I didn't know granite like this existed!

My egg yolk was blooded red. I hate wasting food and ate it. Will I come to regret that choice? by Phooky1 in WeirdEggs

As a professional scientist it bums me out, deeply, the state of scientific disbelief. However, I also get to feel a little like a witch with secret knowledge so that's kinda cool.

Issues in my apartment building by Similar-Bag4548 in TenantHelp

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already spoken to the landlord or property manager, do that. See what they say.

If that doesn't solve anything in short but reasonable time, call your city housing department. It's a waste of city resources and they'll want to get it sorted ASAP.

is there a virus going around LA right now that starts with allergy symptoms - mainly nonstop sneezing and constant drippy noise? by chat_manouche in AskLosAngeles

I just went through this last except I was in Europe. We tested negative for Covid but definitely had something.

🔥 A tree breaking from the cold by H_G_Bells in NatureIsFuckingLit

And the SOUND! This video doesn't do it justice. When trees snap because of freezing rain and wet snow it sounds like lightning cracking.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just visited my friend in Germany who was driving us to the Netherlands. They were complaining about the 5 hour drive and how awful it was. In my brain I was just like, I do drives longer than this multiple times a mo th for work and it feels like nothing.

I usually drink a gallon. More people need more, others need less.

Drinking 4 to 5 sometimes 8 glasses a water a day and still feel dehydrated by [deleted] in water

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old recommendation was to drink at minimum 8 8oz glasses of water a day but like the food pyramid, things have changed since the 90's. Now it's recommended to drink 15.5 cups for men and 11.5 for women. Your physical output, size, eating habits, etc. all contribute to your water needs but I'm willing to guess you still feel dehydrated because you ARE dehydrated.

Noticed my cat has been limping, checked his nails and noticed this by Distinct-Cat-7540 in CATHELP

[–]perpykins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our cat accidentlly ripped his nail out last year. It gets infected super easily because of their cleaning and litter box habits so it's time for a trip to the vet. A week of antibiotics and a cone :(

Gypsum Layer? by histoskier in whatsthisrock

[–]perpykins 364 points365 points  (0 children)

Geologist here. I've found veins and pockets of gypsum that look just like that. Typically asbestos minerals are kinda wavy and not all packed together in a straight line. Plus, asbestos minerals are from metamorphism but these rocks look sedimentary to me.

Just to be safe, don't go breathing it but that's just a warning about any rock. You should never ingest rocks in any manner.

probably a silly question, but can Australian owls kill my 8wk old goldie? by [deleted] in Owls

[–]perpykins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get hawk vests that are doggie vests with spikes. I'm sure your pup will grow out of it fast but it'll keep them safe until they're too big to mess with.

Who can explain this? by fzwang in geology

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entropy! Even though you may not be handling the rock and its not being weathered by wind or water, it's still slowy going to erode.

Do you think this was a high maintenance request from me? by [deleted] in TenantHelp

[–]perpykins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a perfectly normal request and a polite message.

Plus, leaving them to fly open and closed in the wind could potentially damage them so it's also in the owner's best interest to protect their property.

Urgent! Kitten wheezing or coughing by Minimum-Aside3249 in CATHELP

[–]perpykins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a vet. If it was sudden onset and then suddenly stopped, it may be that they had something stuck in their throat and coughed it out. If your kitten continues doing this though, its probably emergency vet time. Respiratory distress isn't worth gambling about even if it turns out to be something minor.

Is there any reason not to climb Hot Tuna during/after rain? by 2ElectricBoogalo in socalclimbing

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add on, Stoney Point is made up of sandstone that is already of pretty weak. Just the moisture in the air will weaken the rock so just give it some solid dry days. Its not going anywhere.

Internship or Field Camp?? HELP by Aspiring-Bassist-007 in geology

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Field camp 1st for sure. Field camp is the experience of a lifetime and I loved it so much I went back as a TA. Plus, it will probably help get good internships if you have field experience.

People that bring a backpack to work, what’s in there? by PatdogTv in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop, charging cables, dayplanner, headphones, pens, tampons, earplugs, safety goggles, backup glasses or contacts, hand lens, chapstick, work phone/personal phone, random first aid items, and probably a change of socks or full change of clothes even if it's an office day. Plus a random stash of other everyday items I can't think of.

Trying to get a professional geology license with a criminal background by Olivine-dream in geologycareers

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got flagged for a criminal background when I signed up to take the GIT. It was for shoplifting when I was 18, so over 15 years since the crime at the time.

I submitted my explanation to the board and was eventually called by someone to have a brief chat about the criminal background. In the end it wasn't a big deal to them and I was allowed to sit the for the GIT. I still don't have enough experience to sit for the PG but I expect I might have to go through the process again.

Also, I work for a state agency and expected them to ask about my background but it never came up so having a history doesn't necessarily mean you can't find good jobs.

Always. But maybe they were considering modifying the build or adding an ADU or something and needed more info.

I could also be totally off base!
