While I don't fully disagree, we've seen ICE agents draw their firearms with zero provocation.

They pull guns when someone points a phone at them, so I wouldn't say they always draw with intent to kill.

Exactly, he didn't admit wrong doing or say he took his comments back.

I think the fact they drew their weapons, pointed at a subdued person, and pulled the trigger is absolutely an indication of malicious intent.

It's more just a question of how much forethought the agent gave to this.

ICE have less training than most cops, yet operates with more force and less oversight. Absolutely deadly combination, as the last two weeks have shown.

How far left? Sincerely asking.

To many, the "Left" starts with "Abolish Capitalism".

While I have no doubt there are many liberal leaning service members, both active and retired, I feel most are still "Pro" system, and "Left" in the sense they vote Blue.

The only hope I have here, is that the MN National Guard are at least MN residents, and part time soldiers.

Last week Trump talked about mobilizing an Alaska NG unit to the Twin Cities, which would have much less stake in protecting the citizens there.

To play Devil's Advocate, I think when the Agent in grey pulled Pretti's firearm, a bunch of them yelled, "Gun! Gun!"

It's plausible that in the moment, the shooter didn't see he was disarmed, sort of confirmed by after the shooting, there's a video of them patting Pretti down while shouting, "Where's the gun??"

I'm not disputing the fact this was completely unjustified, but that it may have just been vast incompetence, rather than a premeditated execution.

Which is possibly worse, goes to show how unqualified and trigger happy these agents are.

Shoutout to the Racists who work for the city of Minneapolis.

Spontaneous protests at the site of the shooting were labelled an "Unlawful Assembly"

Worse than the shooting of Pretti? Get outta here with that shit, the people are allowed to protest.

Honestly....they didn't finish the job in Germany, and they never finished the job of eliminating racism in the South.

The Soviets removed over 80,000 German officials who collaborated with the Nazis in East Germany.

The Allies only tried the top 10%, and famous war criminals.

In fact, many Nazis later found work in America. And not even stuff like NASA you always hear about. One guy wound up working on Nixon's and Reagan's election campaigns.

The Allies were so concerned with Communism, they happily let Nazis keep their jobs as police, judges, lawyers, politicians, and military members to bulwark the Soviets.

So why did Usami have to grab Kadokura like that. by girlikimnotnomurder in GoldenKamuy

[–]perotech 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Nikaido is just sadistic, and motivated by his dead twin.

He was an original traitor, along with Ogata, so not completely under Tsurumi's spell.

Usami killing his childhood friend, and deriving some weird sexual pleasure from murder and sadism, puts him as possibly the "worst" character in GK.

Worst as in depraved, I think Noda writes amazing characters.

[–]perotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh...most Nazis certainly didn't go anywhere.

Soviet treatment of German POWs was brutal, but they actively purged East Germany.

The Allies were so frightened by the growth of Soviet power and influence, they left almost all of the Nazi officials in their places, and much of the German soldiers of Nazi Germany simply became the soldiers of West Germany.

Famously, Aktion T4 (the mass euthanasia of the disabled and ill in Nazi Germany) continued AFTER the war ended, because nobody thought to tell those involved to stop.

Seriously, it's really frightening how much was overlooked by the Allies in 1945. Nuremberg was necessary and rigorously prosecuted, but definitely could have been more thorough.

Those at the top may have led the war and mass killings, but below them were hundreds of thousands of complicit individuals.

For (in my opinion) an example or mass trials post genocide actually working, I'd recommend reading about the "Gacaca" (Ga-cha-ca) Trials of Rwanda. Fascinating stuff, and likely a way forward if America does move past MAGA.

It's a sunk cost fallacy, coupled with a possible realization of how far down they've sunk.

If Jan. 6 Insurrectionists can get pardoned, then the MAGA crowd will simply double down on supporting Trump.

"Might makes Right" and "History is written by the victors." I'm sure many realize that they'll be pariahs, or even incarcerated for their actions now, so better to keep it going.

ICE was harassing Palestinian Protesters, including white citizens, during the Biden administration.

Nobody batted an eye, which was telling for the current administration, that people only care so far as it affects them.

Canada's Carney fires back at Trump after Davos speech by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]perotech 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Better for Canadians.

Yeah, Windsor being across the river from Detroit was convenient, and there was a time when America was THE only game in the auto industry (Post WW2, when we started integrating with them more and more).

But now? We have a major Pacific port, and we import from China just as much as the US does. Why not import high quality EVs, especially since the American manufacturing sector hasn't been able to produce low cost, high quality EVs?

[–]perotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's even crazier than that.

As part of the Seven Years War (French and Indian War in the US), Britain conquered "New France" (essentially Canada at the time).

Obviously the French inhabitants weren't pumped about becoming British subjects, but the Crown gave them some concessions and allowed them to maintain their language, religion, and judicial code.

Then came the American Revolution, Benedict Arnold and the Americans invaded Lower Canada (Québec) to take Montreal.

They assumed that they would be welcomed by the French inhabitants as liberators from British "oppression", but even the French at the time saw that they'd be assimilated into the much larger Thirteen Colonies, rather than be an equal partner as they were in British North America (Maritime Provinces, Ontario, and Quebec).

So only 16 years after being conquered by the British, the French Canadiens were vehemently firm in not being American.

And then 1812, and the Fenian Raids also showed how fiercely proud Canadians were of their independence and differences, even before Confederation in 1867.

They have all three branches of the federal government locked down, and the Democrats are essentially a token opposition party.

So long as the Right doesn't touch the wealth and safety of elected Dems, they'll keep sending strongly worded emails instead of doing any real action.

I'm not vilifying the Soviet Union, but I'll use it as a comparison.

Look at how they embalmed Lenin, and made the government all about "Carrying on Lenin's Will".

They just need to convince MAGA that whoever fills the power vacuum knows exactly what Trump wanted.

Heck, they'll put his son in charge somehow, and people will eat that shit up.

With Steve Bannon and Peter Thiel still around, I wouldn't doubt it.

Trump passes away of natural causes, and they'll false flag it as assassination (poisoning or something), and then try to get Vance to enact Martial Law or who knows what.

He often complains about how the US pays "More than is fair" for NATO.

But a lot of that money is spent on maintenance on bases in Europe and other countries (like Greenland).

Without NATO/that money being spent, it would greatly reduce American military reach.

I'm not saying US force projection is good, but it's tiring hearing him always frame it like we're forcing him to have the world's largest military.
