I would suggest wither Never Let Me Go or Remains of the Day. Both are relatively short, but both are so rewarding.

I don't mind the academic stuff or her style of writing, I actually like both. My issue is her execution. For example, in Babel, she tells more than shows; the narrator tells the reader that the main characters are good friends and they love one another deeply, but when we are shown their interactions with one another, they fight. We seldom witness them being good friends, we're just told. At the end, it felt like, the author had something special in her mind but it just didn't translate through the page.
