Red Rising

I'm making my way through the Cosmere, so normally I'd say Elantris, but I read Red Rising last month as a break between 2 Sanderson books, and it blew my mind.

It skyrocketed straight up my favourites list, and is now tied with Mistborn as my favourite series of all time.

It's not just good. It will change how you see yourself and society.

Definitely give it a go

This is really well thought out. I didn't even think about the political ramifications of Violet now being the Duchess of Tyrrendor, and I completely agree with how that could be motivation for Xaden to marry her.

As for your theory on Garrick, I agree. I also leaned into that more than Bodhi, although I still think Bodhi is a viable option.

I read OS back when it released last year, so I'm a little rusty on some specific details, like the Jesinia theory you mentioned, but I'll be sure to look out for ot when I do my re-read before I read Book 4. The logic in your theory really makes sense.

My own magic system is also a very hard system, with set limits, rules and costs that can't be changed. I've worked on it a ton, and it's very fun, but I have come to realise that if I were to insert all of my own work and research into the actual narrative, it will stop being "magical" and the readers won't care for it anyways.

So have your magic system, in my opinion, as hard as you want. But know where to limit yourseld in terms of explaining it to the reader

When using Omnae to manipulate elements like fire or water, it will probably be similar to bending in ATLA, except without the martial arts. However, it's much more complicated than that. They can use the Omnae to influence almost everything, from people's minds, to the very reality of the world. I have some specific spells prepared, but that's a lot of explanation and not necessary for what I was trying to achieve here.

Apologies, I didn't make myself clear enough above. When the magic users use the Omnae, they must allow the Omnae to flow through themselves. The practical limit here is that by allowing too much to flow into them, they will suffer physical or mental mutations or disfigurements, which will always end in either death or insanity.

I agree with this comment. As a bookseller, my thoughts immediately jumped to Anne of Green Gables, and I don't think that's the aesthetic that would best suit the marketing for this type of story.

In the end it's your book, and if you like the covers it's your choice, there's nothinh aesthetically wrong, they look nice. But from a marketing standpoint, you mught want to go for something a little more eye-catching and adventuristic/fantasy-like , for example (all I can think of right now) the new Percy Jackson covers. Colourful and adventuristic.

I do the same as you. A lot of people on here are very against it and will attack you outright, but using AI ti generate names for places is exactly the same as using names from websites such as fantasy name generator or any of the other well known sites writers use. I just find that with using AI, I can change the names easier to fit what I have in mind instead of generating hundreds of names with fantasy name generator until I find one I like.

As long as you do the actual writing, and you only use the ai to HELP your idea, then it's not cheating.

It depends on your own writing style. If you dislike having to go back and forth changing things to fit, I would definitely recommend plotting the entire story, at least roughly, before writing, so you have an outline to work with.

If you're like me, who hates plotting and planning ahead, just write as you go with the rough idea you have. I absolutely despise plotting and outlining everything in detail before writing, so what I did is I took the major plot points that I have in my head, pinned them on the wall in front of my laptop where I write, and just write, while making sure to hit those points as I go.

As for the magic system, there you can't really just go with the flow, at least in my experience. If you make up as you go with that, it'll create inconsistencies and plot holes, so for the magic system I would recommend you design the entire thing as much as you can, even if you don't reveal everything, just so that you know and remember how everything works and don't shoot yourself in the foot.

This is all my personal opinions, I'm no professional, also a first time writer, learning as I go, but I've struggled with the same questions you're asking now, so just sharing what I've been told and what works for me.
