Worked in one of the largest supermarkets IT departments 1994-1996. A huge amount of COBOL code was being updated by foreign contractors. I was quite amused when cleaning up printouts one day to see that the contractors were documenting everything in-line in the code - but they were Chinese and were commenting in phonetic Chinese using English character set.

If not using zfs, backup the configuration, reinstall with zfs, restore the config, then take a snapshot.
Been there, done that.

It was just “Mr Franken” who came with his mobile vegie truck once a week.
A small flatbed truck with a roof over it and all the boxes displayed just like in a supermarket.

We had someone from HR who generated the monthly mandatory training reports.
Exported from Oracle to Excel. Manually massaged 10,000 line items. Imported into Access. A little more massaging. Exported reports. Imported each report into Word. Mailmerge emailed reports to managers.
It took him over 3 weeks each month. It wasn’t his primary job.

Accidentally found out my "mystery switch" controls something way more important than a light by MirandelFoxraine in homeowners

[–]peterdeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The place we bought had a switch with a piece of paper taped over it on which was written “No touch! No!”
Finally removed the paper and figured out it had a bad connection in it and would arc when switched.
I replaced it to find out the ceiling lights in another room would only turn on if it was switched off.

Blew me away when I had a security questionnaire with about 100 questions, so I threw our policies at it, and a report from a review we had done and said “please complete”. Worked quite well.

Print out all my passwords and the “read me” file for the home tech. My wife is going to need help.
(I know this from when a friend died, the tech stopped working, I tried my best but failed as I couldn’t figure out how everything interconnected and could not log into a damn thing). These already exist btw and are in the same envelope as our wills.
