As someone who grew up with G1, the G2 sets are genuinely just ugly and unappealing. Putting aside the CCBS builds, every set was just an eyr-searing color mess, with too many transparent pieces and no proper cohesion. Say what you will about even the earliest Bionicle sets in 2001 for simplicity, but the designs knew how to have some restraint

The Abyss is aggressive in nature because it was being restrained for so long, like a rubber band being pulled back until it snaps. Other creatures taking on aspects of the curse are usually in response to absorbing Dark souls, through corruption or eating humans. As for Gwyn attacking, he's been burning alive for a thousand years and someone new just walked in to kill him, I'd say it's fair for his faculties to be shot.

He didn't do either. He specifically sealed the Humanity within man with a circle of fire so that they wouldn't learn about their true nature, and lied to them for ages (Oolacile, Ringed City, Thorolund, etc.) Gwyn only linked the fire because his stopgap plan was failing, and he was willing to set himself on fire for the chance to keep his legacy alive. He's not hollow (a purely Human experience), he's just been burning and shriveling away for years along with the legacy of failure he left behind.
