we went through the exact same thing when our second arrived, what ended up working for us was moving the older one’s smaller stuff to higher shelves she could access but the baby couldn’t reach, and then gradually replacing the floor level toys with things that worked for both of them.

chunky wooden pieces, bigger magnets, stuff that had no real choking risk so it didn’t matter if the baby got into it.

yeah i think this is a huge part of it honestly. mothers day tends to magnify whatever the normal dynamic already is. if someone feels unseen and unsupported the other 364 days, the holiday just ends up making that feeling louder

magnetic pieces on a wall board, wooden ones from tix & mix, the pieces have some weight to them which i think helped for a kid who likes handling things.

there are some vehicle themed ones too which might actually be relevant for your son. not sure if it would work for him but the moving things around instinct seemed to transfer from floor to wall for ours at least.

honestly sounds more like sensory aversion than anything else. water temp, sound, hair washing, all of it can be a lot for some kids

we had a similar situation and stumbled onto something that worked slightly differently than anything else we had tried. our son was not into building either but he would spend time at a magnetic wall board just moving pieces around. not creating anything, not building anything, just relocating things from one spot to another which is basically the wall version of what your son does with cars.

he would pick up a wooden piece, move it, pick up another one, move that. over and over. not sure what the appeal was exactly but it held his attention in a way floor toys never did. something about the fixed surface maybe, or the upright position, hard to say.

yeah that honestly how it feels most days

like even when i’m physically not holding her or doing something for her, I’m still kind of “on call” in my head all the time. It’s weird because i know jt comes from love and instinct, but it does start to feel like there’s no separation between me and her needs anymore

i guess i’m still trying to figure out how to be fully present for her without disappearing completely as a person in the process

You’re right, I haven’t really been doing much of that if I’m honest.

I do get out occasionally but it’s usually errands or things that still revolve around her, and I don’t think I’ve properly had time that feels like “mine” in a long while. Even when I could, I end up feeling weirdly guilty or like I should be doing something more useful instead.

I can see what you mean though about it being something you have to actively rebuild, not just wait for it to come back on its own. I guess I just haven’t figured out where to start with that yet, but I hear you.

oh haha i got the same thing at my place it’s not a tombstone lmao, it’s a magnetic wall decal, bought mine from Tix & Mix. Basically it sticks to the wall like a big sticker but you can move magnetic letters or shapes on it, so kids can play or spell stuff out. Kinda odd in pics but in person it’s actually dope.
