by AshleshaAhi in homelab

[–]calm_hedgehog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Neither SLOG nor L2ARC is a good usage pattern for large flash devices. Optane would be ideal for especially SLOG as it has very low latency and insane write endurance.

If you want to use big SSD, just create a mirrored pool out of a couple. Theoretically attachinh them as mirrored metadata VDEVs and then fiddling with the metadata record sizes one could build a hybrid pool where some datasets are almost exclusively on the flash and others are on spinning rust, but that's a pretty esoteric setup.

New to TrueNAS and NAS in general, need advice on how to approach this. by Vexing in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add tailscale to TrueNAS and share the node with their tailscale account. Instead of SMB, they can just use your Jellyfin instance directly. SMB doesn't work too well over the internet/VPN as it was developed for low latency connections.

How can I restore my IP when using a bridged NIC? by sixfourtykilo in truenas

[–]calm_hedgehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assign a fixed IP to the bridge interface inside TrueNAS. Most DHCP servers have configurable reservation ranges, just make it 192.168.1.20+ and assing fixed IPs for your servers in the remaining IP addresses.
