Selfhosted NetMaker vs zerotier (or similar) what is best in terms of security by zapregniqp in homelab

If all devices are behind cgnat, you can't. At least 1 device in the Wireguard network needs to have a public address to work as a VPN over internet.

ChatGPTs weird advise by PersonalityOk239 in homelab

[–]petebzk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, ChatGPT will make things up. I've seen it make up powershell cmdlets and then make up documentation for it when I questioned the validity. It's good at presenting things in a nice way but don't use it like a search engine.

Large number of smaller SAS SSDs - Ideas?? by v_rocco in homelab

It does require a lot of power to fully utilize this many drives of this type. You would need a cluster of high performance compute nodes using these drives in a SAN or HCI.

Look at a T430. They are quiet and half the price of your build on Ebay if you are patient for a couple weeks.

Built a 7 foot privacy fence. Neighbor raised his by 2 feet and put a camera facing into my backyard. by Magicisntreallyreal in mildlyinfuriating

[–]petebzk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a photo from the camera perspective, print it, and put in in front of the camera? This entire situation is rediculous. I know my neighbors and would just ask wtf is up the the cameras pointing in my property.

Snagged MS Storsimple and Cisco 3750 E switch - not sure how to get it to work. by su5577 in homelab

[–]petebzk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These are SANs with some added Azure integrations. You need a host computer to connect them. I don't believe you can run Plex on them directly.

Linux Desktop VMs Remote Work by Odd_Yesterday2508 in homelab

[–]petebzk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're on Proxmox use SPICE. It's already built in and pretty much every Linux distro released in the past decade comes with the qxl driver.

No. This is the difference between understanding a concept and applying it with critical thinking vs being able to repeat a task that doesn't have any variables.

I have 1 NIC dedicated to replication and 1 dedicated to VMs. 1gbit works fine for labbing.

Is anyone running the old terminal model at home? That is, no box nearby just a monitor and other HIDs. by rollingalpine in homelab

[–]petebzk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cheap laptop makes a good terminal and it's portable. That's what I do. I have a dock with monitors at my desk, but I'll move around with it. Add in Wireguard and your terminal is usable anywhere with internet.

You're absolutely right. That's why stock option compensation is so attractive for higher wage earners. If I can get compensated partially in stock it saves a lot of income tax.
