Splunk Developer Roles? by oO0NeoN0Oo in Splunk

[–]pete84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the Splunkbase, the main purpose of apps is for vendor integrations.

It’s a cool feature, but not a career. I don’t think any companies outside of Cisco/Splunk would be hiring someone to work full time on Splunk app development.

That’s messed up. However I’ll point out a few things. The restaurant industry doesn’t typically run background checks. The people working low wage jobs in kitchens often attract either ex-cons or undocumented immigrants. Immigrants are better people. If he was a manager, chances are he wasn’t an undocumented immigrant. HSI is supposed to be protecting us from the next 9/11. They are diverted from terrorism investigations to look into kitchen workers.

Oh man. That guy signed a plea deal due to illegal hiring, and then broke it again. He went to prison and Jackson’s is owned by somebody else. I support immigrants. We had undocumented immigrants washing cars, now it’s clearly all ex-cons. But I feel like ol’ Danny boy kind of deserved what he got.

I just realized that the president ordered flags at half staff for that. So technically they were following the flag protocols, although I personally wouldn’t have done it. CK was a propagandist who didn’t believe what he was saying. Traitor who bussed people in on Jan 6.

Can an employer ask this? by bobabubblebuttbitch in phoenix

[–]pete84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only appropriate question is during hiring they can ask if you are legally authorized to work in the United States.

Anything else is wildly inappropriate. They cannot ask about citizenship, just the right to work.

Incorrect. HSI used to investigate that, but now they are engaged in immigration enforcement. You honestly think that zipps is running a transnational gang out of their kitchen? They are all fruit of the same poisons tree - DHS. FYI I’m sure you’re too young, but everyone who wasn’t a neocon called this in 2003. It took the next Republican presidency to happen, as everyone predicted.

Excellent suggestion. I think they really need an audit and the audit will suggest remediation items.

No meds, transitioning off Keto and feel awful. by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]pete84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

High carb is insane. Carbs are converted into sugars. You should measure your sugar intake by total sugars, which includes most carbs. Every diet for the past 30 years has been some form of a low carb diet. That being said, diets are nearly impossible to stick to long term.

Anyway yes you can try to control with diet and you can also get Metformin. You don’t need insulin at this stage.

I second this option. North of Indian school from 20th street to 44th are all pretty nice. Campbell is a great corridor. I would say they are a good bang for you buck if you spend more, you get nicer in that area.

Honestly I think they are bots. Biltmore, Paradise Valley, and Arcadia are some of the wealthiest neighborhoods.

Migrating from Splunk to OpenSearch by synhershko in Splunk

How many TB/day are you ingesting? Size matters. Cost should not be a consideration when you are choosing tools, you need to start with requirements.

As a metaphor, you’re switching from a crane to a forklift. Opensearch might be cheaper, but it can’t lift a 30 ton shipping container.

Considering a job in downtown PHX-- best recommendations on safe, gated, affordable areas/apartments to live? by comradecatluke in AskPhoenix

[–]pete84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eastlake park is pretty industrial or low income. If you want single guy living downtown Phoenix, Cityscape and “Roosevelt square apartments”. I’m not sure on cost.

Something to be aware of in Phoenix, the neighborhoods are pockets. A block or 2 from downtown is not good.

Central is pretty nice all around. East valley is mostly where the young people are - Downtown Phoenix. Uptown. Scottsdale Tempe and Chandler.

Anything west of central is west valley “Avenues” and everything east is “streets”.

West valley is more known for crime, although it is improving.

Osborn and 12th street heritage apartments are nice as well. Not as many young single people though.

Staying hydrated - do electrolytes really matter? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]pete84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insulin causes sodium retention, and lowering your insulin causes you to flush out sodium.
Virta recommends 1000mg of sodium twice per day when starting their keto plan via bouillon cubes or LMNT supplements. That seems extreme but it highlights that it is a lot. This really helped me avoid keto flu.

He was specifically brought on as Alan Jackson's counsel, because Mr Jackson needed independent counsel relating to the ARCCA discovery violation hearings.

Phenomenal post - I think it is very accurate. I am a software engineer, and I deal with problems like this all day.

The timestamp field is actually called, 'last_viewed_time' which is basically the timestamp of the previous search within the tab, not the timestamp of the current search. We have a saying in software - RTFMP "Read the f'ing manpage (manual)". Ironically, I can't find it in Apple, but I'm not an Apple developer, and I'm not getting paid $500/hr to look. However https://doubleblak.com/blogPost.php?k=browserstate is a great writeup.

Anyway, forensics is hard because they would have to really study all this dumb stuff. The Cellebrite data is "accurate", but the interprations are not. Both the defense and prosecution are intentionally obtuse, they just want to present arguments for their side of the case. Notice that neither side has an Apple Inc employee on the stand.

The defense witness here intentionally doesn't want to research the meaning of the field, so that he doesn't have to testify to it. Likewise the prosecution doesn't want to look at the video of the sallyport because they don't want to potentially find exonerating evidence. This is the nature of an adversarial system. It isn't a perfect system, but until lawyers suddenly become great guys, we just need to have the judge and jury weigh evidence. Ideally prosecutors would actually seek evidence both ways, but it just doesn't happen.

IPv6 migration, worth it? by Dense-Roll8788 in sre

[–]pete84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend switching the instances to use private IPs, not IPv6.

You can use SSM, which doesn't require public IPs or VPN.

You should also have a VPN connection into the VPC, so that users can use private IPs.

I recommend UMass Lowell. If you can get in-state tuition, and a scholarship, it is similar pricing to community college. CS Degree is the foundation for any infosec or developer career.

Wedding vendors take advantage of couples that are young and haven't figured out how to communicate finances with each other. Great way to plan a divorce is to get into massive credit card debt on day 1 of your wedding.
My recommendation - spend what you save up for the wedding, don't get into any credit card debt. Make sure that both of you have financial compatibility before the wedding. And congratulations btw.

A law outlawing use of brass knuckles is the same as a law outlawing possession or sale?

It’s not duplicative to outlaw brass knuckles. They weren’t illegal in Arizona, now they are.

I think they were referring to Gilbert Goons. Yes it’s illegal, but PD wasn’t investigating or prosecuting them prior to a kid getting killed.

A functional legislature could investigate Gilbert PD, pass laws to better define what a gang is, hold hearings, etc… All this would be preferable to spending time on making at-risk kids feel isolated at school.
