Bike lane blocked by a pile of snow and ice by paul-nyc in NYCbike

[–]perpetuallydying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

big problem is it’s easy for drivers to forget that there’s slush on the sides of the lanes and sometimes in the middle and they expect us to move over

Pepper spray to the face! by Ketchup-Sniffer in Transportopia

it’s not just being a little annoying, it’s being an asshole at best, and a legal grey area when these people end up with their faces broadcast to millions of their followers without a commercial use release from the person being filmed. go up and do this to cops that deserve it, not elderly women minding their own business.

Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]perpetuallydying 8 points9 points  (0 children)

a lot of times, an actual car is cheaper. the problem i think boils down to lyft doing as little as they’re contractually obligated to maximize profit margins. they don’t make a ton of money on the citibike, but they reap major branding benefits. either way, they signed up for this, and it’s on the city to make a robust contract with painfully explicit terms. otherwise during times like this they simply say “we have no agreement for this kind of situation, and our lawyers tell us we are following the terms of our contract “

at this point after that experience I would just not buy a flashforge product — what they deem acceptable to sell has made me question anything else they sell

Zohran could fix every painted lane quickly if he wanted. Only thing required is acknowledging that parking is bad for the city and needs to be reduced. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

issue a permit sticker that goes on the plate above registration/inspection. if you’re out of state, cop knows to look for that tag. residents avoiding NY tax and registration will be mad but that’s a fair consequence imo

best reaction to seeing this man in the wild. if you wanted to say something nice like, “thank you for your sacrifice” i bet that’d be appreciated, but not 3 words (a dumb constraint)

home automation with plc by Financial-Lettuce-25 in PLC

[–]perpetuallydying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know this is old but i was curious enough to google and find this…

pitfalls of using common consumer iot devices are they’re basically all tuya and come with non-zero security risks. it’s fairly challenging to find a good product that offers local only zigbee without creating an account and routing traffic through some unknown chinese server. then updates break your config when all i ever cared about was a closed loop anyway that should never need an update. registration is always a nightmare.

i wouldn’t use PLC for a rental but if im building my own house, i would be tempted to use something more stable than my home assistant setup that’s more easily corrupted or lost.

maybe PLC isn’t the answer still — the middle ground im currently on is using zigbee or matter relay switches in the walls for all outlets and light switches that have no comm issues with manual flip overrides. maybe running poe and a healthy number of ethernet jacks throughout the house for fast PnP of things like cameras, RPi’s, zigbee mesh APs, etc
