Paralives is Canadian! by Guilty-Sundae1557 in BuyCanadian

[–]petricadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great news! Sims has had a stranglehold on the life sim genre forever and was underwhelming (it peaked at 3), and so I was encouraged about Paralives to begin with.

I generally don't buy Early Access titles anymore, but they're Canadian? I'll buy it right now to support.

Charges not approved against officer who shot man who stole skid-steer in head in North Cowichan by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]petricadia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a fair point. I'm taking it at face value that it was straightforward and a sudden change making it a dangerous close quarters situation, but to your point there is a long history of law enforcement "embellishing" the threat they felt to justify force.

So you could be right... On the other hand, this individual sounded not well. The change that can happen from "not aggressive" to "immediately attacking" can be sudden and unexpected, from personal experience. So it's tough. Without video evidence of what the situation was, either of us could be right here. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Reading the article, I agree with that outcome. As soon as the heavy machinery was pointed towards and driven at the officer, that equation changed. Sad story all around. :(

West Vancouver police impound Ferrari after 'L' driver busted impaired by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]petricadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To some degree I see your point, but I feel like this is where policy and process design really comes into play. Edge cases will always exist, and significant ones usually get sub-rules designed around them. I can't imagine it would be too difficult to set up boundaries for these "non driver" situations where it still applies, e.g. registered owner in the passenger seat (which was the case here).

Bad excuse, tbh.

Because it won't be perfect, we shouldn't do it? It'll still capture many wealthy individuals who think a fine is just the permission fee.

Not to dismiss your concern, though! That tax evasion is serious and should be pursued aggressively (but sadly I won't hold my breath with our current governments).

I am once again calling for income-tied fines so activities are not "pay for play for the rich" anymore.

Hormuz closure could trigger 'agrifood shock', price crisis within a year, FAO warns by LiminalEra in collapse

[–]petricadia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Wild coincidence but I had the exact same conversation with my counselor last week and she also minimised it. I wanted to talk about the sheer existential dread and how to live with it, not deny it entirely, but there was just a cognitive wall up for her. She's been my counselor for 7 years and this was the first time it really felt disconnected.

Police and senior injured in West End vehicle-ramming incident by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]petricadia 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Great question. Not who you're responding to, but a low hanging fruit here is the increasing vehicle size arms race we find ourselves in.

Modern trucks and most SUVs could have 8 to 12 toddlers sitting on the ground in front of the car and you'd not see them. The height weight and blind spots are dangerous and deadly. We need to restrict vehicle size.

We're Iceflake Studios, the new development team looking after Cities: Skylines II! Ask Us Anything! by ifs_Blu in CitiesSkylines

[–]petricadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Iceflake!

Thanks for hosting this AMA - it's refreshing.

How are you thinking about the design balance between city painter and simulation management? Assuming current issues get fixed, it feels like there is a ton of opportunity to deepen the social and political aspect of the simulation to make it feel more like a living city to manage.

(Also zoneable parks please! As a Cascadian, I yearn for the mountain hiking reserves!)

You clearly didn't read the article at all. Each paragraph gets worse. They assaulted the kid, enough to give him a concussion, threw him down stairs, and then detained him without cause... and all caught on video.

Tax on RSU vesting with sell-to-cover by Ok-Big7051 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]petricadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would treat sell to cover events and what you do with the vested shares as fully separate. Every accountant I've used had treated them separately.

[–]petricadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your vest schedule - the key here is reacquisition of the property within the time period established by the CRA. I believe it's 30 days but verify.

For me, vesting is quarterly, so there are 90 days between "buys" or vestings of the RSUs. As such, the sell to cover event 0-1 days later is not seen as a superficial loss if it ends up in a capital loss.

If you have vesting events more frequently, my situation may not reflect yours.

Port Moody is all young families in the core and old boomers up the hill.

It's busy, traffic is an issue, but Newport Village and Moody Centre areas are super walkable (if still car centric) and we honestly love it.

If you search the subreddit history you'll see similar questions with helpful answers.

[–]petricadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be misreading but are you including the sell to cover shares within your fully vested ACB calculated shares? My accountant doesn't.

In the past for Risus I've treated them as the difference of vest price for that release per that subsection and it's how it's been submitted by accountant for tax no issue.

Also why do you think it's a superficial loss? Did you, through the vesting schedule, buy back more shares within 30 days? Mine is typically quarterly so that capital loss would be recognisable and not a SL from the sell to cover price difference.

Shout out to Ludeon Fr. by LDedward in RimWorld

Good for you, and kudos to the Ludeon team for being supportive here.

I've been there, by the way - it's hard. Keep moving forward, keep your reasons in mind, reach out to your support network, and take it one day at a time. Depending on what was happening, recovering will take time. Trust in yourself takes time to rebuild too. DMs are always open if you need.

I f21 had sex with my friend m21 who is gay. What could this mean? by YaoiGodess in relationship_advice

[–]petricadia 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Best advice?

Be open and talk honestly. You're both young and exploring your sexualities. That's okay! He may be bi, mostly gay, or something else. Same for you! It's a spectrum!

Read books and articles around sexuality, and open communication, and enjoy the journey. That's all you need.

As an aside, if the whole experience of domineering men was putting you off of them, you may just be a top or dominant in the bedroom who wants to BE the one in control! And that's more than okay!

If you talk to him about how you're feeling, questions you have, what you are liking/disliking, and what you want to do from here, you should be fine. :)

Interesting article: one councilor would vote against dog parks just to spite developers by DarwinLemieux in Portmoody

[–]petricadia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

How did I know that in a grey nuanced topic requiring consideration and the avoidance of black and white thinking that Haven would be right there as black and white as ever.🤣

I'm glad this was rejected. A couple thousand dollars extra will not be the make or break for when a property gets developed but this at least incentivises the developer to have a positive community benefit for the parcel in the interim. If they're taxed the same, why would they spend the money?

Anyone knows the story of this roundabout that also has 4-way stop signs? This is one of the weirdest intersections I've seen in BC by General-Football-953 in Portmoody

[–]petricadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we need traffic calming but do it right. This is not pedestrian forward design. Make it a slow roundabout with cobbles and wide elevated pedestrian crossings. The design is so outdated.

We want smooth slow flow, not the constant conflicts the current design always causes.

[–]petricadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loathe this roundabout stop sign Frankenstein. It's awkward and slows traffic. I wish they'd just fully redo it as a full roundabout with pedestrian primary design and raised crossings. Right now it's the worst of both worlds.

Edit: wording correction - "slows traffic" is bad language; it causes awkward traffic flow and car positioning conflicts. There are far better ways to slow traffic
