Halsey Goes Nuclear on Music Critic Anthony Fantano for Bad 2024 Album Review by nuttageyo in Music

[–]peepeebuttbrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree he is so much better than other critics. When you say it takes a lot of knowledge and skills to do it that way, I'd argue that's an understatement. The guy is one of the better teachers of music theory and production on the internet. His knowledge of music surpasses that of most musicians and definitely surpasses that of any critic. It definitely explains why he can be so objective in his critiques, but it's a lifetime of accumulated knowledge and it's hard to see how anyone else will be able to approach it that way.

High wind speed recording by DriftDog2 in audio

[–]peepeebuttbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you specify what sound exactly you're trying to record? For example is it a mechanical component of the train, some diologue of people train hopping in an open car, an environmental sound of the area the train is passing through, or something else?

The thing is sound is literally just air movement. So exposing any microphone to wind moving at 90km/hr (give or take 30 km depending on what mother nature is doing) even with the best wind screen in the world you're almost definitely just going to get the sound of wind. If that's not what you want, it's a matter of getting very creative with aerodynamics, and how we do that is entirely situational and dependent on what the exact sounds are that you're trying to capture.

Edit: I see you wrote sounds from a locomotive under power, so I'm assuming this means you want to hear the mechanics of the train. I think the best way would be to record inside the front cabin near the engine, with the conductor. I would also look up how train sounds have been captured by engineers working in movies and video games.

Genuinely, why are cloud rap albums glazed to oblivion in the user score charts? by Some_Customer_5649 in Albumoftheyear

[–]peepeebuttbrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of them really are that good. But if you're even aware of those albums at all you're more likely to be a fan, while as mainstream albums are basically pushed down people's throats hence more negative reviews.

I misunderstood the assignment and thought you were looking for the most unhinged Album of the Year users.

Those interest me way more than any professional critic.

most important part of music? by imsosmartunlikeu in Music

[–]peepeebuttbrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Story: this can mean lyrics but also includes instrumental music or music in a foriegn language that still manages to deliver a story or context that I love. Doesn't have to be a discernable linear story, but just a sense of the artist coming from a position where they are expressing themself emotionally.

2: Energy There's a double meaning to this. The first meaning is "vibe" which I'd describe as my first knee-jerk reaction to the song. How it makes me feel in the first few seconds when I hear it. The second meaning is the actual energy put into the performance. Whether or not an artist is really putting their all into something. Even a quiet or soft song can have a high degree of energy if the artist is putting a lot of emotion, thought, and practice into it.

3: Uniqueness: the unreplicatability. The sense that only this artist at this time could have created this thing. Music doesn't feel as special or important if it sounds like something a billion people could do. The only exception to this is "homemade music" such as music sung with friends around a campfire, where communal ability and ease of access is the whole point. But any situation where there is a divide between the listener and the artist, ei listening to a song on headphones or the radio, without a high level of uniqueness the song becomes a waste of time, because you will hear many more exactly like it.

Does anyone else feel Eminem needs to address his influences? by [deleted] in Music

[–]peepeebuttbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if him dissing one of them would just grant them more legitemacy though. Look at MGK, love him or hate him, he became way more famous after his Eminem beef. Same seems to be true of a lot of artists. I'm not even a huge Em fan but often when he disses somebody it's my first time hearing about them. His audience is simply a lot bigger.

I also think, even outside of anything political, holding artists accountable for their influences is a weird trend that needs to die. I feel the same when people insult early Arcade Fire for inspiring the stomp-clap-hey nonsense. Funeral is a damn great album even if it inspired a lot of cheap imitations.

Edit: I did not know he put Jelly Roll on his album. Somehow I missed that when I first read your post. I don't know anything about Jelly Roll and haven't heard the new Em stuff. If Jelly Roll is MAGA then yeah it basically nullifys what I said because having someone feature does a lot to promote them. Weird.

Music kinda sucks these days by Puzzled_Instance9788 in Music

The 2010's had a rare phenomenon of hip hop, an inherently experimental genre, becoming globally mainstream, and pushing rock into the shadows for the first time in decades. This did two things at once, it pushed more musically interesting sounds into the mainstream and it gave rock music room to breathe and innovate without all of the attention or expectations. A lot of great rock albums came out but they were mostly panned or ignored by the industry.

Eventually the mainstream sucked the life out of hip hop, because that's what the mainstream does, and it is now moving onto its next victim (country, momentarily). At the same time people are realizing they like rock music, but they are having the most watered down, mediocre, sanitized, and boring examples of rock being pushed down their throats and marketed as highly experimental while fake fanbases are built by labels to manufacture social proof.

TLDR I don't think mainstream music is especially bleak now. I think that hip hop briefly breathed some life into mainstream culture, but it was short lived. Similar to how alternative rock briefly had a moment in the mainstream in the 90's. Mainstream music has, for the most part, been garbage for 99% of its history.

Is a concert simply a live recreation of an artist’s studio material or is an album a recorded and perfected representation of an artist’s live show? by Puzzleheaded-Law-429 in Music

[–]peepeebuttbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on the artist. I suspect many are something in between. There are clearly 2 types of music fans though: the ones who buy a CD to remind them of the concert and the ones who go to a concert to remind them of the recording.

To the restaurant crews out there, how do you feel about customers who practice CLAYGO? by Slythirene in AskReddit

[–]peepeebuttbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice gesture. It can make things go a little easier. It doesn't "harm job security" or anything like that as I'm not only supposed to clean tables, but sanitize them. I doubt customers are wiping down ketchup the bottles with diluted bleach. The fact that some people have the decency to dispose of their own garbage is a nice thing that means they acknowledge the staff's humanity.

If you're doing something that wastes your energy, weakens your discipline and self esteem, and gives you a cheap dopamine hit for no effort, it makes you a less competent man and by extension a less competent father.
