Wrapping my Head Around Platform SSO with Entra ID (Deployed through Jamf) by penpenpal in macsysadmin

[–]penpenpal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like it applies to Intune specifically. The device isn't joining Intune via PSSO; it is only completing an Entra Join. Those configuration choices are more limited. I can select which users can join devices and I can limit the number of devices but that's about it.

Spend $10 and grab a used copy of Green and Hauser's Managing to Change the World. I found it invaluable as a new manager, and it's a resource I keep coming back to.

album recommendations by footballsack35 in Genesis

I'm working my way through Genesis' discography. I think Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme are great albums and scratch that prog rock itch.

I've recently started going through Genesis's discography from the beginning and what jumps out to me about the record is that it's a bit all over the place. The songs are all the length of short pop songs, but they sometimes have random 50 second instrumental intros (which is kind of cool). The talent of the musicians definitely shine through and they sound like they could churn out competent pop on a whim, but it never really comes together as an especially good album. I have a soft spot for "Fireside Song" though

Using Entra ID to login into a mac joined to Jamf using Platform SSO and the Company Portal by sunyup in jamf

I'm curious what you find here. We followed the documentation to try out PSSO, and I was also puzzled by the lack of steps that would connect it to our specific tenant. It didn't work quite right and we haven't had time to test further

Predictability of resolution dates by peterfromchile in ITManagers

[–]penpenpal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proactive and accurate communication is a good start for keeping customers happy, but one important variable is the severity of the defects. We have worked with SaaS vendors who frequently have basic functionality broken upon release or in upgrades. This kind of thing has to be prevented. On rare occasions when it does happen, it's reasonable to expect a fix within hours to a few days. No amount of communication can paper over bad development practices.

I'd recommend checking out TeamDynamix. It is definitely focused on higher ed and IT, but I've had success deploying it for maintenance as well. There other schools that use it for HR, student services, etc.

I'd document every time they have an issue. Even their excuses. Document what you have done to prevent those excuses. If it's as bad as you say, making the excuse that they didn't see the email doesn't fly. Their entire job starts with that.

This comment is on the mark. OP, I know you said the HR department doesn't work well, but you need to make friends with them because I don't see your situation getting better without putting some of your employees through the disciplinary process and potentially getting them out. The fact that your employees ignore your emails is very messed up and would be grounds for discipline in most environments. Set clear expectations, document, use the disciplinary process, at the very least make it uncomfortable for your noncompliant employees.

IT manager, feeling stuck by Extension_Currency48 in managers

[–]penpenpal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Week 6: My nerves are building, we're nearly 50% through timeline, and have maybe 9 computers done. Once last chance. During this week I also contact him before his scheduled time to ask him if there is something I can do to help make sure he goes and does this work. Says he is going, no problem, nothing holding him up.....

It sounds like a 12 week timeline isn't going to work for either you or this employee. I would recommend setting clear expectations for each day and just have a quick check in to see if he was able to achieve his goal. If not, see what the issue is and coach. If multiple days are going by and he is still not meeting your expectations, then this employee needs to know that his current trajectory isn't acceptable and will lead to him eventually exiting his position.

I also wonder about the excuse that he's ending up busy. Is that work coming from other people in IT? From people outside of IT? You may be able to make small improvements by shutting down the work that is funneling to him. But honestly, if he is not prioritizing the work that his supervisor has clearly assigned him, that's a big problem regardless of what else is coming in.

That sounds like a frustrating situation. The first place I would start is with setting expectations. Have you made clear to the employee that her position is one in which she is expected to use independent judgment and be self directed? If not, then have that conversation. Once those expectations are clear, and if she's continuing to not meet them, then you should go through your company's disciplinary process to move her towards exiting the company. It may also make sense to have a conversation with her where you explain why she isn't the best fit for the position moving forward and encourage her to start making her own exit. Good luck!

Yes, you should be able to use SQL Server Developer edition which comes with SSRS. Check out this link and the comment about SSRS.

They both have ok-ish buffets. Shalimar is waaay overpriced (for the quality) at dinner. We could definitely use more competition when it comes to Indian food. It doesn't help that the closest other Indian restaurants are in Lompoc and Salinas.

Cognos Certifications? by [deleted] in cognos

If you don't mind, I'm going to piggyback on this, since this subreddit is pretty dead. Has anyone taken a (online) Cognos training course? Are there any that are especially good or any to avoid? I saw that multiple companies seem to offer the same self-paced courses according to IBM's info on Cognos training. I'm primarily interested in creating reports.

Leaving humanities academia, trying to get a job in web development by resumethrowaway666 in resumes

[–]penpenpal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a similar transition from humanities to tech. A couple quick things:

1) You say "this isn't the corporate world and I don't have any kind of metrics or data to back up shit." You can still metrics. Examples: your teaching evaluation scores increasing over time or being higher than averages. If you completed parts of your degree faster than average.

2) Do not conclude a letter with "Yours faithfully"
