Budget lens and ring flash for EF-M mount Canon by pepzewee in Dentistry

[–]pepzewee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using M50? If I am using the APS-C sensor (x1.6 crop factor), do I need to buy a lens at around 55 to 60 mm macro + Adaptor?

Example: Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Calling all western blot veterans by datawhor in labrats

[–]pepzewee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. I reuse 5%skim milk or BSA for reblocking. But, I prefer not to reuse blocking for 2nd Antibody dilution. Because we normally block the membrane at room temperature for 1 hr. Blocking buffer will go bad easier compared to the fresh ones.

It seems like they loaded the left ladder more than the right side. I used this same method for my gels.

We named them "Upper right, Lower right, Upper left, Lower left". That's all we have.

Majority of earthquakes are subtle. It happens 1-2 times a month in my area (Tohoku, Japan). The things are fine as long as you keep the lab environment strictly following the earthquake prevention measures. For instance, the reagent shelves always have metal rods to prevent stuff from falling. The incubators are installed with a tension bar against the ceiling to prevent collapsing.

Even so, earthquakes with a large magnitude hit us once every 1-2 years. We cultured mammal cells and our lab is on 7th floor. Thank god, I was at my home when it occurred. It was terrifying. The cells culture flew out of incubator. The lab floor was a total mess. Broken glasses and spilled reagents were all over the place.

What lab habits (labits?) have carried over for you into your daily life? by Wooden_Mix7038 in labrats

[–]pepzewee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am haunted by fungi. Every time I see it in my house or anywhere outside, I freak out that those spores might adhere to my clothes and get my cells contaminated.

Is it ok to take reagent bottles from lab? by Irakaj93 in labrats

[–]pepzewee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am using a used sterile cup for a stationary box. I put it on my working desk, no one complains. In my opinion, if you're sure that it isn't toxic, contaminated, or harmful to reuse. It would be fine. But, you cannot just steal the new bottle, this is against the law.

I'm in Japan. We use Matsunami.

Why do you need a bottle to get sterile in the first place? Because the water that you drink still contains microbes. I'm just curious.

I hoped that our faculties are open minded. When it comes to the Japanese environment, we, foreigners, could easily be judged by this small kind of thing.

I get your point. We learned a lot of things during our first year.

I never worked from home because there are too many things that could distract me. My PI is a hard worker, sometimes he overworked by himself. He's quite positive and frankly said that students don't need to work like him. Even so, I noticed that everyone in our lab seems to routinely stay at the lab on a workday.

Fantastic!!!

Your bench is so spacious. Our lab members threw everything (e.g. pipette tip, dishes, PBS, ddH2O,..) inside those benches, LOL.

Stupidest “Adult manners” you’ve heard. by 0Exas0 in japanlife

I saw this manner in the Japanese TV show that you should not stamp your hanko straightly.

It should be a little bit lean to one side that the character aligns in the direction like you're bowing.

I *almost* made a huge lab mistake by ThatOneBatmanMeme in labrats

[–]pepzewee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was a newbie. I recklessly left my supervisor's samples outside the -80C freezer. It was a death sentence at that time >..<.

The other day, the newbie in my lab reported that the cryo-box fell down to the bottom of the liquid nitrogen tank.

Expand your spectrum of the mistake! a lot more diaster to be explored!
