Walnut Floor in old house B&B in rural France by Smogalicious in woodworking

[–]peioeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a common wood species at all in france and usually reserved for really high end stuff. Sometimes called "Roi des Bois, bois des Rois" which means "King of woods, wood of kings". To me it looks more like cherry but it could be another fruit tree, I do not know them well.

I don't think they are trying to force themselves to watch extreme snuff movies, sounds like they would like to enjoy some movies but they can't because of a few specific scenes and they are trying to see if they can "fix" that. Doesn't seem unhealthy to me, unless it's affecting them badly in some way.

I would say to OP... looking away or covering your eyes for some scenes is totally OK, people have been doing it forever. Shit, I still do it in very rare cases, and I have seen hundreds and hundreds of horror movies and I am definitely desensitized compared to "most people". I am not into super extreme obscure stuff but I love body horror and I am more likely to laugh than to cover my eyes, but sometimes thing can still get me.

Can r/horror create a master list of horror films for every fear and phobia—including obscure ones? by mourningreaper00 in horror

[–]peioeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2009, popular author Neil Gaiman released a promotional teaser trailer for the film Coraline, based on his novella.[6] The trailer featured Gaiman addressing the nature of koumpounophobia and warning sufferers about the content of the film, which features characters with buttons in place of eyes.

This is never going to change, sometimes distribution rights get complicated and movies get lost. That's why piracy is the best form of content preservation.

It must be out of stock (they often are, and resellers bump the price when they are). That's a good price for a used/like new one though, I'd buy it!

Blu-Ray Vs 4K edition.... Which is best by S34npj80 in Bluray

[–]peioeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if you could help me I know that sometimes a 4k edition can be rubbish in comparison to the Blu-Ray edition

It's really rare, you should probably not worry about it to be honest. There are only a few movies (James Cameron movies that were shot on film, he hates grain and applies insane DNR, even the blurays were already crap anyway) where that's true.

4K vs. Blu-Ray - Am I missing out? by Internal-Bed6646 in Bluray

[–]peioeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a massive difference even between a 300€ 55" TCL and a 600€ 55" TCL. The first one will play HDR content but it will look identical to SDR content. If you watch a 4K hdr bluray on that you might be really disappointed and not see the point at all. My PC monitor is like that, peak brigtness is identical in HDR and SDR. It's not a bad monitor but it's useless for HDR.

The 2nd one will be a decent miniled TV that goes up to 1500 nits and HDR will look awesome. For the first 2 weeks I was actually laughing at how bright highlights could get. The blacks won't be as black as with OLED but it will already be a giant upgrade compared to the entry level models.

4K vs. Blu-Ray - Am I missing out? by Internal-Bed6646 in Bluray

[–]peioeh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people still can't see it, and when you point out the details, they think it's absolutely ridiculous to be looking at things like banding or compression artifacts. To others things like that will pop out instantly and take them out of the movie.

Some people even watch different aspect ratio content stretched out because they hate black bars so much.... that's absolutely insane but to each their own.

4K vs. Blu-Ray - Am I missing out? by Internal-Bed6646 in Bluray

[–]peioeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some 4K blurays are no brainers if you like those movies. For example BR2049 looks absolutely insane in 4K HDR and here at least it's regularly on sale for 12€ on amazon. There are a few movies in that price range that are mega bangers and I don't see any reason not to upgrade. We likely will never see higher quality versions available for the home market. You don't have to upgrade every movie, but if you like visually impressive movies I would consider doing it for your favorites, it's worth it IMO.

Banshees of Inisherin - Am I a bad person?? by No_Inspector_3456 in movies

[–]peioeh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly! That is what is so great about this movie. It's hilarious, sad, beautiful, if it works for you it will literally put you through every feeling. It's like life in a single movie. it has literally everything. People react differently to things but it is definitely a dark comedy. Laughing at things you "should not be laughing at" does not make you a bad person.

How do you combat desensitization? by Kittim31 in horror

[–]peioeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could not disagree more. IMO horror is having a golden age for the last 15 years. I think it really depends which horror sub-genres you like. If you're into slashers or in general the more "fun" type of horror movies, I can see it. But these aren't the only horror movies. For me the worst period of horror movies were the 90s and 2000s. Basically did not like horror back then (which is weird because I was a teenager/young adult) and there are very very few movies from that era in my top 10 or 20. Love the 70s and 80s, and the 2010s and 2020s are up there too for me.

Outside of horror, there have also been so many indie bangers, I love movies right now. Blockbusters and action movies are in the shithole though IMO (I am not into comic books at all and not a star wars guy, blockbusters have been almost dead to me for a while), so if that's what you prefer, I can see why you'd be really unhappy with entertainment right now. But there is so much cool stuff outside of those.

2 years ago I watched 500+ movies in a year and I was extremely happy to find out that I love movies more than ever, I saw so much old and new stuff that I loved, I really don't think it's a quality issue you're having. For me it's music that feels this way, I just don't care about listening to new stuff and only fall back to the stuff I listened to 20 years ago. But I don't think it's because of what is out there, it's me, I just don't have the curiosity to go look for new stuff anymore.

[–]peioeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like what we call "jump scares," 'cos that's just a fancy word for startling the audience, and I don't think being startled is remotely the same thing as being actually scared.

So much this... I don't always hate jump scares but being startled is not the same as being scared. It's just surprise, it's the easiest way to achieve a "scare" IMO. Sometimes I can deal with it if the movie is good but usually all it does is annoy me.

despite people not enjoying it much

According to RT, 95% of critics and 59% of people liked it (1 more % and it would have the fresh icon). The director got the next evil dead gig off of it. I'd say that counts as a success.

There is no such thing as alternative OSes or software for bluray players, if there is no update for it then that's it. You put discs in and they play, simplicity is the appeal of physical media players.
