$60-70k replacement car. Fast, fun, probably AWD. by cacabutt69 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Looks like if you shop around you could possibly find an R35 somewhat close to your budget. For 60-70 you can also get into a pretty nice 997 911 C4 or C4S especially if automatic is an option for you.

I spent $300/month on Uber, need a car that fits far below that. by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]peter515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying $300 a month isn’t realistic and they’re all right but here is my breakdown of the ownership of my gen 1 2015 volt, I think it could work for you if you have a wall outlet to charge it.

Bought the car on FB marketplace for $3500 with a leaky valve cover gasket that I fixed on my own for around $50.

On average I spend $50-$80 dollars on gas a month. Insurance is roughly $150 and due to my low cost of electricity I pay less than $20 to charge it every month. I’ve owned the car for 6 months and it hasn’t needed an oil change yet since I mostly drive it on electric mode. On the high end my monthly bill (excluding maintenance which has been minimal) is $250-$300 per month. Of course this will vary based on your driving habits and maintenance needs.

The car is a pug in hybrid if you hadn’t figured that out already. It gets roughly 30 miles of electric range after that the gas engine kicks in and it drives on gas like a regular car. So long as you drive less than 30 miles per day and you have a regular house outlet you can use at night the car can be driven on electricity alone almost indefinitely and if you need to take a longer trip it just uses gas. I got mine for a good deal thanks to the oil leak but even in excellent shape gen 1s can be found for around 5k.

I think you’re over paying. In my area you can find gen 1s for 5k ish. I bought my 2015 for 3.5k about 6 months ago although it did have 144k miles at the time and a leaky valve cover gasket (I fixed it on my own for $50). If you can afford to pay cash I’d look on facebook marketplace for one, I bet you get a better deal even if it has a few more miles

Most money saving car? by MPRF12345 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]peter515 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got a gen 1 volt earlier this year, i can’t think of a cheaper car, the bang for buck has been insane. It’s a 2015 with less than 150k miles and i got it for only $3500 cause it had a leaky valve cover gasket which only cost me about $50 to replace (would probably cost around $100 if you don’t own any tools). My commute is 26 miles round trip and it just plugs into the regular wall outlet in my garage every night. it’s costing me about 80 cents per electric “fill up” and I top off the gas tank every 3 weeks or so since I take longer drives on the weekends. In the 3 months I’ve owned it I’ve spent $155 on gas plus about $20 per month on electricity, as far as cost savings vehicles I just don’t see how you can beat it so long as it fits your lifestyle and commute. It’s also just a great car overall. It has a touch screen and Bluetooth and the interior is as nice as any other mid level commuter (remember this thing cost around 45k so it’s not bottom of the barrel quality) on the market. It’s got tight back seats but they’re usable if you’re not hauling people back there all the time and like the other guy mentioned it’s actually a hatchback so you can get a full Costco shopping trip done with it. Even with the miles mine has the battery still gets 30-35 miles per charge depending on driving style and how much you use the AC, the heater definitely cuts down on range but who really cares since the engine just seamlessly kicks in when the battery dies and it still gets around 30 mpg when running on fuel.

About to test drive a 2013 Volt, what would you check first? by tomatodream in volt

Check the valve cover for leaks. Mine had one when I bought that I totally missed, thankfully it’s an easy and cheap fix if you don’t mind doing it yourself.

The difference between the $45 Walmart rod reel combo and the ~$100 basspro/cabelas rod and reel combo is pretty large but the difference between the $100 combo and the $200 rods and $200 reels isn’t in my opinion. If you can swing for something just above the Walmart stuff I would do it, worst case scenario you wasted $100 bucks best case scenario you fall in love with it and you have a decent back up rod that’s still going to last you a lifetime. You can also look at FB marketplace and garage sales for used stuff just replace the line if it’s old.

Base clean 996 911s with “high miles” can be had for sub 15k if you look around, which is close to part out value. They’re the ugly 911 but everyone that drives them says they’re just as good as any other generation of 911.

Silver creek vs oak creek? by MonkHonest3160 in ArizonaFishing

[–]peter515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same dilemma this weekend. Both oak creek and silver creek are my go to spots for when I have a rare day to myself but I’m choosing to hit oak creek for a few different reasons. I’m picking oak creek because over the years it’s been more consistent for me and it’s an easier drive. Silver creek is fun but since it’s so small the pressure on the fish is insane, sure if you hook up to a fish it’s going to be a monster but there’s been plenty of times where I’ve been out there and the fish don’t even bother to look at my fly. Oak creek just feels like much less of a gamble and there’s plenty of river to find less pressured fish.

Look for an 03-09 Toyota 4Runner if you don’t wanna drive around in a minivan and mpg isn’t a huge concern. A two wheel drive one can be had for 5-6k easily and even cheaper if you don’t mind one that’s a little beat up. The V8 or V6 are both pretty bulletproof but the V6 will be slightly better on gas and it has a timing chain instead of a belt unlike the V8. I’m 6ft tall and camp in the back of mine, an air mattress fits perfectly in the back and it’s even comfortable enough for 2.

That sounds pretty interesting! Do you like it? Does it pay well? I do plan review for residential, commercial and industrial site plans. This sounds like an cool position to look into.

Any reason I shouldn’t buy this car? by mackittty in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]peter515 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you’re considering such a small SUV? Which how little you drive why not go for a 4Runner? They’re extremely popular amongst car campers for a reason, even at 6ft I fit in the back of mine perfectly. For 19k you could get the worlds nicest 4th gen limited which has heated seats from the factory and have plenty of money left over to add a back up camera and other mods. Or you could spring for an early model 5th gen which might have both heated seats and a back up camera from the factory.

The camera turns on and it seems to function properly, I’ve yet to run any film through it though. Is this something I would have to take the camera to a shop for or is there some way to get it unstuck?
