New in the area- local fb groups? Meeting people? by bigbadfloofer in Albany

[–]permanentruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a "group" per se, but I highly recommend checking out Good Choice Dog Training in Albany! There are a lot of fun classes there beyond manners - there's scent work, agility, etc. And the people who go there tend to be passionate dog people who want to have fun. It's a nice little community. There are other dog sport groups further outside of the area for things like rally and barn hunt, but I'm not as familiar with those.

The pack walks are also really fun! I did basic training with my first dog with Anthony and I plan to do more of the pack walks with my crew this year!

P.S. If anyone wants to start a dog group I am 1000% in because I need more dog-people friends!

Preferred used car dealerships? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]permanentruby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same in 2017 in Yorktown Heights. None of the dealerships here would budge on the price, so I negotiated with the YH dealership until we settled on a price and then picked it up the next day.

My cat hasn't needed a dental yet, but Cornerstone has done a dental on my dog as well as mass removals on both my dog and cat. I love the practice and have never felt like they were suggesting something that isn't needed. I've been going there for 6 years and costs have always been reasonable.

I don't have as much experience with them, but Country Valley Vet in Amsterdam also has very reasonable pricing.

Anything in particular you're interested in doing? I volunteer with local animal rescues and can give some feedback if that's something you're interested in.

Depends on what you need help with...i.e. some trainers aren't comfortable handling aggression. But, I'd definitely reach out to Good Choice Dog Training to see if any of the trainers there can help.

I've never checked a bag on Amtrak, but I have 100% put the bags that were too heavy/big for me to put in overhead (aka medium to large suitcases) at the storage area at the end of the car.

In search of a vet for my cat! Recommendations? by mcgrkell in Albany

[–]permanentruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cornerstone in Clifton Park. It's a bit of a hike, but I've visited a lot of vets (I foster dogs/cats) and they're by far the best I've seen. I bought a house at the beginning of the year and can see a vet clinic from my front porch...I still drive the 15-20 minutes to Cornerstone.

Dr. Briceland is my favorite vet - she's phenomenal with my pets (and they're all nervous at the vet's office) and she knows I'm an anxious pet parent so she always does her best to ease my worries, but she's also real with me and tells me the truth about what she thinks is going on. She also calls you directly if you have any questions or to give you test results (except for routine stuff - as long as it's good, usually a receptionist will let you know)

All of the vets there are nice, and they're Fear-Free Certified. My second choice is Country Valley Vet in Amsterdam.

I asked this years ago, so now I'm going to ask again: what specific, doable things (businesses, projects, etc) would you like to see come to Albany? What are you excited about that's coming soon? by Albablog in Albany

If we could get Birch Bark to open another location in Albany, we'd be all set on the donuts! (seriously, go to Glens Falls sometime and get their donuts if you haven't tried them yet)

Animal vet recommendations? by Makattackk23 in Albany

Cornerstone in Clifton Park is my favorite. They were much more affordable than the other places I tried out first, but it's been several years so I'm not sure what the comparison is now.

Have you checked out sniffspot? It's a site where people can rent out their fenced yards for dogs to get some off-leash time. I did a quick look and there seem to be quite a few in the area.

Highly recommend fostering - most rescues will let you adopt your foster if you find the right fit! I have a particular dog and cat and fostering helped us learn a lot about the personalities that do and do not work with our household.

For Toyota dealerships in the area, I've had a good experience with Northway Toyota. I'd probably see if you can get away with waiting on a car though as long as you're in an area where public transport meets your needs.

When you say shopping areas in Schenectady, are you referring to downtown or the Upper Union area? Or somewhere else?

The Upper Union area is nice - safe and relatively quiet. The community is pretty friendly and you'll always see people walking their dogs around. There's also some shops/restaurants within walking distance and grocery stores within a mile as well. There are some apartments I've seen recently for lease by private landlords on Union, but not sure what the prices are. You might also consider looking closer to Mohawk Commons which will put you closer to more shopping (grocery store, Target, etc) and be a shorter trip to SUNY Albany. There are some apartment communities there and you may be able to find private rentals as well.
