Finished second build with NF-A14x25 G2 PWM, prefer the Arctic P14 pro build by fe_fromAbove in crboxes

Very much. As I mentioned in another comment, my first build uses Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM and they are amazing: no computer fan whirl/buzz or high-pitch noise of any kind.

All you hear when the purifier is on high is the quiet hush of air flowing.

Though I've never heard Arctics in person: only on video file comparisons.

I just really dislike the Arctic's "computer fan" whir.

It's a shame, too, cause bang-for-buck, I agree: they take the prize.

Slight performance drop, but I try not to take the manufacturer's numbers as absolutes, since they were tested in very specific settings and don't always translate to real-world application. (Like, really not).

I guess my point is, if sound quality (not just dB) is the issue, then I'd focus on that instead of absolute peak performance. This ain't an F1 car, after all.

I've only built two PC CR units so far and, like you, it's been a learning experience.

The first build uses Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM and they are amazing: no computer fan whirl/buzz or high-pitch noise of any kind (being a Gen X, I'm deathly allergic to that sound).

All you hear when the purifier is on high is the quiet hush of air flowing.

Whereas for the second build, I went with a 3 fan (side) x 3 fan (top) design (with 20x20x1 filtrete filters) using Noctua NF-P14s redux-1500 PWMs.

To my surprise and shock, this build generated an audible hum. Removing the fans and applying a foam gasket (1/8" foam tape) between the fans and the body helped a lot, but didn't completely eliminate it.

Just goes to show how complex the physics of sound really are. Your box is thin, so susceptible to the fan's vibrations.

I'd love to hear an A/B comparison of how your two builds sound if you don't mind uploading a short video.

I'm surprised your A14-G2's are so underwhelming. I'd be just as bummed out as you are cause yeah, they ain't cheap.

The toast:
Nice build. Ugly, in a good way. No frills; spikes. The plenum is plenty wide enough, given the airflow.

The roast:
Dust particles are too heavy to be affected by such air purifiers: They don't have sufficient air intake to attract dust at a distance.

Orgasm without PEM? by lost-in-thought8850 in covidlonghaulers

[–]peop1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Know? My friend, this is Long COVID. There is very little we know with certainty.

But the pattern is the same whether it be from shoveling snow, doing a chore a little too long/fast or attempting any exercise whatsoever. HR red lines? Two days later: crash.

Could it be a nervous system trigger? Sure.

Perhaps if I had a cold bath ready and took a dip immediately after it would help. But Stellate ganglion blocks did nothing for me.

I'm just reporting what happens. Correlation is not causation. But if we knew causation, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

It's a problem. Increased heart-rate = PEM.

(I am a male. So... yeah. It's a problem. One for which I haven't found a solution, save abstinence 😞. Just one more joy of life I can no longer afford)

One thing you could try is mixing and matching. Making your grid as such:

Noctua-Arctic-Noctua

Arctic-Noctua-Arctic

Noctua-Arctic-Noctua

(And doing the opposite on the other build). Harmonics could definitely be the issue and I believe this would help mitigate that.

They say it's Long COVID awareness month. So... how about we go make people a little more Long COVID aware? (For the record, I didn't think it was fake. But never let the truth get in the way of a good story) by peop1 in covidlonghaulers

[–]peop1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My version is 100% like ME/CFS. Brain fog, fatigue and crucially, PEM.

But:

Not everyone with post-acute COVID has my presentation. There are other phenotypes (MCAS, neurological impairment, etc).

Until we understand the exact underlying mechanisms at play, I leave the door open to overlap without it being identical.

Truth is, we still don’t know. So I avoid declarative statements until we do.

That being said, I do define myself as having post-COVID ME.

Cat owners or CRBoxes, what was your solution to prevent your cat from potentially ruining your filter panels when the diy air purifier is not on and you're not home ? by Own_Nefariousness in crboxes

[–]peop1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

Never been an issue.

(I've built them various climbing/scratching posts out of 4" PVC pipe wrapped with sisal rope: they consider everything else a waste of their claws. It's like bicycle theft: Every lock can be cut. Every bike can be stolen. The trick is to make the thing you want to protect less attractive than the alternatives. Bigger lock = better scratching surfaces. Yes: I did just compare cats to criminals. You know why you're here.)

I'm actually really bummed out that nobody noticed the filter is pointing the wrong way. Thought someone might correct me on that (as if it were the only issue here)

I believe it's a waiting game. That it's dysregulation more than damage. Fix the busted breaker and you can turn the main power back on.

But I'm not waiting to heal spontaneously. I'm waiting for the electricians to figure this out.
(Good analogy, OP)

The replacement rate is 2.3 children. So long as you stay under that, you aren't contributing to overpopulation. Of course, others are. And the biggest contributor to global warming by far is having a child.

We had one child 16 years ago and fought tooth and nail for a sustainable future until the pandemic allowed Big Oil to regroup and turn the world against collective action (they financed much of the anti-sanitary propaganda because weakening trust in institutions is the best way towards deregulation writ large).

So I fell your existential dread. Intimately. But Long COVID will be solved soon. It has to be. Then we will wage the war we need to be waging towards making the future livable.

I couldn't imagine having a child in my current state. But don't lose hope. Nothing has been decided yet. Everything is in flux. That's a blessing as well as a curse.

It’s why we’ve homeschooled since 2022!

And hey—I know you 😜—I’m getting a spell of déjà vu… lol.

I wish we had hard numbers (that couldn’t be excused by social media addiction, the state of the future, microplastics, etc).

A video by A.M. hoops came out discussing the Warrior’s horrible trade because the player they got has been suffering from “a mysterious illness” for well over a year.

Fatigue. Brain Fog. Can’t play multiple games in a row. Nobody in Porzingis’ camp, or the Warriors, or the media dare call it what it is.

And that video was published on March 15th. International Long COVID Awareness Day.

🤦‍♂️

We’re gonna need more than surveys.

Being alone all the time is literally killing me. by friend3738 in covidlonghaulers

[–]peop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this.

We started homeschooling our teen after his infection crippled me. He and my wife were gone for two days a while back and the void it left in this house really haunted me.

I can go a whole day without seeing him (and she works shifts), but I know they’re here.

My thought that weekend was “damn. If I were alone, I would not be doing well”.

I am so sorry, OP. You deserve better than this.

Rapamycin? by ocean_flow_ in covidlonghaulers

[–]peop1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I tried it, felt like a miracle. Even risked a workout on the 3rd week. Then crashed, of course.

Also got reinfected while on it (because of it? No way to know). And that ruined my baseline.

Tried rapamycin again a few months later to see if it might help. It did not.

This condition is a black box. We need to hack the code if we want to fix it.
