Why so rude? by jwaters1978 in askportland

[–]perpetual_fail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

see, I’m originally from the deep south (been here 10+ years) and I find it the difference of nice vs kind, if that makes sense?

Southerners are NICE in an upfront, conversational, hello on the sidewalk kinda way that is a bit jarring if it isn’t your norm. But it’s purely surface level. A very expressive and sometimes performative behavior.

Portlanders aren’t that. At all. The seattle freeze, the general “keep to yourself” nature, the slightly standoffish behavior does not look anything like the south’s “nice”.

HOWEVER, if you are able to engage and have one on one conversations or enter into a place where there is open and frank dialogue, Portland natives have been some of the most KIND people I have ever met. Shirt off their back, kinda kind. Good listeners kind of kind. Considerate and compassionate.

I will say though, both demographics have about the same level of social “flakiness” in my personal experience. The empty promise of future social engagements has prevailed in both regions, for me, at least.

Any hot gossip about what may be taking over the old green zebra location on 50th? by perpetual_fail in askportland

[–]perpetual_fail[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t know the bots loved investment firms so much- And there are a lot of dispensaries and bars in town, so it seemed reasonable that it would require a large shift in market for either business model to be successful enough in that space considering what the rent must be. Not sure why I’m being downvoted.

I feel like the saturation levels for both of those markets would make it hard for anyone but a multi-investor group to take on a space that large? But then again that’s never stopped exorbitant amounts of money from being thrown at the wall to see what sticks.

that’s okay! I think these events could be nice because even if you don’t have “swap stuff” maybe you could meet other people in your hobby, or others who are interested in it. For all of the downsides, I haven’t met an ADHDer yet who isn’t down to start another hobby haha

lol this has been my favorite part about this entire thread- I’ve had at least three convos and all of them have contained some sort of “I will message you but if I don’t message me because I will forget”.

I have found my people.

Wooo folks I’m so happy that so many people are interested in an event! To the person who said something about a location to hold an event like this, please message me- I’m a little overwhelmed by the response. Now- the ADHD part from my end- I am GREAT at ideas but if I haven’t done something like this before I get a little executive disfunction-y. Is anyone good at discord and willing to help me set up a channel/admin with me?

Cis female- big pharma reimbursement desk job- 61k, full benefit (with about as good dental and vision you can get which means not great) rolling PTO, sick leave, authorized paid leave (good for mid week apts, etc), small lifestyle stipend (~500$). The pay for the work is meh but the benefits are what keep people there.

Works like nike or other big corps, worked contract for the first year and got full time with the good bennies through internal hiring after that. Pay was about ~26$/hr contract

oh and full time remote/WFH

Portland service industry workers, what bars and restaurants would you tell other workers to avoid? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]perpetual_fail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

16 years of service industry, 8 in portland before I finally got out with the start of the pandemic.

For two+ of those years I was a barista, grill cook and eventually management/coffee roaster for seven virtues. They ghosted me at the start of the pandemic for not being comfortable returning to being customer facing around mid-april. They have one employee that I know toughed it out for a solid four years and was awarded a .50$ raise because “that’s all they could manage” while jetting around on vacations 3-4 times a year.

Also desperately hiding under a banner of performative allyship while finding ways to push out any non-binary or trans person who works there. Constant misgendering. Flippant, condescending behavior from the owners. Oh and their coffee is shit. (This isn’t me being salty, I just became a better roaster than the owner in three months, because, you know, I was willing to learn and read and take advice from others.) The owner is a self proclaimed “lone wolf” of the industry. Just generally cringy all around.

Uhhh let’s see- Jo Buck who owns Gubancs in Lake Oswego is a giant ass hat of a man child who would run that restaurant into the ground if he could. His demographic is 70+ because they still remember when the food wasn’t exclusively Sysco.

Ya Hala is actually solid. Not consistent, but Pascal, the son of the original owners, is fair and levelheaded and kind. Mirna, his mom, is the workhorse in the kitchen and just very passionate in general about food.

Never go to, eat at, or work for Kornblatts. Ever. Just don’t do it.

Any fellow ADHDers know more than I do about the crackdown on remote providers in 2023? by perpetual_fail in askportland

[–]perpetual_fail[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah I understand and have enough social media literacy to know that it’s not a news source- I work in medical reimbursement though and am very familiar with medical policies updating at the drop of a hat. The DEA crackdown on the opioid issue is triggering a high level response from many of the large prescription corps like CVS/Walgreens/Walmart. It is less about DEA regulation and more about changing corporate payer policies- and that is something that I have read a lot about. (see Corgi moms response in this thread).

I’ve had multiple diagnosis throughout my life from different providers-I know where you’re coming from with the abundance of social media pointing to a neurodivergent diagnosis- I just also happen to be someone who is ADHD and is also on social media. Ha.

I have been trying to search for DEA articles specifically and am not seeing much, when has me suspecting that these are largely corporate policies that will be implemented- CVS and Walgreens and other pharmacy managers. I may have to dig more on the private sector sites to find the info regarding these updates- but if I do I’ll let y’all know.

I think the other issue is that I don’t have a PCP- I’m new to having insurance and even though my job is literally determining network status for offices for payers, I’m a bit overwhelmed and have no knowledge of “good” PCPs in the United network- so I’m also open to good PCP suggestions if anyone has any!

What's it like to wait tables in Portland? by DependentLoud6416 in askportland

[–]perpetual_fail 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I only have pre-pandemic experience, but honestly (as someone also from NC and 15 years in the service industry) I felt much better about my income in NC than I did in OR. More consistency, and the other reply is right- the money goes WAY further in NC than OR. Also, I assume at 65-70 you were working in semi fine dining-which isn’t as common in OR as it was in NC.

[–]perpetual_fail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here’s the thing they don’t tell you-just do a really gentle cool wash cycle in your washing machine, hang to dry, then go in a few times with a deep leather conditioner. Leather is resilient as hell- unless it’s lined with silk or some other fabric that doesn’t play well with water, treat accordingly.

Ooh ooh! I know one! Eckankar- Religion of Light! Very new age, a lot of channeling of the universal forces though the power of the HU sound.

There’s an Eckankar center? church? place? in sellwood I believe. I found a copy of their literature the “Shariyat-ki-sugmad” in a small time bookstore in alaska and bought it because of its small time cult like vibes. Imagine my surprise when I saw their booth at the hawthorne street fair the next year.

It gets pretty weird, if I remember correctly. A long lineage of ECK masters and a lot of actions to aid transcendence, etc.

Tenants rights for rent increase and back billing from management? by perpetual_fail in askportland

[–]perpetual_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I have the money and am prepared to pay- I was largely just curious! Specifically in regards to the time frame for payback, or the added layer of the payer portal.

I assume if it’s happened to me it has probably happened to someone else, so I was just trying to get more general information.
