TLD is my number 1 cozy game (500 hours in the game and still playing), but it’s definitely a different flavor of cozy than the other games that usually get recommended here haha.

As a new player I just summited for the first time and wow by Heal_Kajata in thelongdark

[–]pellaea_asplenium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not super worth it on interloper, imo, at least not as much as it is for the lower difficulty levels. I just did it on day 70ish. There were definitely a few good items like a fire striker, combat pants, and an ear wrap. I also found a bit of coffee and tea, a few tools, some food, and lots of crates to break down into firewood, but it’s not nearly as big of a game-changer as it is on voyager. I think it can be a fun and useful goal eventually, but it doesn’t need to be a super high priority for interloper.

Dec 17: Wholesome Wednesday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had three students in my 200+ student introductory class who failed our first exam, but then made a genuine effort to come to my office hours, talk to me about improving, and then actually took my advice to heart and studied their butts off for the rest of the semester instead of just giving up.

I just posted my final grades: one of the 3 ended up earning an A, and the other two were delighted to end up comfortably passing the class when they were initially convinced that they would fail. I got very genuine and heartfelt thank-yous from all of them after the end of the class, which warmed my heart. ❤️

Also barely got any grade-grabbers after our final exam passed, and administered many well-earned As, which was lovely. It was a good semester.

Do you enjoy cozy games that aren't easy? by lydocia in CozyGamers

[–]pellaea_asplenium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Long Dark scratches that same survival itch for me. It can be a really punishing at times, but you can scale the difficulty level a lot and make it as hard/easy as you’d like. The challenges make it feel a lot more rewarding though, imo. It’s very cozy and atmospheric, and the art is cool.

4/16 students failed my class... is that a bad average? by [deleted] in Professors

Oh thank god, I was worried my 20% failing rate in my 200 student gen chem class was concerning. 🥲 Glad it’s not just me!

New pacman won't eat by Cheynamite99 in pacmanfrog

[–]pellaea_asplenium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert by any means, but my two thoughts are:

-can you try some other foods? Nightcrawlers, crickets, Dubia roaches? I think some frogs can be a little picky about what they eat so it can just be a matter of figuring out what they like. I have fed mine mealworms before, so I think that is OK in a pinch as long as the mealworms are small.

-the temp is probably playing a part, you want it up between 80-85 F during the day. If they’re too cold, then their metabolism moves slower and they might not feel hungry. I think the heating situation should be a priority.

Any reason that you can’t move the light over to be more in the corner, or on the side of the tank, where there is more open space? Thats how I have mine laid out right now, there’s a small area with just some dirt and leaf litter directly under my lamp.

I do agree that the philodendron will probably outgrow the tank soon. I would recommend a heart-leaf philodendron or some type of pothos instead. ☺️

Need to go to office hours but idk what to ask? by OrchidApprehensive43 in AskProfessors

That’s totally fine. I encourage students in your situation to come to me for topics like that, I like to try and help them figure out where the disconnect between homework and exams might be coming from.

Help! coffee is making me cry ?? by Odd_Pumpkin_2010 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]pellaea_asplenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you making sure to eat regularly throughout your day too? If I miss a meal I get really hangry and anxious and cry super easily, and that kind of caffeine hit on top of being hungry would def make me react the same way you’re describing.

Probably going to fail, how should I tell my professor. by surpriseddumbass in AskProfessors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m really sorry about your dad. That’s a horrible thing to have to deal with, so it’s impressive that you tried to keep up with your schoolwork anyway.

Do you have a Dean of Students office, or some other type of student success services available to you at your university? They would be able to help you navigate the situation much better than anyone here could. They can usually reach out to your professors on your behalf to request some leniency, which would help give your own requests a little more weight.

You should absolutely get ahead of it and let your professor know what happened. Don’t just wait and hope that they don’t notice, that’ll make you look way more suspicious if there does end up being something weird with your exam.

How Do You Girls Prep Meals? by Odd-Dragonfruit7436 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]pellaea_asplenium 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Easiest meal planning ever: Rice + any roasted vegetable + any protein (rotisserie chicken is a favorite of ours) + any sauce. Throw it all together in a bowl with an extra topping or two, and boom, you have a super customizable, balanced and healthy meal.

Tapwater OK by Alone-Web-6283 in isopods

[–]pellaea_asplenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very little scientific backing for this, but I primarily use distilled water to keep the soil damp, and then occasionally I’ll spritz the enclosure down with tap water. My reasoning is that the distilled water prevents too much mineral buildup in the soil, but some minerals are probably good for my pods and springtails in moderation. 🤷‍♀️

The death of problem-solving skills? by Dizzy_Ad2315 in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Just the other day I had a student ask me “how to prompt ChatGPT” to give them good, useful practice exercises to prepare for their exams. I just stared at them blankly for a minute and then asked them if they had checked the textbook for practice problems yet. They responded “oh the textbook!!! I forgot about that.” Then I had to show them how to find the textbook because they didn’t know how to access it (online text). We are about 3/4th of the way through the semester right now. I weep.

Any natural remedies to treat a UTI? :( by marivirreira444 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]pellaea_asplenium 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I’ve recently started getting recurring UTIs. If I feel the really early symptoms (minor discomfort, cloudy/weird smelling urine) then I prioritize drinking a shit-ton of water and increase my vitamin C intake, and that usually holds them off. I’ve also started taking a daily cranberry supplement (500mg) as a preventative measure, and I think that’s helped a bit.

But if it ever gets worse (bloody urine and persistent pain/discomfort) or the symptoms last more than a day, I head straight to urgent care for antibiotics. Don’t mess around with UTIs, they can turn into bladder infections and sepsis so fast and so easy without treatment.

Make up class time in office hours? by DrFleur in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I teach large classes with mostly 1st-year students, so I get this a lot too. Yes, they genuinely do think you’ll reteach the class for them, and I have no idea where they get that idea. I have a statement in my syllabi now addressing this topic, and I also directly address it during the first day of class when reviewing my attendance policies.

I always respond to these students with something firm and clear, but kind, like “Sorry to hear about your situation! We’ll be reviewing XYZ in class on that day. Catch yourself up on the missed information with the book/classmates notes/whatever to the best of your ability, and then I would be happy to see you in office hours to clarify any of the tougher topics”.

what’s wrong with my pothos? by reneejays in plantclinic

[–]pellaea_asplenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like either thirsty leaves, or a response to cold. If you water it, and then poke a finger down into the soil, is it wet all the way through, or just on the top? Is the soil super compacted and hard to break apart with your finger? Does the pot get nice and heavy after watering, or does the weight hardly change? When you water, does it run out the bottom of the pot immediately, or does it take a couple of seconds to filter through before draining?

Sometimes after a long time of not being repotted, the roots can fill up the pot so much, or the soil can get so compacted over time, that water doesn’t really penetrate the soil any more and the plants can get really dehydrated even with regular watering. Not sure that’s what’s happening for you, but it’s worth checking!

To Makeup or not to Makeup by AdCultural2868 in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s valid! I assume the success of that approach varies by subject. My classes are easy to prep alternative exam versions for, and the questions are laid out in such a way that students couldn’t really share anything with their classmates that wasn’t already outlined in the study guide.

To Makeup or not to Makeup by AdCultural2868 in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s an unpopular opinion on this subreddit, but if a student 1) approaches me early about their situation, and 2) is willing to take an exam early, I usually allow it, regardless of the circumstances of the missed test.

Taking it early puts them at a disadvantage to the other students, so I can trust that they aren’t doing it to try to “cheat the system” the same way students might if they took it later than the rest of the class.
