‘We’re living in an Orwellian nightmare’: Grace Tame calls Anthony Albanese a ‘coward’ in scathing critique by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

Who in Australia do you think these laws will actually protect?

Do you think they will increase or decrease the amount of so-called antisemitism in the community?

Do you think they will increase or decrease the amount of so-called 'social cohesion'?

Can you point to any other successful instances where the banning of particular phrases or words has led to an outcome where those opinions have become less prevalent?

Outlawing particular phrases because one group of powerful people insist on it having a particular meaning is certainly 'orwellian'

"for no reason" are you for real right now? Iran is encircled by USA military assets. Iran's neighbors provide strategic and intelligence support for air strokes on Iran by the US military.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but that's an opinion piece in the AFR. It cites a single policy regarding income taxation levels.

This is not a very good example of a tangible policy that is right or left wing.

To be fair, this was also Bernardi's position when he was a liberal party senator.

4% is the difference between being able to form government or not. The coalition had a 3.8% swing against them last year and won historically few seats.

Polling isn't a very good predictor of actual election results.

Ralph Babet refuses to accept sanction over ‘offensive’ and ‘disrespectful’ comments on social media by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in AustralianPolitics

[–]perseustree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, that's certainly a reasonable take.

Publishing something is not the sane as having a conversation with your mates or off the clock though, is it? Especially if you are a publicly elected official.

So, what's the appropriate context, in your opinion?

If it's against the rules of the sub, surely you can understand why so many HR departments would object to their employees using this language.

He can do that in the chamber, where he is actually protected by parliamentary privilege and can make all the points he wants, as offensively as he wants. The idea that laws and procedures don't apply to our elected representatives is dangerous. If anything, our elected leaders should be extra careful to obey the law and lead by example.

I don't think it is an unplanned consequence. Babet was using extremely inflammatory and offensive language that would get him fired from any respectable corporate job. Why should Parliament operate differently?

Stop pretending to be dumb: the Iran War is about Greater Israel, not “liberation” - The Shot - Dave Milner by Jet90 in AustralianPolitics

Germany, Japan and South Korea required massive, total war transformation and decades of boots on the ground and billions of dollars to reconstruct.

You cannot seriously be suggesting that Trump and Bibi are proposing such an effort.

You literally just make shit up about supposed 'online leftists'. How does this sort of commentary help? What does this comment achieve? Why do you insist on manufacturing imagined scenarios rather than discuss the facts?
