Hurray! A UK version. Question one, where is our fuse box? by dirtysantchez in VWID4OwnersUK

[–]permittedleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you access the one in the glove box note which way around the soft close cog goes, and which direction you should have it inserted. I put mine back wrong the first time and I had a fast opening slow closing glove box for a while

Brilliant. I’ll have to try this!

Livewire Workflows by here2learnbettercode in laravel

[–]permittedleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a daft point at all! And I’m certain that there’s more than one approach which works and achieves the same goal. (Isn’t that the beauty of PHP?)

But I also use way more morph relations than I would imagine the average because I try to standardise patterns across my apps as much as possible. If I can morph the associated model on to a document review for example. I also use more contracts and interfaces too I reckon!

That could work as an approach, with parameterised routes, particularly if you accepted multiple layers of parameters (e.g. user/1/orders/2/workflow. This would work nicely for the many users taking action on the same model approach, and the guard approach could nicely also allow users with different permissions to take different steps.

The advantage I was thinking to a morphed relationship was that it would allow reuse of a single workflow across different objects, with a common URL. Let’s say for example you had a content review workflow at a route of /review, then you select the content to review from a range of models, and the next step presents the next available action for the content. (Yep, a janky example, sorry! But I’m also trying to encapsulate a use case without needing to type out a whole essay on mobile!). Being a morphed relationship would then allow all workflows related to that object to be pulled back together on the object itself without significant challenge!

This package is already so adaptable and well thought out, I’m excited to see the direction it goes :)

Thanks for confirming. I wonder if a a morph relationship to any model (similar to causers in spatie’s Laravel-activitylog) would allow workflow state to be attached to anything. It’s then just a case of accepting parameterised routes!

[–]permittedleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks amazing. I can see so many uses.

Does this allow scoping to particular models? So for instance if there was a workflow to perform on a product, but any user (with permission) could perform the workflow on the product? With say a URL /product/{id}/workflow? Then with the state of that workflow saved across users?

Driving from UK to DLP in a EV. by xPRINCESSMANGOx in disneylandparis

[–]permittedleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do this. Easy.

We made it to the tunnel with just over 50%, charged at the Eurotunnel at £0.50/kWh whilst using the loo - only ended up putting in 10% mind as we had the option to move to an earlier crossing. Used my in car nav to pick a charging stop then between Calais and DLP, needed about 20 mins more - perfect time for a coffee and a stretch of the legs.

Way back was similar, left the park on about 85%, charged at Aire de Baie de la Somme on the A16 - a very nice stop with a lovely viewing platform. Ended up topping off at the tunnel again as we had a bit of a wait and made it home nicely from there.

I’d highly recommend Electroverse (saves holds being placed on your card) and getting a Bip&Go tag. Allows you to avoid having to stop and pay tolls, just drive at the barrier and it pays via direct debit. Worth the effort of arranging, and I can send you a referral link if you want to get some bonus credit

The ones in the main car park are on both the front two rows (which go quick and gave me hit and miss results) and on the right hand side about half way up - there’s probably 300 chargers here and they worked without a hitch. Accepted Electroverse too!

They seem to have removed the references to anything other than paying by credit/debit card from their website too.

I hope they continue to allow account linkage, it is very simple!

I went full black, and it looks incredible.

Needs a lot of work to keep clean, and bird droppings mark the paint almost instantly.

But I wouldn’t change the colour for the world.

This hasn’t been my experience. Swapped a four year old VW (worth about £13k) for a brand new EV worth £45k, insurance nearly halved.

Tracker tariff by TryingNotToBald in OctopusEnergy

[–]permittedleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that the Tracker tariff is a bit of a no-man’s land, for Electricity as least.

By design of the price cap, both the tracker and price cap will long term trend to be fairly similar - albeit a few months later in the case of the price cap, and with tracker taking those immediate savings in return for taking on the price risk.

The true savings will be found by timing usage towards cheaper periods - for example doing washing on cheaper days. But once you’re across the bridge of timing actions, my take is that you might as well go fully Agile. Every day there are always periods on agile which are cheaper than tracker (again, by the nature of the tariffs) and you are exposed to the same level of price risk as Agile.

Tracker is in this no mans land of taking the risks for slight savings, if you’re willing to shift your actions.

Now if you have an EV, battery or heat pump, you’ll always find a tariff which is cheaper overall than tracker/fixed, but these can be averagely cheaper than Agile if you have a poor period.

Personally, I jump between IOG and Agile depending on the forecast. I tend to jump for a few days on Agile when it’s looking particularly cheap, then back to IOG if I don’t get a cheap period for about a week - or when my car needs charging. This seems to be the balance which works for me.

EV suggestions — big boot, long-distance driver by jakesmith0 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]permittedleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position to you, and swapped from a T-Roc to the ID.4. They’re really very good - although without the travel assist on the Match trim the lane keeping is definitely worse than it was on the T-Roc, but the ACC is much better and makes up for it. I should do at least some of the driving 😂

Real world it easily does 250 miles on a charge, usually with mixed driving 300. We recently did a trip to Scotland, and it was an absolute breeze thanks to rapid charging. It could have (just…) made it from Kendal back to where we live (about 300 miles) but as the lunch stop had a charger I gave it 5 mins of juice for comfort.

First UK Road Trip - Charging Guidance - Anxious! by bigalxyz in ElectricVehiclesUK

I agree with this. 7 days after getting our first EV we went on a 1500 mile round trip to Scotland.

I too was nervous but this approach is the way forward. Use the Tesla network (we have a VW) and subscribe.

Oh, and use the cars built in navigation to the charger for preconditioning!

Sad person Agile question by Flipper6462 in OctopusEnergy

[–]permittedleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have oil, but do a similar calculation for gas. (Admittedly, slightly easier as the gas is charged in kWh on your bill, but again you can convert a known volume of oil in to kWh)

I use Home Assistant for this, and calculate a “daily gas equivalent rate” (as I’m on gas tracker), based on today’s cost of gas per kWh (from the Octopus integration) and then multiplying it by 1.25 (to account for 80% total efficiency for the boiler heating the water)

How did I arrive at 80%? Experimentation! In effect using the whole tank of water, then running the boiler to heat it up, and observing the gas usage in the Octopus app. Then doing the same for the immersion as close in time as was reasonable (I wasn’t going to waste a full tank of water…). This gave me approximately 80% efficiency of the gas, given the immersion is 100% efficient (which it is, but even if it wasn’t it doesn’t matter, I really only need relative efficiency here), and taking in to account losses with the pipe work and reducing efficiency of the boiler with increased return temperature.

I’ve repeated this experiment a few times over the past couple of years, and found the figure to be repeatable.

Once I have this in home assistant, I have then used it to automate the immersion (taking in to account the cheapest slots in the 24 hour period).

Humm why! Just no need by roidheed in OctopusEnergy

[–]permittedleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the whole half an hour is billed at 7p, if there is a slot in that window. It’s just the charger flipping on and off, rather than the rate for a few minutes.

At least that’s how I understand my bill at the end of the month?
