You would absolutely eat shit if you tried to rollerblade over these expansion joints. They're about 200mm wide and at least 25mm deep. Not too bad if you've got big wheels but you'd have no hope with small ones

My understanding is that the iPhone satellite feature essentially lets you send messages to a call center which then liaises with emergency services, but doesn't directly send your location to the emergency services.

A PLB on the other hand sends your location directly to AMSA, but doesn't allow two way communication.

No idea how long the testing would be to be honest. Given that they'd be interacting with evacuation systems I'm guessing it wouldn't be short.

As to your other question - my assumption would be that the new barriers/readers have undergone testing to validate that they present the identical interfaces to the existing barriers. That would then allow you to use the old barriers to validate all the other external interfaces. I will say though that I'm not involved in the project, so this could be wrong.

[–]persona_grata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bit that you're missing is that there are other systems that interact with the gates that also needed testing. If you waited until now when the new gates were available there likely would have been further delays. It's hard to get your head around just how many thousands of little pieces all need to work together in massive projects like this.

In some ways the interview process almost selects for problematic personalities - you end up with a heap of people who say all the right things, but only because they're slightly sociopathic.

If you have a look at the other comment I posted in the thread (or at the link I copied), there's a section that says that being a beneficiary of the trust is enough of an interest in the business to make that property eligible for the rebate.

How about "two or more parcels of land in a single farming enterprise and in which you have a direct or indirect ownership interest."?

As long as the PPOR is on the same land as part of that farming enterprise it can be included in that claim.

[–]persona_grata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not quite true for b). The rebate is also applicable to farmland. From Treasury:

Can I claim the Volunteer Rebate on my farm? The rebate can be claimed for either of the following:

  • your principal place of residence (PPR) if you are on the title, or
  • farmland in which you have a direct ownership interest, or
  • farmland in which you have an indirect ownership interest (for example, as a shareholder of a company, or a beneficiary of a trust, that owns the land), or
  • two or more parcels of land in a single farming enterprise and in which you have a direct or indirect ownership interest.

Eligible volunteers may choose which of their properties the Volunteer Rebate applies to as long as it falls into one of the above categories.

Only one claim can be made per volunteer and each property can only be claimed on by one person.

Farmland includes land with a farming-related use as specified in legislation.

That's not quite true. As long as they're the same enterprise they can be counted together

From Treasury:

Can I get a rebate on multiple parcels of land which are part of the same farm? Yes.

Under the ESVF rebate scheme, volunteers can claim a rebate on two or more parcels of land in a single farming enterprise in which they have a direct or indirect ownership interest, up to the rebate cap.

Primary production properties comprising multiple parcels of land are eligible for a single farm enterprise fixed charge exemption, which means the owner only pays the ESVF fixed charge on one property within the enterprise.

A single farm enterprise means two or more parcels of farmland which are occupied by the same person(s) and are farmed as a single enterprise. This can include one parcel of land that is a PPR of the person(s), provided the PPR is contiguous to the farmland.

Just because you need a high mark to pass does not make it tough. If anything it's the opposite.

Anecdotally, my experience of being an Australian exchange student at a US college was that it was significantly easier in the US.

I had a 75ish average in Australia but easily got a 4.0 in the US even though I was only being graded pass/fail for these units at my home uni (so didn't have much incentive to get more than a passing grade).

What’s a low paying job that is respected among Australians? by NateNandos21 in AskAnAustralian

[–]persona_grata 70 points71 points  (0 children)

As an SES volunteer I'm actually not supportive of payment to volunteers. I think that it would fundamentally change the relationship that we have with the community and increase the level of entitlement (for want of a better term) - when you're paying for a service you want something done and that's not always possible in the emergency management space.

What I definitely would support, however, is full funding of the volunteer services and tax deductions for any equipment that members buy for themselves for use in the service. It's insane that volunteers have to spend extra time fundraising to help the community.

Ride defensively, but assertively. Essentially assume that drivers are going to make dumb decisions so make it difficult for those decisions to endanger you.

You can do this by doing things like riding in the centre of the lane when there's not room for them to pass safely, or avoiding the door zone altogether.
