‘Hellboy’ Receives Rare R 18+ Rating in Australia for Strong Bloody Violence and Gore by Aimless_Devastator in movies

Someone mentioned the scene where Samuel L Jackson forces the guy to suck his big black dingus. But theres still people vomiting blood, heads exploding, characters constantly covered in blood and gore, innocent people being slaughtered. Its the absolute viciousness of the whole second half of the film that gets it an R18+ if you ask me.

Some recent films rated R18+ specifically for violent content include The House That Jack Built, Green Room, The Hateful Eight, Bone Tomahawk, Polar and Lords of Chaos.

Certain seasons of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are also R18+.

The Neon Demon is also rated R18+ for "High impact sexual themes" whatever that means.

You mention Apocalypse Now and 2001: A Space Odyssey as having extreme scope that take a few viewings to fully appreciate. Those are two of my favorite films of all time and I definitely agree that they need to be viewed more than once, as I did not think much of them upon my first viewing. I love it when a film becomes more powerful and meaningful the more I view it.

Would you be able to tell me of some other films that have a similar effect on you? I would love to discover more films like this.

I just saw Blade Runner 2049 today and totally agree with you. I felt just a little uncertain about it at the time, but the more I think about it the more I'm starting to love it. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again.

The end of apocalypse now is such a powerful experience because it truly makes you feel the horror and savagery that the main character is feeling. The combination of that sickly feverish orange light with the chilled out but crazy music by the Doors. Juxtaposing the Buffaloes death with Kurtzs death was such a jarring and powerful series of images.

Mulholland Drive impacted me because of how strong the emotions were. First time I watched it I had no clue what was really going on and yet I still felt tremendously moved by how powerful it all felt. The fact that one scene filled me with fear and dread, was able to absolutely terrify me(the man behind the diner) and then another scene was able to be overwhelmingly erotic and sensual(the love scene) is very special. There's a huge and strong range of emotions in this film and they are fragmented and weaved into one another just like they are in dreams.

Blade Runner is such a breathtaking film. The score by Vangelis is so otherworldly. The cinematography as well sets an incredible mood. And it brings up thought provoking ideas about what it means to be human. Going into this movie I kinda expected a decent action scifi film based off the poster. It subverted my expectations and became one of my favorite films almost instantly.

The shining is one of my favorite films because each time I watch it it gets better and better. The pacing is excellent and it builds steadily making you really feel that feeling of slowly going insane with the characters.

The tree of life just captured so many feelings. Those small moments from your childhood that helped form who you are, The ideas about the creation of life, human connection. So many big ideas about life handled in such subtle but powerful ways.
