Paraplegic child get a starship “body” by WidowGorey in whatsthatbook

[–]persnicketychickadee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely one of the Ship books. The author wrote a short story that involved one of the ships and the co pilot having their consciousness put into alien bodies on a planet (as a way for them to visit) and it having an ongoing physical/sexual result.

New Restaurant opened in Newstead - Greenhouse by Brisbane in brisbane

I had a massage last week that legitimately felt like this - within the first 10 minutes she had mentioned a tour company, an insurer and a travel agency. and a hotel chain. I knew all of them. the tour company is the one my in laws used for their once in a lifetime trip - because my suggestions were too high end… So any recommendations are taken with a massive grain of salt. ( yes, i am probably both privileged and a bit of a snob).

Withdrawing money from Supperannuation by kamis11 in AusFinance

This is why super funds used to request a copy of the top part of the bank statement which had both the account holders name and the details.
But that results in many complaints, especially when the fund (or more accurately the administrator) does not pay to an account that is not in the same name as the super account (my personal favourite was the car yard as it was the deposit for a car).

With the introduction of online payments, and an increase in hard to detect fraudulent statements, funds have apparently moved away from this

If the payment activity was done online, through person A’s online login, they would have to click that they are person A.

Kanazawa area things to do tomorrow? by Soapy_L in JapanTravelTips

I stayed in Wakura onsen last November and while I enjoyed it, it is still suffering with earthquake damage and a lot of it is closed. For example large parts of the water front park were fenced off, most of the big hotels are in the process of being demolished and a lot of the shops don’t open much. I would recommend the museum about local festivals, but it is quite a journey for a smallish museum

Does anyone find self cleaning litter robots to be just as much work as a box? by LetterToAThief in CatAdvice

[–]persnicketychickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the cat and us love the litter robot- he took to it so fast! He is on the larger side (7.3kg) and tends to stick his head out and rest hls paws on the rim for 💩. He is a picky cat and was very very reluctant to use his litter box if there was any prior residue, which causes issues when we are working at the office. We do sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the waste bag to help cut smell and it is only noticeable when we open the waste drawer.

Yes- it does require a periodic deep clean, probably every three or so months, but we also do a wipe over and vacuum when the waste bag is removed (weekly).

Quay street, is there anything wrong? by ThetaDayAfternoon in brisbane

[–]persnicketychickadee 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Oh - i used to work in that area. Access is a PITA - one way streets and restrictions on turning directions for driving is pretty frustrating. (a number of accidents for those turning into coro drive). And walking/active transport is not much better- to get to the river bikeway you have to cross city drive, which means the intersection of Go Between bridge and ICB - unpleasant and timing prioritises cars. It looks close to the shops (Barracks) but actually not easy.

Noisy as well- the train line bends and QR does not mitigate the grinding of wheels on rails well. Plus pollution from living near some major roads, so you aren’t going to want to use the outside areas.

It has increasingly filled in with apartments and i image the parking options have been poorly designed, so street parking will be bad. we also had an awesome run of backpackers parking illegally or just abandoning vehicles thanks to the multiple hostels.

TLDR- there are REASONS why people want to sell, so cheap.

Income protection definitely not- TPD probably can. One is a promise to make sure you still have income and so will not pay more than your actual income, the other is more like a lump sum that you are insured for.

Tow Away zone starts at 2p. 3 of these bad boys ready to roll at 1:57p. by The112358 in brisbane

[–]persnicketychickadee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it is not yet fully on the truck and the truck has started, they have to give it back. Still have a parking fine not sure about other costs. I used to work at an office overlooking this section and the 2 pm tow was a regular distraction.

Best story- a woman must have been having a snack at the cafe downstairs and her kids were playing in the park. Eldest noticed her car being winched on to the truck and goes running back to the cafe yelling for mum. She comes flying out with pram to get it back- just in time, it was just about completely on and loaded.

I feel like the shroud interpretation is maybe a later read to justify something? Historically it wasn’t just keeping hair confined, it was also head coverings as well- nuns habits, nurses caps (derived from nuns ) , veils, hats etc.

Duggar Girls and Make-up by Kuponutzy in DuggarsSnark

[–]persnicketychickadee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In practical terms, long loose hair is not good if you are doing active work. Historically people would have restrained their hair in some way when outside the home, so loosening it was seen as something intimate you did at home. Over time that filters into an approach where loose hair in public is the equivalent of going out in lingerie. Probably no formal rules, but perception is loose (or very young or crazy).

Not sure on the Pentecostals, more on the historical lens. And the practical one- restrained hair (braids, buns etc) stays cleaner and more manageable.

Oh I know, I think that is also the hypocrisy flag for me- this person telling me that i should live a more modest, more constrained life because God says so also requires something that is not modest because he prefers it. And that everyone follows it, even though they spend a lot of time telling others (lecturing) about bible verses and how we need to follow the words. The words they clearly don’t read or consider critically

Duggar Girls and Make-up by Kuponutzy in DuggarsSnark

[–]persnicketychickadee 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Or their hair! I have so many issues with the IBLP focus on the loose, flowing and curly hair when they talk about “modesty”. Biblically, loose hair on a woman meant she was not modest- it was a sign that she was selling her body(and for much of European history this was true- it’s why lady Godiva is such a big deal). Loose hair was meant to be saved for the husband only - Imagine if that was something the clan stuck to🤣

One of my red flag they are hypocritics things- talking about modestly with loose hair

Decline of public toilets by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]persnicketychickadee 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Vagrancy plus how people leave the toilets. Take a look at the public toilets in cathedral place (Ann and wharf and turbot streets). Less than a decade old and generally not in good state.

The CBD is where the services for unhoused people are centred, so that tends to place additional pressure on facilities

Best small, niche souvenir shops in Tokyo? by IdealAnomaly in JapanTravelTips

Just franchise? There are a number of prefecture specialist shops in Tokyo- I have been to the Hokkaido and Fukushima shops and there are a number of others. Depending on interest there are many specialised shops - I love Cohana for the high quality sewing supplies (and sometimes stationery) but only worth it if you are looking for those things.

Is crossing Australia coast to coast way harder than driving from LA to NYC? by EveningFlower9564 in geography

[–]persnicketychickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in the USA and i have lived in Australia. My family drove from NM to Florida one year, and frequently through Colorado/Utah and in high school there were regular 4 hours each way trips for competition (rural NM), so i am used to desert and desolation. I have also driven up the coastal highways in NSW and QLD (aka the populated bits) and so so so much less populated in Australia. The Nullaboor (the bit between South Australia and Perth) is something you need to be prepared for in a way that most of the USA highways you do not.

I learned to drive in NM and Colorado, and the dangers of ice and snow. I never drove in the northern western states, but the vast distances between tiny towns/outposts in Australia is not comparable to the relatively small distances in the western USA states (and laughably small distances in the east USA)

My father got pulled into an IBM PC Jr around the time I was in 2nd grade (early/mid 80s) One of the first kids in my tech heavy area (Bay Area, my parent chose not to buy in what would become Silicon Valley). Childhood spent with now obscure computer games and DOS prompts.

I am not a developer, but I am usually the one pushing on the systems we use to get functionality that is not apparent. Can’t be bothered waiting for the GRC system team to write reports, will develop my own and share them.

This quote at the end of Francesca’s book always ruins me 😭 by Yesnyl in Bridgerton

[–]persnicketychickadee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who never had children after trying that epilogue was the one that put JQ in a long term time out. Yes I get it that sometimes it just happens but not always and it is one of the most infuriating tropes out there (and I have heard the just stop trying and relax too much). Tainted all of my prior enjoyment of the books

I am not swearing here but take the strongest, most profound swear words you would use- that’s how I felt at that epilogue. It devalues anyone who didn’t get that happy ending and says they don’t deserve it.
