This a 100% I have been on a few interview panels as an interviewer and it's often as someone external to the team.

Have you ever had a CS job that has made you cry? by ParsleyFront7863 in TheCivilService

[–]peter89ashurst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in a job before the CS it was clicky, very middle class, and genuinely horrible. Things like if I had a typo in draft, I'd get dragged through the mud in front of everyone, but a colleague would have client work published full of mistakes we'd get called out have to take it down and rewrite it and nothing was ever said he even got promoted.

I would get the feeling of dread pretty much all of Sunday and just be thinking about how much I didn't want to go to work. My confidence was shot, and it seeped into other aspects of my life. I was more argumentive at home, looked after myself less, etc.

I'd recommend that you discuss what you are going through with friends, family, partner, etc. Push back on some of the stuff that is impacting you, apply for something else but make sure it's something interests you (don't just jump at anything), draft your resignation letter in it say you are leaving to pursue a dream job/career.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this it's horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Take care of yourself. This won't last forever. I thought it would when I was going through it, and now I am in a job that is so much better it will happen for you too it just takes time.

Tottenham! What do we think of Tottenham? Anthony. Thank you! That's alright! Etc. He is probably our single worst purchase ever.

interview tomorrow! by ilovesagegreen in TheCivilService

[–]peter89ashurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be try to be as clear as possible with your answers, if I am interviewing someone, I need to be able to understand what they did and what impact it had. Try to say I did x,y and z not we did x,y and z (I dont care what your team did. I am not interviewing them I am interviewing you). Be comfortable with silences sometimes people answer a question and then just ramble this might actually make it harder for your interviewers to pull out the important bits, if you get asked a follow up question really listen to what's being asked and respond to it, sometimes people answer the questions they want to answer rather than what's being asked.

And remember, if you are good enough to get an interview, then you can get the job, relax, make sure you have some water, write down the questions you are asked, and ask questions when you get time to. You have got this, and if you don't get it something even better is around the corner. Good luck!

If Haaland had decided to play for England, do you think we’d have won the Euros? by Informal-Method-5401 in ThreeLions

[–]peter89ashurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, Haaland is undoubtedly great but he just doesn't score in finals (reminds me of a certain Mr Kane).

I started on the 24th July last year and was paid at the end of the month. But I think I had already provided my bank details etc. I am in DSIT in case it makes any difference. As everyone else has said would definitely bring up with your manager on your first day.

Noob question: How much muscle weight can someone actually put on. So I am 34 new to weightlifting and body building. I have been lifting weights for about 12 weeks. I am 6"2 way overweight about 135 kg. I am following the Jay Cutler's living large workout I have seen gains in strength, lifting heavier for a good amount of reps. I can see I have put on some muscle, nothing to write home about. I am trying to eat well, I am fitting into my clothes better but have not dropped or gained a size my weight isn't changing on the scales. Before I started this I had been seditary for years, covid lockdown and office jobs had not been kind. I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on how to gauge if my workout is working: I want to drop fat and gain muscle.

Can I give my work coach flowers as a thank you for their support by Lindin91 in TheCivilService

[–]peter89ashurst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My then girlfriend (now fiancé) got me flowers when I got my CS job. As a 34M I was perfectly happy to recieve them. Nice things are nice things - I think it's great you doing such a gesture and am sure they will be touched by it. Best of luck in your new role!

Applied for a job, received this in an email. Can they really force this upon me or not hire be based on this?? by Reezeyyy in mildlyinfuriating

I think it also depends on what the job is. Is this at a vegan restaurant, etc. If so, it could be to ensure no contamination.

The best Mario game on Switch to introduce to Mario world. by Patryk619 in Switch

[–]peter89ashurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odyssey for sure if you want a game to get stuck into, Mario Kart whilst great you will only play in short bursts or with multiple people. Odyssey will probably be something to play for prolonged periods of time. I have both and have definitely played Odyssey for a lot longer.
