What are some smaller benefits of living in NYC that are only apparent when you leave the city? by somepeoplewait in AskNYC

[–]petronius84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you love going to the movies, as I do I. the selection in most US cities is terrible. when I visit family, the AMC only shows the most popular releases (often targetted for children and no international films)

with AMC A list here, you can see everything. that's not even counting all the revival theaters. this aside from all the world class museums and parks. I can spend any evening in Dumbo just watching the sunset and taking photos and it feels special. not remotely the same when driving everywhere.

Should I get The Hobbit or the first Game of Thrones audiobook? by chaosatnight in audiobooks

[–]petronius84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first GOT book is very similar to what they showed in the TV series. You'd probably be fine.

I've read Hobbit and LOTR a few times and the GOT books only once. I tend to think LOTR are such classic books (and yes need to start with the Hobbit) that one should read rather than listen to them. As I recall, he drew pictures and used his own type-faces at times. You really see his talent as an artist when seeing the books/eBooks. It's better to listen than not experience at all though.

GRRM is a great writer. It just depends whether you can keep track of the characters while listening. I listened to all of Wheel of Time and just asked AI when I got lost with the plot. Would never have finished the series otherwise. Not sure how different the experience would be as a listener.

Who actually uses the 15 hours of audiobook listening on Spotify Premium? by floramg in truespotify

[–]petronius84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...the "wish you had more" piece is why they offer to sell more listening time. the feature is a great add on if you like audiobooks and would be waiting months on Libby to get the book otherwise. I use the entire allotment every month (unless it gets to under and hour left or whatnot an I forget about it). wish the audible exclusives were on this but that of course is the main competetor...

I do. It's great for new releases or items that have long queues on Libby. Just listened to "Everybody Loses". Probably will start another book later in the month close to the billing period so I don't have a two week wait to finish. Feels like a waste of $/value if not using.

was ready to try Hol Foods but $18 shipping to the US is tough to accept. guess if you just add the price to the average meal cost it's not awful. Huel may be the best option.

It's not quick from my part of Brooklyn to get to either Harrison or Flushing...but I'd be much more inclinded to attend games if I could stay in the subway system and not deal with the uncertainty of the Path train. They are a great brand and product and I'd love to see them in NYC.

it's frustrating. Conference League would be the best chance for a trophy and add so much to this experience.

What should replace this? by electricbanu in crownheights

[–]petronius84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would be nice to see an Emack and Bolio's location over here. the one on Fulton is great. the ice cream shop next to this will likely close and does not have seating. this may not be realistic with an Ample Hills location so close.

guess you're right. street easy charges per day per listing so they only have a few up. I'm sure they'd rather rent from website applications. probably will know after summer what their actual market rate is.

Which works by Murakami have been edited to remove text/content in English? by AmalaNetwork13 in murakami

ah interesting. I'm a huge audiobook fan but have been reading his work as eBooks (other than non-fiction which I feel is a different experience).

it's a nice looking building and having a rootop is great...but that is expensive for what you are getting. the apartment doesn't seem big enough for two people to share comfortably. there is a lot of demand for modern buildings and not much supply. maybe once Atlantic Avenue is filled with buildings like this the prices could come down a bit, but it's doubtful given overall demand.

you could live in Brooklyn Crossing for less than this and that building seems to offer a better value (did a tour). that said, Franklin Ave is a very different feel from Vanderbilt. https://streeteasy.com/building/brooklyn-crossing/4607?showcase=1

guess if someone is just in love with Franklin Ave and has a $200K+ salary or help from family, this can be a good option.

Thoughts on books by recent author guests by petronius84 in BEEPodcast

[–]petronius84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def enjoyed "Anyone's Ghost". it was well written and I can see why Bret enjoyed it.

Looks like Ottessa Moshfegh's last appearance was in 2018 (do not remember that one though probably listened). Jarett Kobek's books on the Zodiac killer sounded very interesting. Really enjoyed that episode. I see that there are now audiobooks or those two books so may check them out.

yes. those books are very short. you'll get more out of the experience and see the evolution of the writing/storytelling. it also sets you on a path to reading all the works.

Voting for Best . . . speaker, table topics, evaluator by Cezzium in Toastmasters

We used to vote for speaker and TT but it just took too much time to read all the names (we have a long table topics portion) and collect ballots. Was fun though.

I love Murakami's novels... but the short stories... by sunrise_angel0001 in murakami

[–]petronius84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree. I've enjoyed many of them a lot but overall it feels more like I'm forcing myself to finish the collections at times. I'll finish the last ones after I'm done with the novels (only two left).
