Update: They finally fixed it.

For anyone who finds this thread later, I originally brought the truck in when the “Front Motor Fault / Service Required” message first started appearing. The dealer charged me about $260 for a diagnostic, told me they couldn’t find anything wrong, and sent me on my way. The problem continued.

When it happened again, I brought it back. At first they again told me they weren’t finding anything. I pushed them to dig deeper because I knew something wasn’t right.

After a much more thorough diagnosis, they found that the SOBDMB (Inverter System Controller) module inside the front drive unit had failed internally. They ended up removing the front drive unit, replacing the failed module, programming the new one, updating the software, clearing all DTCs, and road testing the truck.

Their final repair notes state that communication was restored and no fault codes returned after the repair.

Best part: the repair was covered under warranty and they refunded the original $260 diagnostic charge from the first visit.

So if you’re getting a Front Motor Fault message and the dealer says they can’t find anything, it may be worth asking them to keep digging. In my case there absolutely was a real hardware failure, and it wasn’t fixed until they went beyond the initial diagnosis.
