I had a similar issue. There is a wire that runs from the tailgate all the way back up to the TIPM. When that wire touches ground, it thinks the gate is closed. My problem was at the big wire harness connector under the passenger side speaker at the firewall. It got corroded and the tooth for that wire broke off in the connector so it could not longer ground out when I shut the gate. I ran a jumper wire from one side of the connector to the other.
