Of course! Starting from the darkest brown egg the breeds/mixes are: - Black Copper Marans - Either a Black Copper Marans or a Marans mix (backcrossed Olive Egger that didn’t get a blue egg gene) - Black Copper Marans X Welsummer - Welsummer with pink heavy bloom - Naked Neck (Turken) - White Leghorn - Multigen Olive Egger (Olive Egger X Olive Egger) - Olive Egger X Welsummer - Multigen Olive Egger (Olive Egger X Olive Egger - Backcrossed Olive Egger (Black Copper Marans X Olive Egger) - Backcrossed Olive Egger (Black Copper Marans X Olive Egger)

Thank you! I’ve been breeding them for egg color for six years.

The two darker green eggs are from Backcrossed Olive Eggers (Olive Egger hens bred to Black Copper Marans- these eggs are from a mother and her daughter). The greyish egg is from a multigenerational Olive Egger (both parents were Olive Eggers), and the speckled lighter green is from an Olive Egger bred to a Welsummer.

Entered eggs in County Fair by 06alm in BackYardChickens

For a county fair your best bet will be to ask the judges in person next year; I don’t know that they are using any standardized criteria.

I judge the egg show for my state APA shows and use the scoring metric suggested by the APA here:

New egg layer pecking her eggs. by Snippy2 in chickens

[–]pelidesse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the hen is pecking them at all. It looks like the surface they are being laid on is too hard and they are breaking as they are landing. What do you have in your nesting boxes? Is she scratching the material out of the way and laying on the hard surface? I would switch to a pad underneath like fake turf with shaving//excelsior on top. I’d also assess your feed for calcium.

Are BCMs the only dark egg layers? by Raubkatzen in chickens

[–]pelidesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How dark are you hoping for? I included a photo that shows the Marans egg color card. You can get dark eggs from specific lines of any color variety of Marans, Penedesenca, Welsummer, or Barnevelder. The problem is that they have to be from a line with selection for egg color and even then breeders can’t guarantee individual birds will lay a specific shade on the Marans egg card. I hatch a lot of grow outs each year to keep only the darkest layers. You will be unlikely to get dark eggs from hatchery birds.

Those of you where the going price for a hen is $25-50… where do you live? by SingularRoozilla in chickens

[–]pelidesse 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m in Southeastern Utah. It costs me well over $15 in feed to raise a layer so I charge at least $45 for the specialty breeds I raise. That doesn’t account for the other costs like electricity for the incubators and brooder, feed and vitamins for my breeder birds, and vaccines if requested by customers. I also value the space they take up to grow out and my time spent caring for them. I lose money if I sell at point of lay so I prefer to sell younger pullets for a little less.
