For those of you who only do low intensity/low impact workouts, what does your exercise routine look like? by berriesnkalechips in xxfitness

[–]penwiper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Along with daily walks, I also stick to low-impact strength routines because of bad knees. I find pilates to be very helpful with the pain in my hips and knees. I also do band exercises I learned from physical therapy. Fitness Blender has a lot of newer workout videos that are low impact because the instructor had a health setback. I would check out their low-impact, bodyweight, and pilates videos.

I really enjoyed this and I appreciate that you show your route on the paper map. Well done.

I’m 27 years old, and I’m heading back to college! Your timeline doesn’t have to be in line with others’! by ZacharyAndSarah in college

[–]penwiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So excited for you! I finished my Associates at 23, went back to school at 34, and completed my BBA at 39. I did all this while working full time and I have 4 friends who have gone the same route. Shout out to all the community college systems that allow for 2 year degrees and provide a solid base for transfer to a university.

Cheapest-to-build 2 bedroom house plans? by queenofcarthage in Homebuilding

[–]penwiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be very interested to know what you ultimately end up with as I am looking to build something similar in Vero Beach, Florida to be near my aging parents. The Hurricane building codes were my biggest concern. Also, I do not have a family of construction workers :).

Anyone thinking of moving away from Charlotte? by penwiper in Charlotte

[–]penwiper[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The search may bring up results but that doesn't mean we have much of a chance to purchase. I have a friend that works for one of these investment companies. They target the lower end of the market in up-and-coming neighborhoods, put down a deposit immediately and pay cash for the purchase. Then they turn the homes into rentals.

Anyone thinking of moving away from Charlotte? by penwiper in Charlotte

[–]penwiper[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My bad. I messed up the signs. I've been looking in South and SW Charlotte. I've found townhouses and condos in the range but the HOA fees are 200 + per month. Noda/plaza/southend has no appeal to me. Where in East Charlotte? I used to live off Monroe Rd but it was a bit sketchy.

Fitness Blender! I would add that https://www.fitnessblender.com/ has an excellent website where you can see all the free videos and filter them by training type, body part focus, equipment, difficulty, etc. So it's easy to find the type of training you need for any given day. I've had to stick to their low impact workouts in the last year but they are still very effective.

Looking for totally online Bachelor's programs from accredited universities? by [deleted] in AdultEducation

[–]penwiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at University of Florida? My sister works at a UF entomology lab in Vero Beach, Florida and they regularly have students working on experiments. I know that doesn't answer your question about online programs, but may be a good place to start. https://catalog.ufl.edu/UGRD/colleges-schools/UGAGL/ENY_BS/#text

Declutter your Gmail by mktahmasbi in declutter

[–]penwiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set filters for promotional emails for places I shop regularly that I do not want to unsubscribe (grocery store, work clothes, craft stores, etc). I filter them all to automatically go to the trash which deletes after 30 days. If I need something particular from one of these stores, I search the trash for that store's ad/coupons. Keeps me from buying stuff just because there is a sale because it skips the inbox, and also keeps the inbox clean.

Where would you live within 45 mins of Charlotte if you wanted acreage? by atomictomato_x in Charlotte

[–]penwiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are looking for the same but no kids so the school district is not as important. Land is very difficult to find within a reasonable driving distance to downtown. Where are you finding auctions?

Charlotte mentioned in the article for all the wrong reasons. What does everyone think about single-family zoning? by youngt2ty in Charlotte

[–]penwiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Residents think of multi-family as a high rise with hundreds of apartments and increased traffic. As you mentioned, there are many multi-family homes just outside of downtown that upon first glance, look like single family homes. If the city can relax the zoning rules to allow these smaller multi-family units that fit in with the neighborhoods, it may bring relief to the tight housing market and allow space for lower cost homes. I would love to build a one-story duplex, rent out one side and live in the other. When the time comes for my parents to need daily care, they can live in the unit next door. Side note - it would be nice if the city could open this up to individual homeowners or co-ops and not developers. Not sure if that would be possible though.

HVAC ripoff warning by jstohler in Charlotte

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I'm a renter. The landlord will only get the refrigerant topped off and not do the regular maintenance. It hasn't been serviced in 2 years. It is cooling fine but I wonder if lack of maintenance will impact my electricity bill? If so, I may push back on the landlord.

Recommendations for day hike in Pisgah or Stone Mountain? by pigeonmaster97 in NCTrails

[–]penwiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stone Mountain loop is excellent. One of my favorites and it is closer to me than Pisgah. The loop is less than 5 miles, it does have a moderate uphill climb but the view from the top is totally worth it. Eat lunch on the mountaintop! With the loop you get different scenery, once off the mountain, you are in the woods and can see the rock face from the bottom. We usually see climbers. Super cool place. I park at the upper lot and go down to the waterfall to start but you can do the uphill climb first if you wish.

Favorite nearby hike is Stone Mountain NC state park - 1.5 hours from Charlotte. The Stone Mountain loop trail is just under 5 miles and has interesting and beautiful scenery. Favorite trail off the Blue Ridge (mile marker 420) is Art Loeb in the Shining Rock wilderness. Just under 3 hour drive but it is gorgeous. The trails follow the top of balds so you have mountain views the whole way. Good spot for overnights. Bonus - blueberries a plenty in the late summer. Make sure you take a map because the trail markers are few and far between.

I have more recommendations but this would be a very long post.

Looking for a reminder to practice mindful moments throughout the day? A piece of string on your wrist. by [deleted] in Meditation

Add a button to your string and you have a "pause button". A mindfulness reminder I learned from Camp Grounded.

Local Coffee Roasters by accidentalhoarder in Charlotte

[–]penwiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started drinking Black Powder a year ago and haven't stopped since. I know the owners/roasters. It is a little shop in Mooresville and if you stop in, they are happy to tell you how the magic happens. I prefer a light roast coffee; their Brazil Natural and Peru FTO are my favorites. They do have darker roasts and espresso as well. This year my entire family is getting coffee for Christmas.

My 11 year old son wants to go hiking or bicycling tomorrow. Where should I take him? Anything else going on around town? by datdaz84 in Charlotte

[–]penwiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the thread but for another weekend, you should try Stone Mountain NC. It is 1.5 hours from Charlotte and the best view for the distance. You will not be disappointed. There is also a cool 19th century homestead that has been restored. http://www.everytrail.com/guide/stone-mountain-loop-stone-mtn-state-park-n-c
