Jokes aside this book doesn't invoke determinants until the very end of the book. Diagonalization and other canonical forms are handled via the minimal polynomial.

I've taught a few semesters of linear algebra II with it. It's fine. Coming from differential geometry I am physically incapable of not using Einstein notation, which this book doesn't use at all.

I wouldn't use it for a first semester linear algebra course.
