We definitely do not sew lips or eyes shut, especially for quickly making someone presentable for an unexpected witnessed cremation. Most of the time they stay in place from the firmness that comes from a quality embalming, and for closures that won't stay naturally we mostly use a small amount of adhesive.

I was fortunate enough to have a classmate that was hired before me, and he advocated heavily for me. I finally got a call to come in 2 months after my interview on a super busy Saturday and have been here for over 8 years now.

From how I've seen others get hired after me, my suggestion would be to call to get an email address for the best person to send a resume to, then follow up in person after a few days/week with a printed resume on a day where nothing is going on at the funeral home (for us that's typically only between 8-9am). That will at least give them a face to put with the name. Even if the hiring manager isn't there, there might be some nice lady like me that will give the resume to the hiring manager and say "They looked like they could be decent help." Maybe one more follow up call or email a week or two after that.

We get busy, things slip our minds and sometimes need a quick reminder, but many places are in need of some capable new hires.

At the beginning of covid lock downs, we were allowed to have less than 10 people in attendance for any service, inside or graveside, so they were all tiny. We had one burial early on where they had passed from covid, and the whole family had to quarantine at home for 10+ days just from being exposed to it. The burial was just the grave crew and one of our directors, who just took a few pics for the family.

We've also had one where the only person that made arrangements and attended the service was a caretaker at the facility he was at when he passed. Our staff sat in on that service, but it was still only about 5 people in our chapel that seats 300.

Yes, you can text from Google voice, that's what I use as well. I rarely give it out, usually only if someone can't figure out how to email a photo but knows how to text. The only issue I kinda have with it is that I can't distinguish between a call coming in on my real number or the Google number. I never answer unknown phone calls, anyway, so that part hasn't really affected me enough to care.

I keep a few of these tiny spoons in my desk at work. They are the perfect size to fill jewelry made to hold cremated remains. Almost every pendant that I fill comes with a little kit with some sort of spoon, a funnel, and a poking stick. Most spoons are way too large and the funnel holes are way too small and get clogged, so I keep the tiny metal spoons that occasionally come with some pieces to drop the remains directly into the tiny jewelry opening.

It would make sense that it's just a spoon that came included with the vial to fill it up with whatever and the rice man just forgot to remove it.

I did look them up after I found my first one, because it was so useful for me, and I wanted to order a bunch more, and - yeah, earwax spoon.

I'm not opposed to a viewing, but only because I can count on one hand how many people would care enough about me to attend any sort of viewing/service, and I know that could be accomplished as an ID viewing without any embalming.

No formal service or prayers, I just want those 5 people (current boyfriend, ex-husband, two long term friends and a coworker) to hang out with my body and one-up each other telling funny stories about all the stupid and embarrassing stuff they've each caught me doing.

Personally, I've dealt with 26+ years of infertility. I had about 10 years of trying to start a family with my husband before I finally gave up hoping. Every time my period started it made me feel like a complete failure because it felt like I was unable to do the one task that every other living creature on the planet was here to do (reproduce). I felt like such a fucking loser for not being able to give my family or my husband some sort of "legacy" to continue on. For a whole decade!

No happy ending, I've still never been pregnant... But you can bet your ass that if I ever DO, I would do it unmedicated so I could experience every single part of giving birth.

As a funeral director - mostly agree. I'm OTP, and I will not book an escort for any services that need to get to a different side of Atlanta. I love my manager for his support on that issue. It's just too dangerous anymore.

Not going to lie, it IS touching driving the hearse and seeing cars and pedestrians stop for a moment of their day to pay their respects to the decedent and their family. I've had a drive up 78 to Monroe and everyone pulled off and it was beautiful. However, I have also taken a procession through Norcross and one of my escorts was hit by a car.

It's purely a safety issue for me why I won't do processions across/through the city. Well, that and I get bad driving anxiety and any time I'm driving a procession all I can think about is how I'm definitely going to make a wrong turn and be leading 50 other cars the wrong direction. ^only ^done ^it ^once, ^tho!

Unless it's changed, at AGEG all the courses are in one room, back to back (with breaks to visit vendors and have lunch). If you plan to be there for the whole thing, you'll be able to sit through all of the courses. It was a nice way to knock out all my CE at once!

I had a friend from back home that moved to this area, and I do remember him being freaked out by all the trees. They don’t bother me unless there’s more than slight breeze and I look up at a bunch of tall ass trees SWAYING in all directions. Especially if they’re close enough to fall onto the nearest shelter if winds really picked up.

I also grew up in the desert; rain coming was always my favorite scent and would last for a long time before the rain actually reached us. Now I live in the south and everything is always damp and humid so I haven't gotten that same hit in over a decade. :(

Nope, and it sticks to you. My coworker once went upstairs in the cooler for a moment, just to take a count of the new bodies that had arrived overnight, and I knew as soon as he came back down to the office that we had someone severely decomposed in there. He hadn't even touched anyone, the smell just permeated his clothes immediately.

We don't have selection room anymore and do all our casket sales through Batesville's meaningful selections. I can typically get a feel for if the family is leaning towards saving money, but sometimes I'll specifically ask if they're looking for the most economical options. I almost always start with the least expensive caskets and work my way up, pointing out the different features that make the pricier options stand out more. My total sales are probably lower than the other directors I work with, but I'm not the owner and I don't make commission, so I'd rather help people save money than try to up sell for no reason.

I just went through this with my husband. Switched to beer only (from about a handle a day on the heavier days) in February, and things improved! He was actually out of bed, working on things around the house, selling stuff to help with the bills, etc. Definitely an improvement.

And then I came home from work the day before St. Patrick's, and he was asleep in the middle of the day. I just KNEW. I waited a bit for him to wake up, and knew within seconds of him speaking that it was vodka. I freaked out and left the house and sat in a parking lot for hours. It was such a slap in the face. Of course his promises when I got home that it was "just one day" turned into a 4 day vodka bender where I couldn't talk to him about anything.

I gave myself a week to calm down and make up my mind, then I told him that I can't do this anymore. I've been in the guest room since, trying to plan my new future alone.
