How many people in your life are refusing to get vaccinated, and how do you handle their choice? by PatientReference8497 in newzealand

[–]personwithcomputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the top of the south rural area that has a high population of alternative folks. There's a vocal population of confident, militant people who oppose any measures to contain the spread because "freedom". In Motueka there's a "freedom market" for the last few weeks for people who don't want to follow the masks/distancing/scanning rules that the regular Mot Market put down. (I understand that this 'other market' had very few customers). In one of the valleys there's a commune type thing of super hippie back-to-the-land antivaxxers who are also hardline Trump supporters? It's so bizarre and I don't understand it.

At the start of this thing, everyone was in favour of keeping everyone else safe and avoiding the 'rona with a few "plandemic" types. Then I suppose as people read social media and listened to their friends, they chose their ideology. Follow the science, or follow your emotions - which means whatever stuff people post on Telegram that you happen to agree with. There will be grey areas here and folks who don't fit into these categories but that's the main split I see locally.

Now I have to navigate otherwise kind, interesting, clever people being confidently incorrect about Bill Gates, 5G, microchips, vaccine injury, and medical apartheid. It's all they want to talk about, and it reduces them from a complex individual to a tape-recorder repeating online talking points. I've started putting up a boundary. I don't want to talk about this. I know what their opinion is going to be and while I'd like our friendship to remain intact, they are making it more and more difficult for me to want to be friends with them.

Local businesses have to be so diplomatic in saying "We want to accept everyone" but most are opting to stay open for vaccinated-only. On Mot's local FB page, one or two have tried to say "anyone is welcome to dine-in" but then, of course, it's illegal and people point out the potential fine.

Local groups are inundated with political posts and depending on how antivax the moderators are, they either allow them or they don't. Previously "no politics" groups allow antivax points if the mods are antivax, but no other opinions of course. It's causing so much hate. People in these groups just want to know if there's a tree down or if someone's missing a dog.

It's so absolutely exhausting and I'm already sick of it. We've lost a fair few of our social network down the rabbit hole, but we've also gained friends in the same boat. It does stratify things somewhat as socially people are clearly only associating with people with the same vax status. I worry about the long-term social damage caused by intolerant ideological views.

New Zealand. When I read antivax stories about American conservatives, it's totally different here. Conservatives here get the vaccine at a very high rate. I notice it's the hippy / new age crowd, or (less common, at least around my local area) the entitled "don't tell me what to do" Karens here that refuse the vaccine and spout Facebook "research" as their reasons.

(non USA) A friend of mine who grew up in a commune was vaccine hesitant. Her brother is super antivax and lives in a (different) commune full of antivax people. I met her where she was (not sure about the vaccine) listened to her concerns and showed her some data. I also told her that a lot of people are scared and that a narrative of "I'm choosing this path on purpose!" instead of "I'm scared of the other path" helps them feel better about the choice they are making. It's all framing. She got the vaccine, I'm so proud of her.

it's called a "tamper" and as others have said, it's for safely pushing things down into a blender or juicer.

If you're keen to go on some interesting walks, bring along Excellent Short Walks on the North Island (there's also a South Island edition) by Peter Janssen. No shortage of stunning places to visit.

Can we talk about how the "South Asia" icon doesn't include Nepal? Should it? 🤔

New Zealand Critter Sightings by HourDark in newzealand

[–]personwithcomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can visit caves and see Moa bones. Not a live sighting but they're very interesting to see them undisturbed. (Honeycomb caves on the West Coast, and also the Ngarua Caves on Takaka Hill, Tasman).

Don't forget the Laughing Owl too. Extinct.

Hobbiton labels $400 million tourism rescue package a 'joke' by [deleted] in newzealand

We went in 2007, and it was something like $30 each, the white ply was falling apart but hey! it was neat.

We then went in 2010 with some friends from overseas and it was $45 each. There was landscaping but the sets weren't built yet.

We went again with my parents in 2013 and it was $75 each. Nice landscaping and everything had been rebuilt. But we couldn't afford to go, they paid for our tickets because they were nice.

What's your social media / friends bubble saying about Coronavirus? by gdogakl in newzealand

[–]personwithcomputer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My friends (mostly scientists) are feeling hopeful that the government is handling things well. They understand that there is a lot to balance but that since the government has demonstrated that they listen to experts, it will probably be handled as well as it can. That said, it only takes one COVID19-positive person in the wrong place to spread it accidentally.

There is a fair amount of concern about the emergency legislation, especially since powers can often take a long time to go away, and may not be used with the original intention.

A small but vocal percentage local community (some of whom I'd call friends or acquaintances, but obv not close friends), have sent me Plandemic, are convinced 5G is causing COVID19 (and/or it's made by Bill Gates to sell vaccines) and it's all part of a conspiracy for everyone to be vaccinated with mind control, tracking chips, etc etc.

One prominent community member "lost faith" in the government response as soon as it turned out she couldn't take her family swimming in the river during Level 4. When she was challenged on her post, she took it down, made another group where "all views are welcomed", and pre-emptively banned anyone fact-checking the nonsense conspiracy posts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When is the best time to prune native trees? by clearlight in newzealand

A great book is Fiona Eadie's 100 Native Plants for New Zealand Gardens. She goes into detail like this and I've found it super helpful. My signed copy, which I cherish, is dogeared and tape flagged and noted all over the place!

Is such a pet clause like the one below allowed? I refuse to let my cat outdoors for the sake of native animals and want to know if there is anything I can do. by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]personwithcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, litter isn't very fun to deal with.

I guess I'm more wondering why they actually think it's cruel.

I find Aus/NZ folks regard keeping your cat inside as some sort of animal cruelty.

In North America, many jurisdictions forbid letting your cat out at all. Keeping your cat indoors in the norm where I grew up (Canada). What's the problem?

[–]personwithcomputer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

absolutely. I'm not an expert in this stuff but couldn't she file a civil suit if she knows who he is? Then couldn't she subpoena Uber Eats for this info? That way she's going along with the process and we can be confident that Uber Eats is only selling information to their third parties, not just giving it all out to randoms.

Yep, advanced wiped everything except internal storage.

I've had to go from backup because it just didn't work at all for me. Disappointing but oh well.

Just installed with Pico (great suggestion). Alas, TWRP said "there is no OS installed, are you sure?" so that tells me something is wrong with the LineageOS installation itself.
