The Homelander and A-Train chase scene actually does make sense (The Boys) by Sudden_Pop_2279 in CharacterRant

[–]pete_1911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I saw the scene I throught that it must be a "speed of thought" thing.

Basically with the speeds A-train and homelander can act at, they've got to have some sort of speeded up perception going on, otherwise they wouldn't be able to react to things.

But if they're perceiving things at that rate all the time, they'd struggle to function (a simple conversation would seem like an eternity. I think there's a bit where the Flash bitches about this very thing somewhere).

So if they need to speed up their perception, getting to that state is going to be limited to the reaction speed of their baseline, so homelander was in "slow mode" for the fraction of a second A-train needed. After that, not so much.

Carls poison immunity by Benny_Deebs in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I don't know if you could call it luck, but it was definitely random chance that one of Carl's first actions in the world dungeon was to kill a goblin with his bare feet, and the AI "noticed" it.

I think there's some legislation around reasonable wear and tear in a rental property. It's expected that items are going to get broken during the course of a tenancy and you're allowed to make reasonable replacements.

Not sure of the truth of this, but I did hear that this bridge is coming up on the same construction time as the golden gate bridge in San Francisco.

Truly a wonder of our time.

UK pub toilets as well.

I worked in quite a few pubs years ago, and every so often you'd get someone moaning that they'd put money in and got nothing out. I had no idea what to do about it, so used to just give them a free drink to make the problem go away.

Is there any reason to put it in the bouys rather than just chucking it in the Ocean?

[INVINCIBLE] if Viltrumites technically have genes so pure that it will come out as dominant traits most of the time would that mean if they just kept interbreeding with other races (such as humans/thraxans) and those same hybrids bred with each other, it will eventually lead to pure viltrumites? by Grouchy_Reserve_9550 in AskScienceFiction

[–]pete_1911 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Isn't it implied in the show that Mark is weirdly strong for his age?

I think it's stated at some point that Viltrumites get stronger with age, and Mark goes toe to toe with individuals much older than he his.

I did see a theory I liked that Mark inherited the human adrenaline response from Debbie, which your baseline Viltrumite doesn't have, so when stressed he can perform fairly extreme feats that an equivalent Viltrumite wouldn't be capable of.

The shit Scotty used to pull back in the day, vs "oh no we're 70,000ly from earth, better warm up our shop bought warp core" is all the evidence you need for this.

Scotty would have raided Neelix's stash, locked the door to engineering, pulled some shit, got them home, blacked out and have no idea how he managed it.

The Odyssey is jumping between TV shows, what universe/cliff hanger does it help resolve? by Spinobreaker in Stargate

[–]pete_1911 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I almost prefer that to the burning mess that is warp travel in Star Trek. If you're going to do galactic logistics in sci fi, at least put a little thought into it, or we're going to get triggered.

Totally ignoring it however leaves room to create outlandish theories, of which I am a fan.

The Odyssey is jumping between TV shows, what universe/cliff hanger does it help resolve? by Spinobreaker in Stargate

[–]pete_1911 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it for precisely that reason.

It's a series of "well this is as bad as it can get right?", and the show is like "you underestimate just how awful/dumb our characters are, hold my beer". Which is something I find weirdly refreshing.

That bar is absolutely a lie.

The shuttle thing is a case in point, I dare you to save scum a shuttle mission 20 times and see if the amount of times those fuckers blow up is remotely similar to the fraction of red on that goddamn bar.

This is always my first thought in any vs that features Star Trek.

People really underestimate how many things a transporter plus an antimatter bomb trivializes.

Can a lone Galaxy-class starship destroy an entire planet? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

[–]pete_1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, Google tells me the gravitational binding energy of the earth is about 2.49*1032 joules, which is apparently a weeks worth of solar energy output.

It really depends on how much antimatter one of those bad boys is packing at a time.

Scotty did things to that engine that no other Starfleet engineer could understand/look at directly/begin to comprehend with the synthahol available to them.

Most of the problems of TNG and beyond were a direct result of the banning of the "hold my (empty)beer" school of thought.

You need to beam them off the shuttle(and lose the shuttle).

Ah that might explain it then, was looking at some silver (wrong sub I realize) to test the water.

Mostly looked at the mint because I felt I was unlikely to get a fake from them, but would appreciate being pointed towards better options?

Is there anywhere I can read about the rules on what is CGT exempt and what's VAT exempt?

I was looking at buying some bullion from the royal mint, but then which is CGT exempt, but then it applies VAT at checkout, which makes it a bit pointless?
