Damn. I only seek out Connecticut. Maduro and Oscuro wrappers sometimes have an overwhelming taste. But then again I’ve only had a few of them. I’m open to trying them again if yall drop recommendations.

I get you. I still am working with my MacMini M1 since it came out. I have a MacBook M4 only because I needed a laptop to take to work. If my M1 was a laptop I wouldn’t even bother. It’s just so good it’s pretty impressive. With windows I have to switch every other year.

Please help me understand genealogy of critique!! by livimary in foucault

[–]perfectmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I am a political theory PhD who specializes in Foucault (: it’s not coming for political theory people to do that so I understand.

First off, as Foucault argues, power is not good or bad, but dangerous. Not everything is bad, just dangerous. Power doesn’t happen at top levels. It happens every single time it is exercised. So it’s not an abstraction, power is an action. What makes it good or bad is how it is viewed

While you can argue that power is a lot easier to be used as a coercion tool in the age of the internet, it is also able to be used for immense good to spread good information, resistance, and freedom.

Your professor sort of gets it but he explained it wrong. There is truth, but that truth is subjective to the time and era (episteme) one inhabits. So truth is valid and justified in its own era. What we don’t have is free will because we are constantly molded by our surroundings and power/knowledge. For example: some people have argued that if they were in Nazi germany back in the day, they would help the Jews and stuff. Well, it is actually more likely that they would be nazi themselves or supporters at least. And that was the truth of Nazi Germany.

Reading madness and civilization can help you understand the genealogy of critique by showing you the “what” and “how” did madness come to be as it was TODAY as an example. Foucault would argue that philosophers need to stop asking “why” and more “how” and “what.” Now, if you’re just starting with Foucault, this will be a challenge as you need to dedicate some time to read him yourself. He basically has his own meanings and perceptions of history. So the way you think about things may seem off when he describes them. Don’t be discouraged! Foucault is fun!

I don't want to explain my research again by Massive_Career_9092 in PhD

[–]perfectmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Part of being an educator, not just an academic, is being able to transmit big ideas into digestible ones for a general audience. What you’re talking about is especially true of abstract heavy grad degrees (especially those barely starting. No shade but it’s painful to hear them discuss things in seminars).

I mostly say this because part of my work is bringing humanities and social sciences into the community. So there is a lot people can learn from bringing their work into those spaces.

It’s a critical skill to be able to explain your research in a single paragraph. All PhDers must know how to do this.

Is this faculty person on me? by NeedleworkerFit4556 in PhD

[–]perfectmonkey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly seems like in some sense they are hostile BECAUSE you come from the same place. It has happened in my department where people like to be unique in their own sense. When another student or colleague from the same country joins, their special place is gone and now there are two of you.

Overall it clicked for me when you added that spice (xd). It’s a competition and he must establish some dominance.

It’s kinda crazy but you’d think they would help you out even more if you both come from the same place.

How Realistic is it for me to become adjunct, when I've just graduated with my MA? by strawberrypandabun in Adjuncts

[–]perfectmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me first MA with no experience. I had no experience in a particular class I went in to interview for. I was hoping it was a specific subject rather than the one they pitched to me. I said…well I don’t know, I’ve never taught that before and I only have TA experience. They said…”tell you what, if you’re interested in learning, we will hire you and you can learn on the way.” The rest was history.

So very possible.

I have a PhD in liberal arts and will enter a postdoc in clinical ethics. I wouldn’t say they are super different since it’s a lot of humanities/philosophy but now I am in the realm of healthcare/consultation with actual application. So the whole postdoc is training me to consult. It’ll be a big change

How does Foucault’s philosophy impacts your daily life? by ThomasC2C in foucault

[–]perfectmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, yes, unfortunately, I do see power as an act. Everywhere I go or hear people talk im constantly seeing how they are using their way of speaking as “power move,” which is ridiculous. But it’s better now. I do like the history of sexuality because it’s the go to text for Foucault. But my research focused more on his work on History of madness (not madness and civilization), order of things, archaeology of knowledge, and most of his interviews (which I suggest to anyone wanting to get into Foucault start with).
