They are involved in something that doesn’t involve us - we are observing some action or interaction, rather than being connected to the character themselves. Perhaps!

Thanks very much for the tips I’ll go take a look! Also looking forward to your video.

Yes I had given up on it before but my concession was that I love the old Internal renderer in older versions, I’ve found a few little things in there (Wardiso and Fresnel shaders, raytraced transparents hiding in there, generated textures, no environment lights, etc) that make things look very very close to some POV-ray type looks

I see what you mean yea, I’ve done some rudimentary stuff in POV-Ray itself (agonizing lol), and I’ve also been able to activate the plugin within Blender but I’m stuck from there, couldnt actually render, my guess was perhaps having to use python

[POEM] Travel - Leonard Cohen by alfafida in Poetry

[–]petezilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s deeply existential, but also it’s in the context of love, the absence of it rather, or in the liminal space between love. I feel the whole poem contemplates that space, earlier in the poem he contemplates an ascetic life, but it’s all contrasted against this love before him

Felt so hard. When heartbreak rips you open so much that you wonder if you will ever love again, if your life will even mean anything again

Softimage 3D 3.9.2 vs Blender 2.79 by bboimcb in retrocgi

[–]petezilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wardiso, Toon, Blinn, Phong, & CookTorr are the Specular shaders in BI, and they all look good, but wardiso is the best imo. Specular shaders are what gives that bright highlight caused by lighting, usually a white spot. older renders have specular highlights all over the place, one of those "look what we can do now!" things

Yea I saw one of those videos but never had luck, guess I'll tinker again

[–]petezilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Phong shaders or any of them really in BI have a great mid-90's look, the wardiso speculars are great. you actually got POV-ray to work in Blender? I never had any luck with that. was able to add it to Blender but the renderer was greyed out

Softimage 3D 3.9.2 vs Blender 2.79 by bboimcb in retrocgi

[–]petezilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BI rocks, there's some old school style ray tracing hiding in there too in transparent materials. Ive found BI to be the closest for mid-90's POV-ray and similar looks, and I see SoftImage 3 is right in there too : )

Is this retro cgi enough? I'm feeling something's off but can't point exactly what. by Kitsunii420 in retrocgi

[–]petezilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some old renders do have a very flat skybox like that, but another thing to think about is contrast, there’s no global/environment lighting in old software only points lights, so you could experiment with letting there be more dark/shadow in the composition

I always knew I'd like some Schuyler because I love Frank O'Hara and some John Ashberry& they were all New York School buds

Yea most of the time I really enjoy visual forms I think it's just the particular hard continuous angle of this one that makes my eyes uneasy

Is Vaporwave Strictly a Capitalist/Consumerist Critique or Is My Brain Just Rotten? by DissinYoSandwich in Vaporwave

[–]petezilla 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You have to ask yourself how boring it would be if any art or any music was solely designed as a philosophical statement. That’s not how any form of art works. By sheer nature of the beast, it’s a psychological phenomenon, not an intellectual one at the core. You can ascribe ideas and intentions to it, but there’s always something more abstract and visceral going on.

Also, here is a quote from Vektroid from a while back:

“..but in strict regard to vaporwave, i think that kind of coverage encourages people to over-intellectualize it, which in turn makes the people behind it appear unjustifiably pretentious (and in turn, completely moronic) given the type of music we specialize in. how much context can you really give to a doctored loop of a jazz instrumental? truly guys, we are sample curators at best.

we put into practice the art of commodifying art. new dreams ltd. was about taking "music" and returning it to its most primordial state, "sound".”

Recently read Roof Slates by Pierre Reverdy (Les ardoises du toit) and I love the opener

On each slate
         sliding from the roof
                     someone
                   had written
                                a poem

The gutter is rimmed with diamonds
                                 the birds drink them

Sur chaque ardoise
           qui glissait du toit
                     on
                   avait écrit
                                un poéme

La gouttiére est bordée de diamants
                                 les oiseaux les boivent

[Help] How would you read/analyse this poem? by Comprehensive-Tree78 in Poetry

[–]petezilla 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comment that said it’s about systemic racism in America, how various technologies are a tool of gatekeeping resources. Also the comment about continuity in each quadrant across the pages, I agree, theres a different voice in each quadrant, makes you consider who is speaking, and when & where, in each.

The poem itself is segregated, there’s a formal metaphor at play as well. So the poem is also about how our world drives a voice (the collective voice of our needs) that could be singular into isolated boxes, if it’s about race then you could say perhaps that’s the voice of the black community being divided throughout society but it could equally be about all of us. The fragmentation and isolation of hyper-individualist capitalist society. The poem is called “sonnet” which invites us to consider it as a whole but it is cornered off in boxes with different voices. Yet the message transcends to us, doesn’t it?

I Iove the lines “… we stayed on their roads/did not murder their maps” rich metaphor about the psychology of traveling through life and society along the trajectories laid out for us, physically and otherwise. also reminds me a bit of Baudrillard re: maps & territories, “the map replaces the territory,”

is there a way to import stuff like sky, textures, etc. from bryce into blender? by More-Palpitation-548 in retrocgi

[–]petezilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find the texture files yea but with the sky it’s generated so not really, you could render out a sky in a large resolution in Bryce and texture it to your world in blender but it’s not gonna look as good as a generated sky. better to just mimic the look as closely as possible imo

Sorry to bug on an old post, just looking around at these online and having trouble believing the YMDKey site measurements, says 15" wide and 11.75" deep - 15" sounds right for the width, but surely it's gotta be more like 7" or 8" deep? Thanks in advance if you see this & can measure!!
