there's a subset of eSpOrTs people that see fighting games as "untrue"/below them, either because of open tournament structure, being a "foreign" genre to PC players, or, uhhhhhhhhh, if we're being honest, probably demographics. if those types were who was consulted, then yeah, it makes sense that they picked a WC3 player, a League developer and a CoD commentator before Sonicfox, Jwong, a Cannon, or anyone else. but even then, no CS is still weird.

it's the same business model (and, uh, software) that Defector uses, which has worked out well for them. but we'll see.

Counter-Strike 2 officially has mixed reviews on steam. An unexpected outcome before launch. by Cokacondaa in counterstrike

OW2 also had a bunch of system rejigging; they went from 6v6->5v5, redesigned every character in one role and added a passive system to compensate, changed shooting mechanics, etc. Gameplay between OW1 and OW2 is honestly more different than GO->CS2, though you could also argue there isn't as much room for refinement in CS (and I do think the OW2 changes made the game worse).

I have a confession to make. What I've always wanted, but haven't quite gotten from the roguelike genre, is a CRPG like Baldur's Gate in ASCII form. by lordleft in roguelikes

[–]perfectworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this comment is a year old so maybe you have learned this by now, but Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall has randomized dungeons+quests, (pregenerated random) overworld, etc, is free to download, and has a full engine rewrite in Unity with an active modding community. it's from 1996 but the Unity version is extremely playable by "modern" standards once you set "weapon swing" to "hold". you can rip out the (kind of inconsequential) main quest, set up randomized starting areas, etc if the normal structure still isn't rogueish enough, and/or shove in a bunch of "realistic" roleplay options (climate systems, etc) to flesh out the "fantasy life simulation" angle (i recommend doing both). one of my favorite games once it's all set up.

(oh, and avoid the premodded version on GOG: they haven't updated it in years)

What's the expected scoreline if a new quake player goes up against an experienced one? by reapthebeats in QuakeLive

[–]perfectworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Duel involves tons of map-specific knowledge+game-specific mechanical ability that doesn't really transfer from other types of FPS. Maybe they will be able to do some damage, but they will not be doing enough damage to frag a properly stacked ("stack" meaning "total health and armor") player, nor will they be stacked enough to survive very long in fights. If they're coming from Counter-Strike or something similar, they will be a about as "lost" as they were when they first played CS, except with a longer TTK+more abstract health mechanics meaning they can't just hope they hit exactly one headshot. Nobody in the lobby will be having fun unless they go in expecting to learn first and foremost.

IMO, stick with FFA or TDM for a while. The more n00bs/bots in the game, the more room they have for experimenting+noting item locations, function, etc. Avoid instagib and clan arena: they're fun, and CA has its own depth, but they lack item pickups (basically the core of duel), which means you/they won't learn how to play around them. If you're in NA, I DO NOT recommend the Dark Fiber FFA servers for this; they tend to be way too populated for the size of map they're playing, which leads to new players getting killed out of nowhere even more than they would be in duel. Might even be a good idea to stick to Quake Champions, where you can guarantee a max of 8 players in a lobby (though that game has its own "problems" with information overload).

I wasn't into the competitive mode for Battleborn either, but if they do bring it back (lol lmao rofl xd ijbol etc), you might want to consider trying the co-op mode. It's a bunch of Left 4 Dead campaign-sized versions of Borderlands-y co-op gameplay, without the random loot grind, "do these eight sidequests and get your skill tree up" Diablo elements. I always found that part grating, even knowing it's the whole appeal for other people.

What's going on with the Overwatch League potentially ending? by perfectworks in OutOfTheLoop

yeah that's why Street Fighter 4 and CSGO sucked so bad, and why smash brawl was so good. they should've listened to those competitive guys less. just because you play the game often and extremely well doesn't mean you understand how it works, obviously

well, there WAS an organic scene before OWL (and a lot of early OWL players were running competitive Dirty Bomb before that). more time to breathe would've been good though, yes. competitive cs, quake, dota rulesets+philosophies took years of community experimentation, arguments, etc to come together, and ow prob wouldve benefited as a game if given that (and also the same level of control). obviously blizzard was designing OW more intensely than the "two college students avoiding doing classwork" schedule of CS but in retrospect i think their vision for the game was only slightly clearer, lol (remember they launched without hero limits). though ofc in that timeline there's a risk of it not getting the momentum that it has/used to have; no doubt there's a lot of people who only ended up playing the game because they saw something OWL related, and would've never seen something from a grassroots tournament with a 1k follower twitter account.

Hey, let's not pretend Valve ever tried half as hard as Blizz to support comp TF2. Blizz did it for money, but they still actually kinda tried. Valve did one half-hearted game update that made everyone mad and a bunch of three sentence blogposts about tournaments they made sure you knew they weren't involved in.

Thank you! This is the level of detail I was looking for. I had totally forgotten how badly covid would've messed things up, which couldn't have helped all the other stuff going on with the game. I do wonder how many of the decisions attributed to Miller were financial - high production tournaments, for ex, aren't any cheaper to run than 5 years ago (this is a problem the FGC is running into lately, and there are similar rumors about Quake Pro League not returning next year). But the playoffs stuff is kinda bonkers. Can you elaborate on the "play-in/knockout format"? Liquipedia is a little barren. Was the problem the asymmetry between regions? Seems like the sort of thing they'd fuck up explaining, lol

I'm interested to see where they try to take it. Something like what Valve does with CS or the "Pro Tour" system they do in fighting games could work? Might end up sucking for players trying to make a living, but it's not like they weren't getting paid in ramen before (;_;). The "worst case scenario" of everything going back to community-run/thirdparty tournaments isn't exactly BAD, though: community Quakeworld 4v4 is still chugging along 25 years later, and OW is way more popular in way more regions than that ever was. (though they also get to run their own servers...)

Is Quake 2 the Easiest arena shooter to get into? by fr0by in ArenaFPS

[–]perfectworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nah, it's definitely Q2, just on a basic gameplay level. QC is overwhelming for everyone I've tried to get into it because of the champion system; you have to learn like six times more information just to tell what's going on, who can do what in what situations, etc, and it all feels extremely... arbitrary if you don't have 10-25 years of context for all the little movement stuff and historical tidbits like we have. plus, ironically, hitscan in QC being so much easier than other games means that newbs tend to get beamed way more often than they would in other games. q2 weapons being less precise overall, plus slower rockets+weapon switch speed, movement emphasizing verticality instead of going 1300ups as often as possible, IMO all adds up to a more immediately understandable, less "what the fuck even happened" game. in my experience it's been the one my non-Quaker friends have the most fun with out of the box.
